Chapter 3 - Ch 3

Kenji didn't sleep that night.

Not because he couldn't.

But because every time he closed his eyes, something inside him shifted.

Moved.

Buzzed.

"…You're staring again," the voice inside him said, cheerful as ever.

Kenji lay flat on his back, staring at the cracked ceiling of his apartment. "…You're inside my head. Where else am I supposed to look?"

A pause.

"…That's fair."

He exhaled slowly, one arm resting over his face. The energy inside him felt completely different now. Before, it had been something heavy and cold—cursed energy, raw and unstable, but still manageable.

Now?

Now it felt like a storm trapped under his skin.

It moved.

It pulsed.

It reacted to his thoughts.

"…This is gonna be a problem," he muttered.

"No it's not!" the voice chirped. "You just need to get used to it!"

Kenji lowered his arm slightly, eyes half-lidded. "…You say that like I just installed new software, not a walking natural disaster."

"I'm not a disaster!"

"…Debatable."

A soft huff echoed in his mind, almost offended.

Kenji sat up slowly, rolling his shoulders as he focused inward. The presence of Chōmei was clear now—bright, active, constantly aware. Not suffocating like he expected. Not overwhelming in a hostile way.

Just… there.

Like a second consciousness.

"…Alright," he said quietly. "Rules."

"Rules?" Chōmei repeated.

"Yeah. Ground rules. You don't take over my body. You don't mess with my control. And you definitely don't start talking when I'm around people."

"…What if I really want to?"

"Then don't."

A pause.

"…You're no fun."

Kenji smirked faintly. "I didn't get reincarnated to entertain you."

"…You kinda did."

"…Shut up."

But despite the sarcasm, something about it felt… easier than expected.

He wasn't alone anymore.

And that was dangerous.

But also useful.

Very useful.

---

The next morning, Kenji stood in an abandoned lot on the edge of the city.

Empty.

Quiet.

Perfect.

"Alright," he muttered, flexing his fingers slightly. "Let's see what you actually do."

"Finally!" Chōmei sounded excited.

Kenji took a slow breath, focusing on the energy inside him.

Before, his cursed energy had been something he had to force into shape. Now—

It moved on its own.

Naturally.

Like it had always been there.

"…That's new," he said under his breath.

"It's because I'm helping!" Chōmei replied proudly.

"Yeah, I figured."

Kenji raised his hand.

Cursed energy gathered instinctively—but this time, it didn't just gather.

It changed.

Crackling.

Shifting.

Lightning flickered briefly across his fingertips before dissipating just as quickly.

Kenji blinked.

"…Okay."

"That was cool!" Chōmei said.

"That was uncontrolled," Kenji corrected.

But his eyes sharpened slightly.

"Do it again."

He focused harder this time, guiding the flow instead of letting it run wild. The energy responded, slower but more stable. A faint spark formed again, dancing along his fingers like a living thing.

Then vanished.

Kenji frowned slightly.

"…So it's there. Just not stable yet."

"You'll get it!" Chōmei said brightly.

"Yeah," Kenji muttered. "I will."

---

Days passed.

Then weeks.

Training became routine.

Control came first.

Always control.

Kenji spent hours just standing still, focusing on circulating cursed energy without letting it spike or leak. It was harder now—his reserves had increased massively, and the added volatility made suppression more difficult.

But he adapted.

He always did.

"…Again," he muttered one evening, sweat running down his face.

Lightning flickered.

This time, it didn't disappear immediately.

It stayed.

A thin arc of electricity danced between his fingers, unstable but real.

Kenji's lips curled slightly.

"…There we go."

"That's Storm Release!" Chōmei said excitedly.

"Yeah," Kenji replied. "And it's barely under control."

But it was progress.

And progress was enough.

---

Merge didn't stop either.

If anything, it evolved alongside him.

Now, with greater energy, he could handle more complex combinations. Stronger cursed spirits. More stable constructs. Better results.

One night, he stood in the middle of a quiet rooftop, several small shikigami floating around him.

"Alright," he said, eyes scanning them carefully. "Let's try something new."

Two bird-like spirits hovered slightly above the rest.

Fast.

Light.

Fragile.

Perfect.

"Merge."

The two collided instantly, their forms twisting together as energy surged violently between them. This time, the process was smoother—controlled, guided.

Intentional.

The light faded.

And something new emerged.

Larger.

Sharper.

Wings crackling faintly with energy.

Kenji stared at it, eyes narrowing slightly.

"…Not bad."

The creature let out a low, electric hum as it flapped its wings once, stabilizing in the air.

"Whoa!" Chōmei sounded impressed. "That one's cool!"

Kenji smirked faintly. "Yeah. It is."

The bird circled once before landing lightly in front of him, head tilting slightly as if observing him.

"…You'll do," Kenji muttered.

---

Life stabilized again.

But this time, it was different.

He wasn't just surviving anymore.

He was growing.

Every day, his control improved. Every night, his techniques sharpened. Merge became second nature. Storm Release became less chaotic.

And his presence—

His presence started to change.

Even suppressed, it wasn't the same anymore.

It lingered.

Like something waiting.

Something building.

---

One evening, Kenji stood on a rooftop, looking out over the city.

Tokyo stretched endlessly in front of him, lights flickering in the distance.

"…You're thinking again," Chōmei said.

"Yeah."

"…About the future?"

Kenji was quiet for a moment.

Then—

"…About him."

No need to say the name.

They both knew.

Mahito.

Kenji's eyes darkened slightly.

"I'm still not ready," he admitted.

"Not yet," Chōmei agreed.

"But I will be."

The wind shifted slightly.

And far away—

A man stopped walking.

White hair.

Blindfold.

Hands in his pockets.

Satoru Gojo tilted his head slightly.

"…That's new."

His lips curved into a small smile.

"Something interesting just showed up."

And somewhere in the city—

A storm quietly continued to grow.
