Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 15: THE NIGHTMARE ENDS

Ethan stepped forward into the darkness.

The moment his foot crossed the invisible threshold, everything around him shifted.

Not violently.

Not suddenly.

But like the world itself was… dissolving.

The runway behind him faded first.

Then the cold air.

Then the silence.

Everything unraveled slowly, like a memory being erased piece by piece.

Ethan kept walking.

He didn't stop.

He didn't turn back.

Because for the first time—

He wasn't afraid.

The darkness ahead wasn't empty anymore.

It felt different.

Not watching.

Not waiting.

Just… there.

A quiet end.

Or maybe—

A beginning.

His thoughts slowed as he walked.

The noise in his mind faded.

The panic.

The confusion.

The fear.

All of it slipped away.

And in its place—

Calm.

A strange, unfamiliar calm.

"…So this is what it feels like," he whispered.

The words didn't echo.

They didn't disappear either.

They just existed.

Like everything else now.

The figure of the man appeared beside him again.

Walking at the same pace.

Silent at first.

"…You chose well," he said after a moment.

Ethan didn't look at him.

"…Did I?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

"…You chose to understand."

"…Most don't."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…What happens now?"

The man looked ahead.

"…You let go."

Ethan nodded faintly.

That word again.

Let go.

It didn't feel as terrifying anymore.

Not like before.

They walked in silence for a while.

No sense of time.

No sense of distance.

Just movement.

Then—

Shapes began to form ahead.

Faint at first.

Then clearer.

Lights.

Soft.

Warm.

Very different from the cold runway lights.

These felt…

Real.

Ethan slowed slightly.

"…Is that it?" he asked.

The man nodded.

"…Yes."

Ethan stared at the lights.

For a moment—

He hesitated.

Not out of fear.

But because of something else.

Something human.

"…What about the others?" he asked quietly.

"…The ones still there."

The man didn't look back.

"…They'll choose too."

"…Eventually."

Ethan nodded slowly.

That made sense.

In a strange way—

Everything made sense now.

He took a deep breath.

And stepped forward again.

The lights grew brighter.

Warmer.

Until—

Everything turned white.

✈️ Silence

For a moment—

There was nothing.

No sound.

No feeling.

No thought.

Just—

Stillness.

Then—

A sound.

Faint.

Distant.

Growing.

A beep.

Ethan's eyes snapped open.

Bright light flooded his vision.

Harsh.

Blinding.

He blinked rapidly.

Trying to focus.

Shapes formed slowly.

A ceiling.

White.

Clean.

Unfamiliar.

"…He's awake."

A voice.

Real.

Close.

Ethan turned his head slightly.

Pain shot through his body.

"…Easy," another voice said.

"…Don't move too much."

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

"…Where…?" he managed to whisper.

A woman in a uniform leaned into view.

"…You're in a hospital," she said gently.

"…You're safe."

Safe.

The word felt strange.

Uncertain.

"…What happened?" Ethan asked.

The nurse hesitated for a second.

Then—

"…There was a plane crash."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"…Crash?"

She nodded slowly.

"…Your flight. NX-417."

Ethan's mind froze.

"…You're one of the only survivors."

Silence filled the room.

Only survivor.

"…No," Ethan whispered.

"…That's not right."

Images flashed through his mind.

Daniel.

The passengers.

The loop.

"…There were others," he said.

The nurse's expression softened.

"…I'm sorry," she said quietly.

"…There weren't."

Ethan stared at her.

Unable to respond.

"…You were found in the wreckage," she continued.

"…Barely alive."

"…You're lucky."

Lucky.

Ethan turned his head slowly.

Looking out the window.

Sunlight streamed in.

Bright.

Normal.

Alive.

But something felt off.

Not wrong.

Just—

Incomplete.

Like something was missing.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

And for a split second—

He saw it.

The runway.

The darkness.

The endless loop.

Then—

Gone.

"…Get some rest," the nurse said gently.

"…You've been through a lot."

Ethan nodded faintly.

But his mind wasn't at rest.

Because deep down—

He knew.

Something about this…

Wasn't over.
