Chapter 14 - The Woman Who Knows Him Best

She arrived without warning.

And yet—

Everything about her felt planned.

Victoria Hale didn't knock.

She didn't need to.

The moment she stepped into Blackwood Holdings, people noticed.

Heads turned.

Conversations stopped.

Not because she was loud—

But because she carried the kind of presence that didn't ask for attention.

It took it.

Emily saw her before anyone announced her.

Tall.

Elegant.

Every movement precise.

Controlled.

Confident.

And most importantly—

Familiar.

Not personally.

But in the way Alexander moved.

The way he held silence.

The way he looked at the world.

Cold.

Untouchable.

For a brief second—

Emily understood something instinctively.

*This woman knows him.*

Not the version the world saw.

Not the version built for business.

But the one underneath.

And that—

Was dangerous.

"Mrs. Blackwood."

Victoria's voice was smooth.

Perfectly measured.

Emily turned slowly.

Matching her calm.

"Miss Hale," she replied.

Neither of them smiled.

Not really.

Not sincerely.

Just enough to keep the illusion of politeness alive.

Victoria's gaze moved over Emily.

Not openly critical.

But observant.

Analytical.

As if she were evaluating something.

Emily didn't move.

Didn't react.

She let her look.

Because she had nothing to hide.

And more importantly—

Nothing to prove.

"Alexander is expecting me," Victoria said.

Emily tilted her head slightly.

"Is he?"

A pause.

Subtle.

But sharp.

Victoria didn't answer directly.

Instead, she stepped closer.

Not invading.

But close enough to lower her voice.

"He always does," she said softly.

There it was.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

But intentional.

Emily smiled.

This time—

Genuinely.

"Then you should go see him," she said.

Her tone light.

Effortless.

"As his assistant will tell you…"

A slight pause.

"…appointments are scheduled."

Victoria's eyes flickered.

Just once.

A reaction.

Small.

But real.

Emily saw it.

And filed it away.

Interesting.

Alexander's office.

The door closed behind Victoria with a quiet click.

He didn't stand.

Didn't greet her.

Didn't even look surprised.

"You shouldn't be here."

His voice was flat.

Controlled.

Familiar.

Victoria smiled faintly.

"I could say the same about your marriage."

Silence.

Then—

He looked up.

And just like that—

The temperature dropped.

"Choose your next sentence carefully," he said.

Victoria didn't flinch.

She never had.

"That wasn't meant as an insult," she replied calmly.

"It was… curiosity."

Alexander leaned back slightly.

Watching her.

Waiting.

"You've never needed anyone," she continued.

"You've never trusted anyone."

A pause.

Then—

"And now you're married."

His gaze sharpened.

"You're here to discuss business," he said.

"Not my personal life."

Victoria walked further into the room.

Slow.

Measured.

Like she had done it a thousand times before.

Maybe she had.

"That is business," she said.

"Everything about you is business."

Another pause.

Then—

"I bought Carter Group's debt."

There it was.

The real reason.

Alexander's expression didn't change.

But something behind his eyes did.

Darkened.

"Why."

Not a question.

A demand.

Victoria stopped in front of his desk.

"Because I knew it would get your attention."

Silence.

Then—

"It worked."

He stood.

Slowly.

The movement alone shifted the entire room.

Dominance.

Control.

Power.

"You're playing a dangerous game," he said.

Victoria smiled.

Soft.

Almost nostalgic.

"I learned from you."

For a second—

Something flickered between them.

History.

Unspoken.

Heavy.

Then—

The door opened.

Emily stepped in.

And everything changed.

The moment Emily entered—

The balance shifted.

Invisible.

But undeniable.

Victoria turned.

Her gaze sharpened slightly.

So this—

Was the woman.

Emily walked in without hesitation.

No rush.

No tension.

Just calm.

And stopped beside Alexander.

Not behind him.

Not in front.

Beside.

Equal.

That mattered.

"Am I interrupting?" she asked lightly.

Alexander didn't look at Victoria.

"Stay," he said.

The word was simple.

But final.

Emily did.

Victoria watched the exchange.

Carefully.

Closely.

Too closely.

"I see," she said softly.

"Things have changed."

Emily met her gaze.

"Have they?"

Victoria tilted her head.

"Alexander doesn't repeat mistakes."

Emily's smile didn't fade.

"Then it's a good thing I'm not one."

Silence.

Sharp.

Clean.

Alexander stepped forward slightly.

Not aggressively.

But enough.

Enough to make a statement.

Enough to shift the space.

"State your terms," he said to Victoria.

Business.

Cold.

Back in control.

Victoria looked between them.

Then back at him.

And for the first time—

There was something in her eyes.

Not jealousy.

Not yet.

But something close.

"You want Carter Group," she said.

"I want access."

"To your international expansion."

Alexander didn't respond.

Which meant—

He was considering it.

Emily noticed.

Of course she did.

Her chest tightened—

Just slightly.

Barely enough to notice.

But enough.

Victoria noticed too.

Of course she did.

Her smile deepened.

Subtle.

Sharp.

"Think about it," she said.

Then she turned to leave.

But as she passed Emily—

She paused.

Just long enough.

"Be careful," Victoria said quietly.

"Men like him don't fall in love."

A beat.

"They possess."

Emily didn't move.

Didn't react.

Didn't give her anything.

"Then it's a good thing," Emily replied just as quietly,

"That I'm not something that can be owned."

Victoria held her gaze.

Then smiled.

And left.

The door closed.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Different.

Emily didn't look at Alexander.

Not immediately.

She walked slowly to the window instead.

Looking out.

Thinking.

Processing.

Then—

"She knows you."

Not a question.

A statement.

Alexander didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Emily nodded slightly.

Still not turning.

"That's dangerous."

A pause.

Then—

"So am I."

That made him look at her.

Really look.

"Is that jealousy?" he asked.

Emily smiled faintly.

Still facing the window.

"No."

A beat.

"Just observation."

Silence.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Again.

Too close.

Again.

And this time—

He didn't stop.

"Look at me," he said.

Emily turned.

Slowly.

Their eyes met.

And whatever distance was left—

Disappeared.

"You think she matters?" he asked.

His voice low.

Controlled.

But sharper now.

Emily didn't answer immediately.

She held his gaze.

Measured him.

Then—

"No," she said.

"But I think she used to."

Something shifted in his expression.

Not anger.

Not denial.

Something deeper.

Then—

His hand lifted.

This time—

He didn't stop.

His fingers brushed her jaw.

Firm.

Intentional.

"You're wrong," he said quietly.

Emily's breath caught.

"For the first time in a long time…"

A pause.

Then—

"You're the only one I'm looking at."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Real.

Emily didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't break eye contact.

But her heartbeat—

Was no longer steady.

And somewhere deep down—

She knew.

This wasn't a game anymore.

Not for him.

Not for her.

Not for either of them.
