Chapter 17 - Episode 17

The Glimmerfen was finally behind them, replaced by a secluded rocky plateau that overlooked a vast, mist-covered valley. They made camp under the shelter of a natural stone overhang.

"It feels different from yours," Lira said, staring at her palms. She tried to summon the blue light again, but only a faint, flickering spark appeared before vanishing with a sharp pop.

Alhen sat across from her, Quon resting his chin on Alhen's knee. "Tell me how it felt when we were on the lake."

Lira closed her eyes, trying to recapture the moment. "It wasn't a flow. It felt like... pulling threads. Like there was a giant invisible loom in the air, and I just had to grab the right string and tie it to my feet."

Alhen nodded, pulling out his old journal. "My father called Essence 'The Wave.' It's internal. It's my own life force pushed outward. But what you describe... that's Mana. My books say Mana is 'The Weaver.' You aren't using yourself; you're using the energy hidden in the atmosphere and shaping it into a command."

"A command?" Lira asked.

"A spell," Alhen corrected.

For the next three days, they didn't move toward the next town. They practiced.

Alhen showed Lira how to breathe—not to push energy out, but to pull it in. "Don't fight the air, Lira. Invite it."

Lira stood on one leg atop a jagged rock, sweating despite the mountain chill. She focused on the 'thread' of the wind. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, glowing that electric sapphire blue.

[Mana Bolt]

She thrust her hand forward. A jagged bolt of blue energy hissed through the air, striking a distant boulder. Instead of shattering it like Alhen's physical Essence would, the bolt left a glowing, geometric burn mark that hummed with static.

"It's precise," Lira whispered, breathless. "But it drains me so fast."

"That's why we train together," Alhen said, drawing his sword. The silver mist of his Essence swirled around the blade. "I'm the shield and the sword. I take the hits and create the openings. You're the strike from the distance. The 'Caster' who changes the rules of the fight."

To test this, they sparred. Alhen moved with his silver-enhanced speed, a physical blur. Lira didn't try to match his strength; she used her Mana to create small 'Haste' circles under her feet, blinking a few feet away every time Alhen got close.

Quon joined in, his snow-white fur sparkling. He seemed to be the bridge between them—whenever Lira grew too tired, Quon would bark, and a small pulse of pure white light would stabilize her flickering Mana.

"We're a team now," Alhen said, sheathing his sword as the sun began to set on the third day. "Not just a traveler and a guide. We're something the Wilren Kingdom hasn't seen in a long time."

Lira wiped the sweat from her forehead, a confident smirk returning to her face. "A Swordsman of Essence and a Mage of Mana. The 'Third Place' better be ready for us, Alhen."

Alhen looked at his silver guild plate, then at the glowing blue sparks in Lira's eyes. The journey was no longer just about seeing the world—it was about mastering it.
