Chapter 47 - Top Brass

The Knight went from store to store, the credits they used were known as values, in the form of these runic looking coins. They are crafted by the craftsmen, then distributed according to tasks, in a modern sense it was like walking around with a bank account.

They are viewable, but are not physical, and are mostly stored in the soul. These patterns were mild and carved onto the souls of the being, the look on the person who was trying to imprint on the Knight was priceless, it was like trying to carve a diamond block using an obsidian knife.

Eventually though they managed, then given value for the knights' necessities. You could pay someone using a handshake, but the person has to be willing to receive. The craft was inspiring, it was a movement made by one of the first ever knights, one of the legendary three, to move away from material use for representing value, electricity had become less reliable.

One did not need to know the price of anything, just by doing the task, or buying a product, the value points would transfer, thus also removing most of the simple thievery. The points work for all those involved in the system, so security is still needed against those who have not been added to the system, those who have no value, and those who have come up with new tricks to scam shops.

There are added benefits too, like for one, you get this tingly feeling when you are almost out of value, and have to stop trading, it is even there when the person does not have enough, in that case no transfers is made. To see how much is left, one opens their palm and these phantom coins appear, and the summoner can interact with them.

Since the Knight did not need supplements to live, it had a small accumulation of wealth building up. The Knight did not know just how the full value system was being managed. It might have to ask someone later on, it did know if there was a connected system, but if there is, there might be an inconsistency with the values not flowing once reaching the Knight. So, the Knight had developed this habit of going to the market once in a while, and buy food, tools, and interesting looking crafts. Today the Knight would be shopping in City of Arulli.

The things in this market were more varied, but the Knight still had no need for most, but it had to keep the values flowing somehow. The Knight never took its armour off, so the market people would always have this distant look when shaking the cold steel of the Knight's gauntlet.

The Knight had grown used to them. The Knight even walked into a jewellery store, coming out disappointed, none of the things in there, could be compared to what the Knight crafted, the gift of speech alone would put them to shame. In their defence the things the Knight made, are made from eradicated souls, this one in particular from a human.

The day vanished, and the Knight found itself, lying on a soft bed, feeling none of it – being encased in armour. The Knight could take the helmet off, but there was no point, even more deadly Zuri could walk in. The Knight then pretended to sleep, by just lying there, knowing in a minute Zuri would welcome the Knight to a new morning.

Just on point the door opened. The Knight spent the whole night trying to assess the status of the true beast beneath the city of Arulli, then pretended to sleep for a minute, and Zuri walked in, 'waking' the Knight up.

"Tell me again why you do this every night boss."

The Knight shifted and looked at Zuri, got out of bed, the blankets had not been undone, then answered Mugaw in thought, 'She tends to watch me the whole night if she knows I'm not sleeping when she wakes me up for a few times and finds me up. She has been like this ever since I slept for a month. She is convinced I collapsed because I had not once slept in a long time. She has no idea that that was just a void conceived coma, I don't sleep. Also, you did make sure to use your inside voice, right?'

"Yes, I only ever speak to humans, when necessary, I detest these creatures."

Zuri interrupted their silent conversation, "You have a meeting with the Bannerets, since in a weeks' time you will be one of their knight Bachelors, as such they have made time to meet the 'interesting' new recruit. Keep in mind, although the battlefields have grown slightly quieter, they are still pressed for time, this is also why some of them are not present. They are also curious how you pushed back the darkness. I think that is all they said."

The Knight looked at her in silence, she understood, and started walking, and the Knight followed. She knew how the Knight avoided wasting time, a habit from the dungeon years, this is why she usually just went straight to the point and why she got along with it. After two decades, they needed little communication between each other.

They moved through the halls, time making the Knight remembered that it will soon have to consume another soul. This was because there are stories painted on the halls, going on about a legend the Knight did not recognise, but somehow looked like a chanty about the challenges the knights had overcome. They reached the war council room. The Knight finally saw Vice, and the others.

Her navy hair and striking blood red armour was still emanating a sense of power, briefly reminding the Knight of Blood Fiend. "This is the Knight I've been telling about; I knew when I heard those reports about a knight with a soul burning of its plume, he had arrived."

It seems they could all see it, staring at Mugaw as the Knight's gaze went around the room. On the left side of the table was a Banneret in dark silver armour, and deep brown hair, and pale glowing skin.

You have encountered a level 350 human, Banneret Jarnus. Type-Knight.

The Lady next to him, had dark indigo armour with a red plume, and a dull face, showing her boredom. Almond hair, dark skin, deep blue eyes.

You have encountered a level 364 human, Banneret Holi. Type-Knight.

There was one who still had not removed the helmet, wearing a pure white armour.

You have encountered a level 378 human, Paladin Banneret Solace. Type-Knight.

On the other side of the room were two men, one with black hair, the other with silver dark hair, showing his age, and a woman who was just as old looking, her hair was dyed ginger orange. Each was sporting a unique set of armour, a deep black similar to the Knight's, a violet shade, and a forlorn silver.

You have encountered a level 357 human, Banneret Reble. Type-Knight.

You have encountered a level 388 human, Banneret Rode. Type-Knight.

You have encountered a level 391 human, Banneret Sharli. Type-Knight.

At the head of the table was an unassuming man, wearing deep green armour. Strange with how it might attract attention on the battlefield, most of them were as strange as Zuri said, like the Knight on a shallow level. Wearing the most measured smile, and a calm attitude complimenting the blond hair.

You have encountered a level 399 human, Seneschal Devan. Type-Knight.

And there was Vice of course with her navy-blue hair, she had reached level 351. In a corner was someone peculiar, sleeping? The Knight only noticed her because she was keeping quiet, and had almost missed her, if not for the strange fact that she had a light field of darkness, almost like the void, no it is…? A human with a void territory? 'How?' The whisper of darkness always cleared things up, as it did once more.

You have encountered a level 390…soul tracing interrupted…concealment removed… you have encountered a level 447 Void Lord, Marshal Avarice. Type-Knight.

'The hell is that?' The Knight was so confused, true it had infiltrated the humans, but it had never thought it would run into an actual void lord amongst them. So many thoughts were running through the Knight's mind, the lord had removed its helmet and still looked purely human.

'Another concealment spell…?'

The Knight itself had been concealing its appearance and scent but concealing a power level? As far as the Knight knew, only it could tell the levels of beings on sight, so it was using concealment for the tools used for appraisal, which paled when compared to Whisper. The Knight was also the only one with the whisper of darkness, so the void lord had no way of knowing that the Knight was a void being too… probably.

One that could be a candidate for challenging a void lord one day. There are two questions the knight needed answered, why is it here? And one of the most important was about the void, why is everyone in here not weary of the void halo surrounding it? The Knight wanted to ask, but the others might not be able to see it, and it might decide to attack everyone here if it knew it was compromised, after all it could take them...

The Knight was so deep in thoughts, staring at Avarice that it had not heard Devan, this was the third time Devan had to repeat.

"… Knight!" The Knight then finally turned and answered, "Yes Seneschal!"
