Chapter 13 - The summer strategy

The sun was just beginning its descent, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink. The resort's beach buzzed with laughter and splashes as Vijay, Dev, Ayaan, Kabir, Tanu, Riya, and Sana made their way along the shoreline.

Vijay was tossing a frisbee to Dev, while Riya followed, her steps careful but agile, catching the frisbee with a soft laugh. The sound made Vijay's chest tighten, and he realized he hadn't smiled this much in a long while.

"Watch out!" Kabir shouted, running past with exaggerated stealth. "I am the ultimate saboteur of fun. Prepare for chaos!"

Dev rolled his eyes. "Saboteur or attention-seeker?"

Kabir grinned. "Both! Multi-talented!"

As they all laughed, Vijay noticed Riya hesitate before throwing the frisbee back to him. Her eyes met his for a moment longer than usual. A soft blush warmed her cheeks.

Later, as they all rested under the shade of a palm tree, Kabir nudged Sana with a grin.

"Flashback time," he said dramatically, pointing at her.

Sana tilted her head, curious.

Flashback — one nights ago, resort balcony, lantern light flickering.

Kabir had leaned close to Sana, whispering conspiratorially.

"So… you noticed how Vijay and Riya are dancing around each other, right?" he asked, eyes twinkling.

Sana nodded slowly, suppressing a laugh.

"Well, we need reinforcements. Dev, Ayaan, and I are officially starting Operation Matchmaker. You in?"

Sana paused, then smiled softly. "I thought I'd be too late… but yes, I'll help. Someone needs to nudge them into noticing each other."

Kabir threw a mock-salute. "Welcome aboard, Agent Sana. We start immediately. Step one: subtle teasing. Step two: create accidental "moments." Step three: embarrassment if all else fails."

Sana giggled. "You are ridiculous."

Kabir winked. "And effective."

Flashback ends.

Back in the present, Sana nudged Kabir. "You really told me all that?"

"Of course! Mission critical intel. And I need a smart partner. You're brilliant, remember?" Kabir replied smugly.

The group decided to head toward the small cliffside trail for a view of the sunset. Dev immediately began joking about who could climb fastest, flexing his arms unnecessarily. Kabir, of course, refused to participate seriously.

Vijay and Riya walked side by side. The space between them was casual but filled with electricity neither wanted to admit.

"So…" Riya said softly, "you've been teaching Dev all your gym secrets?"

Vijay laughed quietly. "Mostly he teaches me patience. And how to survive ridiculous pranks."

Riya's eyes sparkled. "I can see why he's fun to hang out with."

Kabir suddenly sprinted ahead, pretending to stumble. "Emergency! Need help from all available muscles!"

Dev groaned. "Kabir, stop being dramatic."

Kabir turned back with a grin. "Dramatic is my middle name!"

Vijay smirked at Riya. "You see? Some people are just… built for chaos."

Riya smiled faintly, her hand brushing accidentally against Vijay's. A subtle jolt ran through both of them.

As the sunset deepened, the friends sat on the cliff's edge, legs dangling. Dev flexed unnecessarily again, while Kabir teased him mercilessly.

"Tch, look at these guns," Kabir said, pointing at Dev's arms. "Are they for saving the world or scaring small children?"

Dev grinned. "Both, obviously."

Vijay, quiet for once, watched Riya. The sunlight hit her face just right, the breeze tousling her hair. "You really… fit in everywhere, don't you?" he said softly.

Riya glanced at him, slightly surprised by his tone. "I try," she admitted, "but some things… I keep to myself."

Vijay nodded slightly, respecting her boundaries. He smiled faintly. "I like that about you."

Riya felt her heart skip. She looked away, pretending to adjust her shoes.

Meanwhile, Tanu and Sana were chatting quietly, observing the group's playful banter.

Tanu whispered, "Riya… she's something else. Vijay is lucky… though he doesn't know it yet."

Sana laughed softly. "That's why we're here—to make sure he realizes it."

The night ended with a small campfire the resort provided. Kabir, of course, insisted on roasting marshmallows while exaggerating every minor burn like a theatrical performance.

Dev flexed near the fire, while Vijay sat quietly beside Riya. Each small touch, accidental or not, seemed to linger longer than usual.

"Promise me something," Riya said quietly, as they watched the sparks fly into the night sky.

"What?" Vijay asked, curious.

"Promise we won't rush anything. Just… enjoy this."

Vijay smiled softly, squeezing her hand lightly. "I promise."

Kabir, overhearing from a few feet away, muttered dramatically, "Step one of Operation Matchmaker: subtle nudges. Step two: flirtation sparks. Step three: chaos if ignored. This is going well…"

Dev laughed loudly. "Kabir, you're insane."

Kabir winked. "Insane is my specialty. And trust me—by the end of this trip, these two will be driving each other crazy… in the best way possible."

The night air was warm, the group's laughter mingling with the gentle crash of waves. Somewhere in the background, stars began to appear, tiny sparks of light over the dark sea.

Vijay looked at Riya, smiling faintly. For the first time, he felt the calm certainty that summer wasn't just about fun. It was about connections—friendships, laughter, and maybe… something deeper with her.

Riya looked back, soft eyes meeting his. A small smile curved her lips.

The friends around them—Kabir, Dev, Ayaan, Tanu, and Sana—watched silently. Mission Matchmaker was quietly unfolding

Narrator :

"Some moments in life were quiet. Some moments sparkled. And sometimes, the people you least expect became the architects of your happiness. Under the golden sunset, friendships deepened, laughter lingered, and hearts quietly started to intertwine… without either of the two noticing just yet."
