Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Into the Dead Zone

The forest around me had always been eerie, but now it felt alive, almost aware of me. Every leaf and branch seemed to bow before the golden heat pulsing inside my chest.

The pain of rejection lingered, but it was no longer fear—it was fire. A hunger to prove that I was more than a "defective orphan."

I ran. Paws pounding ash-strewn earth. The Dead Zone, the forbidden forest where no wolf survived, stretched before me. Shadows moved unnaturally, fog curling like fingers. But for the first time, I wasn't afraid. Lyra stirred inside me, sensing the power awakening.

Then it happened.

The first full shift.

Bones cracked, reshaping, stretching, reforming. Fur turned gold, wings unfurling from my shoulders in a shimmer of sunlight. My heart raced as every sense expanded—the scent of decaying leaves, the pulse of unseen animals, the distant traces of other wolves.

I roared, and the ground trembled. The Dead Zone seemed to recoil from me. The voice inside me, ancient and commanding, whispered again.

You are fire. You are survival. You are Phoenix.

From the mist, a figure emerged—tall, cloaked, eyes like molten silver.

"You've awakened," he said. "I've been waiting."

I froze. The rogue figure studied me carefully.

"I am Kaelric of the Exiled Sunfang Pack," he said. "And you… are the last Solar Phoenix-Wolf."

I staggered back. Last? Solar Phoenix? My head spun, questions bubbling. But before I could speak, a shadow lunged at me—a wolf with jagged black fur, eyes like embers.

I leapt instinctively, golden fire scorching the ground beneath me. The creature yelped and vanished into the mist.

Kaelric's eyes bore into mine. "Control it, or it will destroy you."

The Dead Zone was no longer just a forest—it was a trial, and I had just begun.
