Chapter 4 - Echoes of the hunt

Chapter 4(Scene 1) ; The forest didn't recover.

Even after the battle ended—

Even after the last hound fell—

Something lingered.

A presence.

Faint.

But watching.

Kael stood still, his chest rising slowly as the remnants of the fight settled around him. Broken trees, torn earth, and the faint scent of something unnatural fading into the air.

"…They're not normal," he said.

The girl wiped her blade clean against the cloth at her waist before slipping it away.

"No," she replied.

A pause.

"They're not supposed to exist."

Kael glanced at her.

"…That's becoming a pattern."

She didn't smile.

Instead, her gaze shifted toward the deeper parts of the forest.

"…We need to move."

Kael frowned slightly.

"They're all dead."

Silence.

Then—

She shook her head.

"…Those were just scouts."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…You're serious."

She met his gaze.

"…Do I look like I'm joking?"

No.

She didn't.

Kael exhaled.

"…Alright."

But he didn't move.

Instead—

He looked at her properly for the first time.

"…You still haven't told me your name."

She hesitated.

Just slightly.

Then—

"…Lyra."

Kael nodded once.

"Kael."

She tilted her head.

"I know."

Kael blinked.

"…That's new."

Lyra turned, already starting to walk.

"Not really."

Kael followed after a second.

"…So you've been watching me longer than I thought."

"…Yes."

"…Creepy."

"…Necessary."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…I'll decide that later."

They moved quickly through the forest again, but this time—

Not running blindly.

Lyra had a direction.

A purpose.

And Kael could feel it—

They were heading somewhere specific.

"…Where are we going?" he asked.

"…Somewhere they won't follow."

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"…You sure about that?"

Lyra didn't answer immediately.

"…No."

Kael chuckled.

"…Honest. I like that."

They continued in silence for a while.

But the deeper they went—

The more the forest changed.

It grew… older.

The trees thicker.

The air heavier.

The light dimmer—even though it was still morning.

And then—

Kael felt it.

Something beneath the surface.

Not movement.

Not presence.

Something… ancient.

He slowed slightly.

"…What is this place?"

Lyra stopped.

For the first time since they met—

She looked… cautious.

"…A grave."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…For what?"

Silence.

Then—

She answered.

"…For things that shouldn't come back."

A pause.

"…Like me?" Kael asked.

Lyra didn't respond.

That was enough.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Great. That's comforting."

But even as he spoke—

He felt it again.

That pull.

Deep inside him.

Something reacting.

Something calling.

Kael's gaze shifted forward.

"…There's something here."

Lyra's expression tightened slightly.

"…I know."

"…And it's not dead."

She didn't deny it.

Instead—

She stepped forward again.

"…Stay close."

Kael smirked faintly.

"I was planning to."

They moved deeper.

Step by step.

Until—

They reached it.

A clearing.

Large.

Silent.

And at its center—

A massive structure.

Ruins.

Ancient.

Broken pillars.

Crumbling stone.

Symbols carved into the ground—faded, but still there.

Kael stopped.

"…This wasn't made by humans."

Lyra nodded slowly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…It was made to contain them."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Them?"

The wind moved softly through the ruins.

And for a brief moment—

Everything felt wrong.

Like something had just—

Shifted.

Kael's instincts flared instantly.

"…We're not alone."

Lyra turned sharply.

"…No."

A pause.

Then—

Her voice dropped.

"…We're too late."

Something moved inside the ruins.

Slow.

Heavy.

Not like the hounds.

Not like the hunters.

Something older.

Something worse.

Kael's golden eyes burned.

"…Good."

Lyra glanced at him.

"…You say that a lot."

Kael smiled slightly.

"…Because it keeps getting interesting."

The ground trembled.

And from the darkness of the ruins—

Something began to rise.

Chapter 4 (Scene 2) ;

The ground trembled again.

Low.

Heavy.

Like something massive was shifting beneath the ruins.

Kael didn't move.

His golden eyes locked onto the center of the clearing, every sense sharpened to its peak.

"…That's not a hound," he said quietly.

Lyra's grip tightened slightly.

"…No."

Another rumble.

A crack split across the stone floor of the ruins.

Dust rose.

Small fragments broke away—

Then something underneath pushed upward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Like it had all the time in the world.

Kael felt it before he fully saw it.

That presence.

Ancient.

Not wild like the hounds.

Not controlled like the hunters.

Something else.

Something that didn't belong in either category.

"Careful…"

The voice i

nside him had changed again.

Quieter.

More… serious.

"…this one remembers."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…Remembers what?"

No answer.

Then—

The stone gave way.

CRACK.

A massive section of the ruins collapsed inward—

And something rose from beneath it.

