Chapter 5 - Episode 5: “Rumors Don’t Need Truth”

In elite places like St. Mary's College…

truth is optional.

But rumors are permanent.

🌧️ The Whisper Becomes Fire

It started small.

A few students laughing near the cafeteria.

Then it spread.

Fast.

Dangerously fast.

"Did you hear? Anaya Verma helped that scholarship boy."

"Why would she even go near him?"

"Something is going on between them…"

By the afternoon, Arjun Mehta was no longer just "the scholarship student."

He had a new identity.

A dangerous one.

"The boy Anaya is interested in."

And Arjun didn't even know it.

🖤 Arjun's Isolation Deepens

In class, people stopped insulting him directly.

Instead, they stopped including him.

Group projects? Ignored.

Seating? Empty space beside him.

Even eye contact? Avoided.

Because now…

he wasn't just poor.

He was rumored.

One boy leaned over and whispered:

"Bro, don't sit near him… Anaya might notice."

Laughter followed.

Arjun stayed silent.

But something inside him tightened.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

Humiliation that had no proof.

🌸 Anaya's Side – Pressure Begins

In the student council room, Anaya was surrounded by files and reports.

But her mind wasn't there.

A senior student entered.

"Anaya… the rumors are spreading."

She didn't look up.

"What rumors?"

He hesitated.

"About you… and the scholarship student."

Silence.

For a second… even the air stopped.

Anaya finally looked up.

Her eyes were cold.

"Say it clearly."

The student swallowed.

"They're saying you are… involved with him."

The pen in her hand stopped moving.

Just for a second.

Then she placed it down slowly.

"Ridiculous."

But her voice was sharper than usual.

Too sharp.

🌧️ The Public Humiliation Attempt

The next day, the college auditorium was filled.

Mandatory student assembly.

Arjun sat in the back.

Unnoticed. As always.

Or so he thought.

The principal began speaking about discipline and reputation.

Then suddenly—

Anaya Verma was called on stage.

She walked up calmly.

Perfect posture.

Perfect image.

But Arjun felt something strange.

She looked… tired.

Then the principal said something unexpected:

"We must ensure students maintain proper boundaries across social classes."

A pause.

Then he continued:

"There are rumors regarding student conduct between Miss Anaya Verma and a scholarship student."

The entire hall reacted instantly.

Whispers exploded.

Heads turned.

Arjun froze.

He didn't move.

Didn't breathe properly.

Anaya stood still on stage.

For a second… her expression didn't change.

But her fingers tightened slightly.

The principal continued:

"We expect clarification."

Silence.

All eyes on her.

Waiting.

And then—

Anaya spoke.

"I don't entertain nonsense."

Cold.

Sharp.

Clear.

But then her eyes shifted slightly.

Not to the crowd.

Not to the principal.

They landed at the back.

On Arjun.

Just for a second.

And that second changed everything.

Because for the first time…

Arjun didn't feel invisible.

He felt exposed.

🖤 After the Assembly

Rumors didn't die.

They multiplied.

Now it was official in people's minds.

"She looked at him."

"She knows him."

"Something is definitely there."

Arjun walked out of the hall slowly.

People stepped aside like he was contaminated.

He didn't react.

But his silence… was heavier than before.

🌸 Rooftop – Anaya Alone

Anaya stood alone on the rooftop later.

Wind hitting her face.

Perfect control slipping slightly.

Her phone vibrated.

Messages from home.

From her father:

"Do not damage our reputation."

She closed her eyes.

And for the first time…

she whispered something she never said before.

"I didn't do anything."

But even she didn't sound convinced.

Because deep inside—

She remembered the umbrella.

The cafeteria.

The way she stood there… without thinking.

And worse…

She remembered Arjun's eyes in the auditorium.

Not accusing.

Not angry.

Just… hurt.

And that hurt stayed with her longer than she expected.

🌙 Arjun – Night

Arjun sat alone in his room.

The ceiling fan made slow sounds.

But his mind was louder.

He wasn't angry at her.

He wasn't even blaming her.

But one thought kept repeating:

"Why am I becoming a problem in her life… without even touching her world?"

And for the first time in his life…

Arjun Mehta felt something close to breaking.

Not his body.

Not his future.

But his belief that staying silent would protect him.
