Chapter 21 - Episode 21: The Choice They Designed

The corridor felt longer than it was.

Not because of distance.

Because of pressure.

Like the walls were watching her think.

Meera walked without looking back.

Because looking back meant breaking.

And breaking meant they win.

The door ahead opened automatically.

No guards.

No resistance.

Only invitation.

A soft voice welcomed her:

"Welcome to Conditioning Unit."

Inside, the room was different.

Not harsh.

Not violent.

Worse.

Calm.

White seats.

Soft lighting.

No chains.

No shouting.

Just silence engineered to feel safe.

Meera stepped in.

Immediately, the door closed behind her.

Click.

A screen lit up.

"Final Phase Initiation"

Meera's jaw tightened.

"What final phase?"

The system responded gently:

"Emotional detachment optimization."

She laughed once.

Sharp.

"You keep saying that like it's normal."

No response.

Only progression.

A second screen activated.

And then—

Rani appeared.

Not physically.

But live feed.

Weak.

Sitting in another room.

Breathing uneven.

Eyes searching.

Meera's entire body froze.

"Rani…"

Rani's head lifted slightly.

She heard it.

Somehow.

A voice spoke:

"Subject A and Subject B show extreme emotional linkage."

A pause.

"This is inefficient."

Meera stepped forward.

"If you touch her—"

The system interrupted:

"We are not touching her."

A pause.

"We are correcting you."

Silence.

Then the screen changed again.

Two options appeared.

OPTION 1: Continue Attachment

Maintain emotional link

Subject A & B remain unstable

External separation will continue indefinitely

OPTION 2: Stabilize Outcome

Preserve both subjects

Remove emotional dependency permanently

Memory of attachment will be reduced

Meera stared at it.

Slowly realizing.

"This isn't rescue," she whispered.

"This is editing."

The system replied:

"Correction is preservation."

Meera shook her head.

"No."

A pause.

"You don't preserve people by deleting what made them real."

Silence.

Rani's voice suddenly crackled through speakers.

Weak.

But real.

"Meera… don't listen…"

Meera's breath stopped.

Rani continued:

"They want you to choose wrong… so you survive alone."

Meera closed her eyes.

Because that was the trap.

Not death.

Not pain.

Loneliness.

The system spoke again:

"Decision required."

Meera opened her eyes.

Slowly.

Steadily.

"I choose neither."

The system paused.

Unusual response detected.

Meera stepped closer to the screen.

"You think love is instability…"

A pause.

"But it's the only thing that kept me alive."

Rani's voice cracked softly:

"Meera… don't—"

Meera raised her voice:

"I won't erase her."

A pause.

"And I won't erase me."

The room lights flickered.

System response:

"Non-compliance detected."

Alarms didn't sound.

That was the terrifying part.

It was too quiet.

Instead, the system changed tone.

Calmer.

More dangerous.

"Then Subject A will be isolated."

A pause.

"Until compliance is reconsidered."

Meera's body went cold.

"No…"

Rani's feed flickered.

Distorted.

"Meera!" Rani's voice broke.

Then—

the screen went dark.

Silence.

Complete.

Meera stood frozen.

Not moving.

Not blinking.

Then she whispered:

"You made a mistake."

The system replied:

"Elaborate."

Meera's eyes lifted slowly.

Cold now.

Focused.

"You didn't break me."

A pause.

"You separated the only thing holding your system together."

Silence.

Somewhere deeper in the facility…

alarms began for the first time.

Not loud.

Controlled.

But real.

Because something had shifted.

Meera stepped back from the screen.

And for the first time inside the system…

she wasn't a subject.

She was a threat.
