Chapter 1 - the light after the storm

In a small town surrounded by quiet lanes and simple houses, there lived a middle-class family filled with warmth and love. The father, Dinesh, was a hardworking man who believed in honesty and perseverance. His wife, Purna, was gentle yet strong, holding the family together with her kindness and patience. They had two sons—Ruby, the elder one, responsible and calm, and Sanjay, the younger one, cheerful and full of dreams.

Their life was simple but happy. Every morning, Dinesh would leave for work on his old motorcycle, waving goodbye to his family with a smile. Purna would prepare meals, take care of the house, and guide her sons in their studies. Ruby helped his mother with chores and looked after Sanjay, who was often lost in his playful world of imagination.

Evenings were the most beautiful time for them. They would sit together, share stories, laugh, and sometimes dream about a better future. Dinesh always said, "No matter how hard life gets, we must stay together. That is our true strength."

But life does not always follow the path we wish for.

One rainy evening, everything changed.

Dinesh was returning home from work. The roads were slippery, and the rain poured heavily, blurring everything in sight. Suddenly, a speeding truck lost control and crashed into him. The accident was severe. People gathered, but it was too late. Dinesh was gone.

The news reached home like a storm.

Purna stood frozen, unable to believe what she had just heard. Ruby felt his chest tighten, as if the world had stopped. Sanjay didn't understand at first, but when he saw his mother crying uncontrollably, he realized something terrible had happened.

Their world shattered in a moment.

Days passed in silence and sorrow. The house that once echoed with laughter became quiet and heavy. Purna struggled to accept the reality, but she knew she had to stay strong—for her sons.

Ruby changed the most.

At a young age, he felt the weight of responsibility fall upon his shoulders. He stopped being just a boy. He started helping his mother in every possible way, managing expenses, running errands, and even taking small part-time work after school.

Sanjay, too, began to change. Though he was younger, he could feel the pain around him. He missed his father deeply—the stories, the laughter, the warmth. But he also saw his mother's silent tears and his brother's tired eyes.

One night, Sanjay asked softly, "Will Baba ever come back?"

Purna held him close and said, "No, my child… but he will always live in our hearts."
