Chapter 3 - Chapter 3:The black wolf /first shift

Dawn came slowly.

The gray sky brightened without warmth, light filtering through branches like diluted water. Devin woke instantly, his senses already active before his eyes fully opened. The forest smelled different in the morning, wet bark, moss, and faint traces of animals that had passed during the night.

He crawled out of the hollow log, stretching carefully.

His muscles felt… tighter.

Stronger.

The previous day's running and fighting had already pushed his body. He flexed his fingers. The nails seemed slightly sharper than before. Not by much but noticeable.

He remembered something important.

He hadn't tested it yet.

His transformation.

Not fully, he knew that would be dangerous. Too loud. Too visible. Too unstable for now. But partial transformation… that was different.

Controlled.

Quiet.

He walked deeper into the forest until he found a small clearing. No obvious signs of anomalies. No watchers, at least none he could detect.

He stood in the center.

Breathing slowly.

"Just a little," he whispered.

He closed his eyes.

And focused.

At first, nothing happened.

Then warmth spread from his chest outward.

Bones tingled.

Muscles tightened.

His breathing deepened instinctively.

He let the change come gradually.

His hands shifted first.

Fingers lengthened slightly. Nails extended into short, curved claws. Dark hair spread across the back of his hands and along his forearms. The skin toughened.

He opened his eyes.

Vision sharpened immediately. Colors dulled slightly, but motion became clearer. He could see tiny insects crawling on bark twenty meters away.

His heartbeat slowed.

Control.

Good.

He pushed further.

His spine cracked softly. Shoulders broadened. His posture lowered instinctively, weight shifting toward the balls of his feet. His teeth sharpened, he felt them pressing against his lower lip.

He stopped there.

Partial form.

Half human.

Half predator.

The difference was immediate.

Power hummed through him.

He crouched and pressed his hand into the ground. The soil compacted easily. He dug his fingers in and lifted a small rock, something that would've required effort before.

Now it felt light.

He stood and walked to a fallen tree trunk. Yesterday, he could barely move one end. Now he gripped it with both hands and lifted.

The log rose.

Not effortlessly but far easier than before.

He set it down gently, breathing steadily.

His senses roared with information.

He could hear:

A bird far away

Leaves shifting in wind

Water dripping somewhere underground

He inhaled.

Smells layered over each other, soil, decay, distant animals, even faint traces of the armed humans from yesterday.

His lips curled slightly.

"Yeah… this is better."

He tested speed next.

He crouched, then sprinted.

The world blurred.

He covered the clearing in seconds, leaping over a bush without thinking. He landed silently, claws digging into bark as he stopped himself against a tree.

No loss of balance.

No stumble.

Pure instinct.

His breathing remained controlled.

He felt… dominant.

Not arrogant but confident.

He climbed the tree next. Claws sank into wood, allowing him to scale upward quickly. He perched on a thick branch and looked down.

Height didn't bother him.

He dropped.

Landing lightly.

The transformation was stable.

Summary:

In this partial form, Devin is roughly 4× stronger than a grown man and far faster.

Still controlled and quiet, perfect for survival.

Back in the clearing, Devin flexed his claws.

This was useful.

But it also drained energy slowly. He could feel hunger creeping in. Maintaining the form required fuel.

He relaxed slightly.

The fur receded. Claws shortened. His body returned to normal though still stronger than before.

He exhaled.

"Good… I can use it when needed."

A branch snapped nearby.

He froze.

His senses sharpened instantly.

Something was approaching.

Slow.

Heavy.

Not human.

Not the thin creature from before.

This was… larger.

He dropped low, slipping back into partial form silently. Claws extended. Muscles coiled.

The bushes parted.

A massive boar stepped into the clearing.

But it wasn't normal.

Its skin was patchy, as if parts had been replaced. One eye glowed faintly. Metal protruded from its shoulder like embedded fragments. It snorted, scanning.

An anomaly.

Devin didn't move.

The boar sniffed the air.

It detected him.

It charged.

Devin sidestepped, slashing as it passed. His claws cut shallow lines across its flank. The creature squealed, turning aggressively.

Faster than expected.

It lunged again.

He jumped, higher this time, landing on its back. He drove his claws down, gripping. The boar thrashed wildly, smashing into a tree. Pain shot through Devin's shoulder, but he held on.

He bit.

His teeth pierced thick hide.

The creature stumbled.

He pushed off, flipping backward. It charged again, slower now. He met it head-on, something he couldn't have done before.

He grabbed its tusk and twisted.

The force redirected it into a tree. The trunk cracked. The boar collapsed, stunned.

He finished it quickly.

Silence returned.

He stood over it, breathing steadily.

Stronger.

Definitely stronger.

He looked at his claws, then at the forest.

"This place… is going to make me grow fast."

He didn't notice the small drone hovering high above the canopy, recording everything.

Miles away, someone whispered:

"…Subject exhibits transformation capability."

Another voice replied quietly:

"Prepare containment protocol update."

In the clearing, Devin wiped his claws on the grass.

And somewhere deeper in the woods…

Something else began moving toward him.

The forest no longer felt neutral.

It felt… hostile.

Devin sensed it as he moved through the undergrowth. Animals avoided him entirely now. Even insects seemed scarce. The deeper he went, the more the air felt charged—like a storm building, but silent.

