Chapter 6 - Assigned

They didn't celebrate.

They didn't acknowledge what he had done beyond the single statement that mattered.

"He passes."

That was it.

The moment the words were spoken, the attention shifted away from Kael almost immediately. The courtyard returned to motion, training resuming as if nothing unusual had happened.

But the feeling didn't disappear.

It lingered.

Eyes still followed him.

Not openly.

Not obviously.

But enough.

Enough for him to notice.

Enough for him to understand.

He had already been marked.

"…so what now?" Kael asked.

The woman turned.

"You're assigned."

"To what?"

"Unit 17."

Kael frowned.

"…that doesn't mean anything to me."

"It will."

Of course it would.

Everything here came with answers that only made sense after you were already involved.

The silver-eyed boy stepped forward.

"Follow."

Kael glanced down at the girl.

"…what about her?"

"She'll be taken to the lower quarters," the woman said.

"Non-combatants remain separate."

The girl tightened her grip slightly.

"…you're leaving?"

Kael hesitated.

Then crouched slightly to meet her eye level.

"…I'll be around."

Not a promise.

But close enough.

She nodded slowly.

Reluctantly.

Then let go.

That was harder than it should have been.

Kael stood and turned.

"Alright," he said.

"Lead the way."

They moved through Ember Hold again, deeper this time.

The open courtyard gave way to structured corridors, the stone walls marked with faint glowing lines that pulsed softly as they passed. The deeper they went, the quieter it became.

Less chaos.

More control.

Doors lined the walls—each marked, each sealed.

Nothing here felt accidental.

Everything had a place.

The silver-eyed boy didn't speak as they walked.

Didn't look back.

But he was aware.

Kael could feel it.

"…you got a name?" Kael asked.

A pause.

Then—

"Ren."

Short.

Direct.

Kael nodded.

"…Kael."

"I know."

Right.

Of course he did.

They stopped at a reinforced door.

Ren pushed it open.

Inside—

Three figures.

Waiting.

The room wasn't large.

But it didn't need to be.

The moment Kael stepped in, he felt it.

Presence.

Three different kinds.

Three different pressures.

All focused on him.

The first was a girl.

Dark hair tied back.

Eyes sharp.

Observant.

Not aggressive.

But not welcoming either.

The second—

Huge.

Broad.

Built like he had been carved from stone.

Arms crossed.

Expression unreadable.

The third—

Quiet.

Still.

Watching.

That one felt the most dangerous.

Kael stepped fully into the room.

"…guess I'm late."

No one smiled.

No one reacted.

The silence stretched.

Then—

The girl spoke.

"…you're the one from the courtyard."

Not a question.

Kael shrugged slightly.

"…seems like it."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…you don't have a relic."

There it was again.

That statement.

Kael leaned against the wall slightly.

"…so I've been told."

The large one finally spoke.

"…and yet you passed."

His voice was low.

Heavy.

Measured.

Kael met his gaze.

"…guess I did."

A pause.

Then—

"…that makes you a risk."

Kael smiled slightly.

"…I'm getting that impression."

The quiet one in the corner finally moved.

Just slightly.

Enough to shift attention.

"…or an asset."

That changed the room.

Not the tension.

The direction of it.

The girl crossed her arms.

"…we'll see which."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…yeah, I figured that would be the theme here."

No one argued.

Because that was exactly what this was.

A test.

Not just of strength.

Of control.

Of trust.

And Kael hadn't earned any of that yet.

Not here.

Not with them.

Not with himself.

Inside him—

The hunger stirred again.

Quiet.

Patient.

Waiting.

Kael pushed away from the wall.

"…so what now?"

The girl answered.

"…now we see if you can keep up."
