Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Digital Lead

They reached the bushes near the primate exhibit, the area now dark and silent under the moonlight. Lucas pushed through the thorns, his hands searching the ground and the low-hanging branches for the familiar strap of the camera. After a few tense moments, his fingers closed around the cold metal and plastic of the device, which was still tangled in the brush. He pulled it out carefully, his heart pounding with the hope that the electronics had survived the fall and the night air.

The camera was a professional-grade model, built to withstand the rigors of nature and travel. Lucas wiped the dust from the lens and pressed the power button, letting out a breath of relief as the LCD screen glowed to life in the darkness. He began to scroll through the most recent photos, moving past images of lions and colorful birds. The three men huddled around the small screen, their faces illuminated by the pale blue light as they reached the end of the roll.

The final few photos were a chaotic sequence of blurred images, captured as the boy was being grabbed and pulled into the shadows. Most were shots of the ground or the sky, but the very last photo was a clear, high-resolution image of the kidnapper's face. The boy had managed to pivot the camera toward his attacker in the final second before he lost consciousness. It was a perfect shot, capturing the man's eyes and features with unmistakable clarity.

"Finally," Ziven growled, his hand tightening on his weapon as he stared at the face of their enemy. "We have a lead." They now had a visual identity for the man who had been terrorizing their families and murdering their grandchildren. The rival was no longer a faceless shadow; he was a man of flesh and bone who could be tracked and hunted. The three legends felt a surge of renewed energy, knowing that the hunter was now the prey.

They left the zoo with the camera, realizing that they needed to move quickly before the man could disappear again. The face in the photo was that of a professional, someone who looked like he belonged in the high-stakes world of international espionage or private security. Martin suggested they use their old contacts to run a facial recognition search through the deep-web databases that the 2070 police didn't have access to. They were ready to take the next step in their journey to reclaim their families.

As they walked back to their hidden transport, Lucas looked at the camera one last time, feeling a deep pride for his grandchild's skill. Even in the face of terror, the boy had performed his duty as an expert in taking photos, providing the gods with the weapon they needed. The three men knew that the reunion was not just about the past, but about the future they were fighting to save. They drove into the night, their eyes set on the path that would lead them to the truth.
