First step in the restaurant ,and Joan was mesmerized by the classic vibe .chandelier with warm light , high ceilings adorned with delicate plaster cornices , and walls covered with wood paneling or classic patterned wallpaper. It was nothing like the d, polished restaurants she was used to in her own time. Joan chose a table in the corner , and a waiter soon greeted her and gave her the menu. After taking a look she ordered a Grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and bread .
After ten minutes of waiting, the food was on her table and it was quite simple, evenly coated with oil and salt ,the chicken was juicy and fresh .
Eating her food,Joan noticed there weren't a lot of people as lunchtime was over .She soon finished her food, drank her water and paid the bill.
Seeing it was early she went to the reception and handed her key to marry.
Walking through Manhattan's busy streets. Horses pulled carriages alongside early automobiles, while people filled the sidewalks. The air smelled of smoke, dust, and something unpleasant she couldn't ignore. After taking a look at shoes and clothes shops there were also stalls selling food on the sidewalk and shoeshiner ,brushing shoes for a man reading his newspaper.
"Extra,who wants extra news"
"Sir , do you want extra news"
Joan saw a boy selling afternoon newspapers so she bought one, and kept walking to a café across the road.
As soon as Joan stepped in , was hit by the smell of coffee filling the air. She chose a table, took a seat and ordered.
"a coffee and one slice of apple pie, please "
Joan then opened her newspaper and began reading it . Today was the 19th of September 1913 . There wasn't a lot of different news here and there , but she was looking for a rental advertisement. There was no way she was staying at a hotel for long periods of time. As much as it was expensive it wasn't very safe . A hotel has a varied types of people. Who knows when someone knocks on her door in the middle of night. She flipped to the second page to see an apartment rent with 25$ a month, it was out of her budget. When she lowered her eyes, noticed an advertisement for a boarding house .5$ a week for a small room and two meals. Well now she has nearly $10 , after paying for the room, food and coffee. If she pays for the boarding house she can sustain herself for nearly a week , she has to buy a lot of niceties .Well it's time to look for a job.
Joan finished her coffee, paid and left. After walking a distance, she felt a child running down her spine. She noticed a ginger man stalking her , seeing it's getting late to go for a job interview , Joan postponed it for tomorrow. Returning to the hotel she deliberately took turns walking through crowds until she lost him.
"So , how was Manhattan?" Mary said, smiling.
"Lively and crowded " Joan replied with a chuckle."can I ask for water and for the heater to be turned on please"
"Someone will come up in a bit" Mary said while giving her keys.
"Can I have my usual room , please"
"Good evening, Mr Jonathan, this is your key"
Joan took her keys, and escended to her room .
The moment she entered ,she checked if she lost anything, and put her cheese sandwich on the table . After waiting she heard a knock on the door.
"Please, open the door I brought water"
" Thanks for the service"
The service boy poured the water into a small washbasin , lit the heater then left.
Locking the door after him , Joan wiped her body with a wash towel changed to her pajama .Joan laid down exhausted.today was really something.
She didn't have anything else to do , so she continued browsing the newspaper to understand these times better.
Then opened her notebook and made a plan for herself, from boarding to clothing and transportation.
She continued with this until 7 o'clock.
Eating her sandwich she felt tired , so she finished her dinner, and went to bed.