At first—

Only a shape.

Large.

Humanoid.

Then—

Details.

Dark, stone-like skin cracked with faint glowing lines beneath the surface. Its body was massive—easily twice Kael's height, with long arms that ended in jagged, claw-like extensions.

Its head tilted slightly as it emerged fully into the light.

Its eyes—

Burned.

Not gold.

Not blue.

A deep, molten red.

Kael felt it instantly.

"…That thing's alive."

Lyra stepped back slightly.

"…It shouldn't be."

The creature moved its arm slowly.

Stone cracked.

Dust fell.

Its movements were stiff—

At first.

Then—

Smoother.

More controlled.

Like something waking up after a long sleep.

Kael took a step forward.

"…You sealed this thing here?"

Lyra shook her head.

"…Not me."

A pause.

"…Something older."

The creature's head turned.

Slowly.

Until—

Its gaze locked onto Kael.

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

It spoke.

"…Ashfang…"

The voice was broken.

Rough.

Like stone grinding against stone.

Kael froze.

"…It knows me."

"No…"

The voice inside him corrected.

"…it knows your blood."

The creature took a step forward.

The ground sank slightly beneath its weight.

"…Alpha…" it growled.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…You've got a lot to explain."

The creature didn't respond.

Instead—

Its body shifted.

The cracks along its surface glowed brighter.

Power.

Ancient power.

Leaking through.

Lyra's voice came sharp.

"…Don't let it finish waking up!"

Kael didn't ask questions.

He moved.

Fast.

Closing the distance instantly—

His claw slashed forward—

CLANG.

The impact rang out.

But—

It didn't cut.

Kael's eyes flickered.

"…That's new."

The creature didn't flinch.

Instead—

It moved.

Its arm swung.

Slow—

But heavy.

Too heavy.

Kael barely managed to shift—

BOOM.

The impact shattered the ground beside him, sending a shockwave that threw him backward.

Kael landed hard, skidding across the stone.

"…Okay," he muttered.

"…That's not normal."

Lyra moved in.

Fast.

Her blade flashed—

Striking at the creature's side—

This time—

CRACK.

A small fracture formed.

The creature reacted.

Its head snapped toward her—

And it roared.

The sound wasn't loud.

It was deep.

Heavy.

Like something ancient had just been disturbed.

Lyra jumped back instantly.

"…It's not fully awake yet!" she called.

Kael pushed himself up.

"…And when it is?"

Silence.

Then—

"…We won't be able to stop it."

Kael's lips curved slightly.

"…Then we stop it now."

The creature stepped forward again.

Faster this time.

More stable.

More awake.

Kael's eyes burned brighter.

"…Yeah."

Power surged through him again.

Controlled.

Focused.

Different from before.

He stepped forward—

And this time—

He didn't strike blindly.

He aimed.

The cracks.

The glowing lines beneath the surface.

The weak points.

He moved—

Faster than before—

Stronger than before—

His claw drove forward—

CRACK.

This time—

It broke.

The creature staggered slightly.

For the first time—

It reacted.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…That's more like it."

But then—

The creature smiled.

Kael froze.

"…That's not good."

The glowing cracks spread.

Faster.

Brighter.

Its body shifted—

Evolving.

Adapting.

Just like him.

Lyra's voice cut through sharply—

"…Kael—move!"

Too late.

The creature vanished.

Not fast—

Gone.

Kael's instincts screamed—

He turned—

But—

A massive hand slammed into him.

BOOM.

The ground shattered as Kael was driven into it, a crater forming beneath his body.

Silence.

Dust filled the air.

Lyra's eyes widened.

"…It's already adapting…"

The creature stood over the crater.

Looking down.

Watching.

"…Alpha…" it growled again.

Something in its voice had changed.

Recognition.

Hunger.

Kael's fingers twitched in the rubble.

Then—

He laughed.

Low.

Dangerous.

"…Yeah…"

His eyes snapped open.

Burning gold.

"…now you've got my attention."

Chapter 4(Scene 3) ;

The crater cracked.

Dust shifted.

Stone broke apart—

And Kael rose.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

His body was buried moments ago.

Crushed.

Driven into the ground like he was nothing.

But now—

He stood.

Blood ran down the side of his face.

His arm hung slightly lower than before.

His breathing—

Still steady.

Too steady.

"…That actually hurt," he muttered.

The creature watched him.

Unmoving.

Its molten red eyes flickered slightly—

Not with rage.

With recognition.

"…Ashfang…" it growled again.

Kael wiped the blood from his lip.

"Yeah. You keep saying that."

A pause.

"…Got a point?"

The creature stepped forward.

