Chapter 3 - The Dragon’s Riddle

The crystalline plain stretched endlessly, shimmering under the violet sky. Kael trudged forward, dragging the Trialblade along the ground. His shoulders slumped, exhaustion etched into every step. Lyra walked beside him, her staff glowing faintly, her expression calm as ever.

Kael broke the silence. "So, what's next? Another monster? Maybe a giant spider? Please tell me it's not spiders."

Lyra's lips curved faintly. "The next trial is older. More cunning. The Trial of the Dragon."

Kael groaned. "Of course. Because nothing says 'fun adventure' like being roasted alive."

They reached a canyon carved into the crystalline plain. The walls glowed faintly, runes etched deep into the stone. At the canyon's heart lay a massive gate, its surface engraved with scales and wings. As they approached, the gate trembled, and a roar thundered across the realm.

The ground shook. From the shadows emerged a colossal dragon, its body shimmering with golden scales. Its eyes burned like twin suns, and its wings stretched wide, blotting out the sky.

Kael froze. "Okay… that's not a lizard. That's a flying apocalypse."

Lyra bowed her head slightly. "Guardian of the Riddle. It does not test strength, but wit."

Kael blinked. "Wait. Wit? You mean… riddles?"

The dragon's voice rumbled like an earthquake. "Answer true, and the path opens. Fail… and you burn."

Kael muttered, "Great. I'm about to play trivia night with a flamethrower."

The dragon lowered its massive head, eyes glowing. "First riddle: I am always hungry, I must always be fed. The finger I touch, will soon turn red. What am I?"

Kael scratched his head. "Uh… sounds like my ex."

Lyra shot him a glare. "Focus."

Kael thought hard. "Always hungry… must be fed… turns things red… Fire?"

The dragon's eyes narrowed. Then it rumbled, "Correct."

Kael exhaled. "Ha! Nailed it. Who's the genius now?"

Lyra rolled her eyes. "Don't get cocky. There will be more."

The dragon's voice thundered again. "Second riddle: I speak without a mouth, hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?"

Kael frowned. "Okay, that's creepy. No mouth, no ears, no body… but alive with wind…" He glanced at Lyra. "Any hints?"

Lyra's eyes glowed faintly. "It is simple. Think of echoes."

Kael snapped his fingers. "Echo! It's an echo."

The dragon's eyes flared. "Correct."

Kael grinned. "I'm on fire. Figuratively. Hopefully not literally."

The dragon leaned closer, its breath hot enough to make Kael sweat. "Final riddle: I am not alive, but I grow. I do not breathe, but I need air. I have no mouth, but water kills me. What am I?"

Kael's mind raced. "Not alive but grows… needs air… water kills… Oh no. It's fire again, isn't it?"

Lyra shook her head. "Think carefully. It is indeed fire."

Kael hesitated, then shouted, "Fire!"

The dragon's roar shook the canyon. For a moment, Kael thought he had failed. But then the dragon's eyes softened. "Correct. You have passed the Trial of the Dragon."

The gate behind them opened, revealing a path of light. The dragon lifted its wings, rising into the sky. "You have wit, mortal. But wit alone will not save you. Greater trials await."

Kael collapsed onto the ground, wiping sweat from his forehead. "I swear, if the next trial is Sudoku, I'm quitting."

Lyra extended her hand, helping him up. "You did well."

Kael smirked. "See? Brains over brawn. I'm basically unstoppable."

Lyra's lips curved faintly. "Until the next trial humbles you."

Kael groaned. "Why do I feel like you're rooting for that?"
