Chapter 15 - Chapter 15 – The First Betrayal

Night had fallen, and the mansion was quiet—too quiet.

Amara moved through the halls, clutching the surveillance monitor Alexander had given her. Every shadow seemed to twitch with movement, every whisper of air like a warning.

She had barely slept since discovering the secret room. Claire's words haunted her: "Every woman who has loved Alexander Knight ends up ruined."

Amara rounded the corner near the kitchen when she noticed something strange. One of the staff members—the young man who had been acting suspicious since the gala—was lingering near the pantry, glancing nervously toward her.

Her pulse quickened. She remembered the messages warning her: "Check the staff. Not all are loyal."

Carefully, Amara raised the monitor, watching the security feed. Her heart skipped. The young man was carrying a small black device—another camera.

Before she could react, a voice behind her said softly:

"Looking for something?"

Amara spun around. Mr. Lawson, the elderly mansion manager, stood there, his expression calm but eyes sharp.

"Mr. Lawson…" Amara said cautiously. "I… I think he's spying on me."

Lawson's lips pressed into a thin line. "I know."

Amara froze. "You… you knew? Why didn't you tell me?"

Lawson's eyes darkened. "Because this is Alexander's world, Miss Amara. You have to learn to see for yourself… and survive for yourself."

He stepped closer and whispered, "Trust no one. Not even those who seem loyal. The first betrayal comes from the closest people, not strangers."

Amara's chest tightened. She realized the truth—the young man wasn't acting alone. Someone inside the mansion was actively working against her, and Alexander had kept it secret to teach her how to defend herself.

The young man noticed she had seen him and bolted down the hallway. Amara chased after him, clutching a heavy candlestick, adrenaline surging.

"You can't hide!" she shouted.

He skidded around a corner—but she was faster. She cornered him near the servants' stairwell.

"Why are you doing this?" she demanded.

His face twisted in fear. "I… I'm following orders! I don't want to hurt anyone!"

"Who?" Amara pressed.

The young man swallowed hard. "Claire… she's… she's planning to ruin you. She… she told me to plant the cameras and… and watch everything!"

Amara felt a shiver. Claire's reach was deeper than she imagined.

The young man's hands shook. "Please… don't tell Alexander. She'll—"

Amara's mind raced. She had a choice: expose him immediately, risking her safety, or use this knowledge to gain an advantage.

Before she could decide, a soft, commanding voice echoed behind her.

"Amara."

Alexander appeared at the top of the staircase, his eyes dark and sharp. The young man froze instantly.

Alexander's gaze swept over the scene, then landed on Amara. "You handled this well. But remember… a small victory doesn't mean the war is over."

Amara nodded, realizing the chilling truth: the first betrayal was only the beginning. Every step in the mansion would be a test, and failure could cost her everything.