This time—

Faster.

The ground cracked beneath its weight as it closed the distance in an instant.

Kael didn't dodge.

He stepped forward too.

Both of them moved at the same time—

CLASH.

The impact exploded outward.

Kael's claw met the creature's arm—

CRACK.

The shockwave ripped through the ruins, sending broken stone and dust flying in every direction.

Kael pushed.

This time—

He didn't get thrown back.

His feet dug into the ground—

Holding.

"…Better," he muttered.

The creature tilted its head.

Then—

It pushed back.

BOOM.

The ground beneath Kael shattered again as he was forced backward several meters, carving a deep line through the ruins.

But he didn't fall.

He stopped himself.

He held.

His eyes burned brighter.

"…Okay…"

A slow breath.

"…now we're getting somewhere."

"Don't let it set the pace."

The voice inside him was sharp now.

Focused.

"You're not reacting anymore."

Kael's fingers flexed.

"…I know."

He moved again.

But this time—

Different.

No wasted motion.

No hesitation.

He didn't charge.

He circled.

Watching.

Studying.

The creature turned with him.

Mirroring.

Adapting.

"…You learn fast," Kael said.

The creature didn't answer.

But its body shifted slightly.

Adjusting.

Preparing.

Kael smirked faintly.

"…Yeah."

Then—

He vanished.

Not straight forward—

Sideways.

He reappeared at the creature's flank—

Claw aimed directly at one of the glowing cracks—

STRIKE.

CRACK.

The hit landed.

This time—

Deeper.

The creature staggered.

Its body twisted—

But Kael was already moving again.

Second strike—

Another crack.

Third—

Deeper damage.

The glowing lines flickered violently.

For a moment—

It looked like it might break.

Then—

It stopped.

Everything stopped.

Kael froze mid-motion.

"…What?"

The creature's head tilted again.

Then—

It spoke.

"…You are incomplete."

The words hit like a shock.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…What?"

The creature stepped forward.

Slow.

Heavy.

"…Half awake…" it continued.

"…half broken…"

Kael's grip tightened.

"…You talk too much."

He moved again—

Faster—

Stronger—

His claw drove forward—

But—

The creature caught it.

Stopped it completely.

Kael's eyes widened.

"…That's new."

The creature's grip tightened.

CRACK.

Pain shot through Kael's arm.

Then—

It slammed him down.

BOOM.

The ground shattered again as Kael was driven into it for the second time.

Lyra moved.

Fast.

She darted in from the side—

Her blade glowing faintly now—

Not just black—

Something deeper.

She struck—

CRACK.

This time—

The damage spread faster.

The creature reacted immediately.

Its free arm swung toward her—

Too fast.

Lyra barely dodged—

The force of the swing sending her flying backward.

She landed hard, sliding across the stone.

"…It's adapting faster now!" she shouted.

Kael pushed himself up again.

His arm—

Not broken.

But close.

"…Yeah…"

He rolled his shoulder slightly.

It snapped back into place.

"…I noticed."

The creature stood still again.

Watching them both now.

Assessing.

Learning.

Kael's eyes flickered.

"…It's not just reacting."

A pause.

"…It's studying us."

Lyra stood again, wiping blood from the corner of her mouth.

"…That's what they were made to do."

Kael glanced at her.

"…Made?"

She hesitated.

"…Later."

The creature moved again.

This time—

No warning.

It split its focus.

One step toward Kael—

Then—

Shifted—

Toward Lyra.

Too fast to predict.

"…Lyra—!"

Kael moved instantly—

But the creature was already there.

Its hand shot forward—

Aimed directly at her chest—

She couldn't dodge in time—

So—

She did something else.

She stopped.

Completely.

Her eyes—

Changed.

Not fully.

But enough.

A faint glow flickered beneath them.

Wild.

Uncontrolled.

Dangerous.

Kael felt it instantly.

"…What…?"

The creature paused.

Just for a second.

That was enough.

Lyra moved.

Not like before.

Faster.

Sharper.

Her blade cut through the air—

And this time—

It pierced deep.

CRACK.

A massive fracture spread across the creature's chest.

It roared—

Stepping back—

For the first time—

Hurt.

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"…So you were holding back too."

Lyra didn't answer.

But her breathing—

Was different.

Less controlled.

More raw.

The creature steadied itself.

Its glowing cracks flickered violently now.

Unstable.

But not defeated.

Not yet.

Kael stepped forward again.

Slow.

Deliberate.

"…We end it here."

Lyra glanced at him.

Then nodded once.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

For the first time—

They were in sync.

Perfectly.

The creature roared again—

And charged.

Kael and Lyra moved at the same time.

And the ruins shook.