He stayed in partial form longer than before. It felt natural now. His muscles didn't strain as much, and his senses continuously scanned for threats.

Then he smelled it.

Not one.

Multiple.

Humans.

But different from before.

More disciplined. Cleaner scent. Less hesitation.

He stopped instantly.

"Advanced team…" he murmured.

He crouched low and moved quietly toward higher ground. From the slope, he spotted them—five figures, wearing heavier tactical gear, helmets with visors, and carrying unfamiliar equipment.

Not just rifles.

Containment tools.

One carried a rectangular device emitting faint pulses. Another had a launcher most likely non-lethal but specialized. They spread out methodically, forming a search grid.

They weren't guessing.

They knew what they were hunting.

Miles away, inside a mobile command unit, a supervisor spoke calmly.

"Target displays enhanced physiology and transformation. Use Protocol Gray-Child. No lethal force unless necessary."

An operator nodded.

"Containment cage ready. Tranquilizers calibrated for high metabolism."

Back in the woods, Devin exhaled slowly.

Running might not work this time.

These weren't standard agents. They anticipated anomalies.

He backed away carefully.

A faint click sounded.

He froze.

A small device blinked on a tree nearby.

Sensor.

He had triggered it.

"Contact," one agent whispered.

They moved instantly.

Devin sprinted.

Branches whipped past. He zigzagged, but a net launcher fired ahead of him. He leapt—barely clearing it. Another agent flanked from the right, firing darts. One grazed his arm.

Burn.

Sedative.

His vision blurred slightly.

He snarled, slipping deeper into partial form to compensate. He pushed harder, but they anticipated his path. A shock baton struck his side mid-run.

Electricity surged.

He crashed to the ground.

His muscles spasmed.

Before he could recover, two agents pinned him with reinforced grips. Another snapped metallic cuffs around his wrists, insulated, glowing faintly.

Containment restraints.

His strength struggled against them but the sedative slowed him.

"Subject secured," one agent said.

They lifted him carefully.

He fought, but his limbs felt heavy. His breathing quickened, not from panic, but anger. Something inside him stirred, responding to restraint.

They carried him to a clearing where a compact cage sat, foldable, reinforced alloy bars with energy emitters at each corner.

They placed him inside.

The door slammed shut.

Lock engaged.

Devin's breathing deepened.

The cage hummed softly. His muscles weakened slightly under the field. He gripped the bars, but his partial strength wasn't enough.

"Transport in two minutes," an agent reported.

Another crouched nearby, observing.

"He's smaller than expected."

"Still dangerous."

Devin's vision flickered.

The sedative dug deeper.

But something else pushed back.

His bloodline.

Restraint.

Containment.

Control.

His instincts rejected it violently.

His heart slammed once.

Hard.

Then again.

Faster.

Warmth exploded through his chest.

Bones ached.

Muscles twitched violently.

The agents noticed immediately.

"Vitals spiking."

"Sedative failing."

Devin growled.

Low.

Unstable.

His spine arched. The cuffs strained as his wrists thickened. His breathing turned into rough snarls. Dark fur spread rapidly across his arms.

"Transformation!" one agent shouted.

They stepped back.

The cage vibrated.

His shoulders broadened, pressing against bars. His face elongated slightly, teeth sharpening. The transformation wasn't gradual, it surged, forced by stress.

The cuffs snapped.

Metal cracked.

The agents raised containment weapons.

"Hold him!"

Too late.

His body expanded fully.

Bones cracked loudly. His height doubled. Muscles bulged far beyond his earlier partial form. Pitch-black fur covered him entirely. His eyes glowed, feral, furious.

This wasn't standard.

This was stronger than the typical werewolves from Van Helsing.

Stress amplified him.

He roared.

The sound blasted outward, rattling leaves and making agents stumble.

He slammed his claws into the cage.

The bars bent.

Energy field flickered.

Another strike,

Metal tore open.

He lunged out.

One agent fired a shock round. It hit but barely slowed him. He swatted the weapon aside, sending it flying. Another launched a reinforced net; he ripped it apart mid-air.

They retreated, switching to fallback positions.

"Containment failure!"

He moved faster than before massive but agile. He slammed into the ground, shockwave scattering dirt. His claws carved deep trenches.

But he didn't attack them directly.

Instinct prioritized escape.

He bounded into the trees, clearing massive distance in seconds. Branches snapped as he passed. Bullets of tranquilizer struck but failed to penetrate thickened hide.

He didn't stop until he reached dense forest.

Then he slowed.

His breathing thundered.

The transformation faded slowly. His body shrank back, fur receding. He collapsed to his knees, exhausted but alive.

His first full transformation.

Stronger.

Much stronger.

Summary:

Under stress, Devin's full werewolf form is significantly stronger than average Van Helsing werewolves.

First evolution triggered by attempted containment.

Back at the clearing, the agents regrouped.

"Subject escaped."

The team leader exhaled.

"…He evolved during capture."

Over comms, command responded quietly:

"Understood. Upgrade classification. Do not attempt solo containment again."

They stared at the torn cage.

"Requesting heavy containment unit."

Deep in the forest, Devin lay against a tree, breathing slowly.

His body trembled not from fear, but from growth.

His bloodline had awakened further.

And the forest… felt even more dangerous now.
