Chapter 1 - The perfect family

The chandeliers of the Santiago estate sparkled like frozen stars, their golden light

spilling across marble floors that gleamed with such brilliance they could have been

carved from ice.

Outside, the manicured gardens stretched like a palace's crown, dotted with roses so

precisely arranged it was impossible to imagine them growing wild.

In Mexico City, there was wealth, there was power, and then there were the Santiagos.

At the center of it all stood Ana Santiago.

The first daughter of billionaire Gabriel Santiago, heir to Santiago Corporation, Ana had grown into the kind of woman who could silence a room without speaking a word.

Her raven-black hair tumbled in soft waves down her back, contrasting sharply with the

pale silk of her evening dress. Her beauty was undeniable, but it was her composure that effortless elegance, the way she seemed both graceful and untouchable that kept people watching.

Yet, tonight, there was warmth in her eyes. A secret smile. Because seated beside her, at

the edge of the long mahogany dining table, was Alejandro Cruz.

Alejandro was not like the other men who lingered around the Santiago family, not

molded from polished privilege or gilded arrogance. He came from a middle-class

background, the son of a respected but modest Baker.

His charm was quieter, his ambition written not in expensive suits but in the intensity of

his gaze. And though Gabriel Santiago had made it clear repeatedly that Alejandro was

not suited for his daughter, Ana's heart had chosen him anyway.

Tonight's dinner was supposed to be a celebration.

Of family.

Of tradition.

Of unity.

But beneath the surface, tension curled like smoke.

At the head of the table, Gabriel Santiago raised his glass. In his mid-sixties, he still

carried himself with the commanding presence of a man who had built an empire with his bare hands. His voice, deep and measured, rolled across the room.

"To family," Gabriel said. "May we remain strong, loyal, and unshaken no matter what

storms may come."

The words lingered. Heavy. Almost prophetic.

Across from Ana, her stepmother, Mariana Ramos de Santiago, leaned forward with a

dazzling smile. She was breathtaking, the kind of woman whose beauty was as sharp as it was intoxicating golden hair falling over her shoulders, emerald eyes glittering like

jewels.

But for all her elegance, Ana had long ago learned that Mariana's charm was a mask.

Beneath it lay ambition, greed, and a ruthlessness that whispered of danger.

"Beautifully said, querido," Mariana purred, touching Gabriel's arm lightly. Too lightly, as

if her affection were a performance meant for the audience at the table.

Beside her sat Isabella Ramos, Ana's stepsister. Younger by a year, Isabella had inherited her mother's striking features but none of her grace. Where Ana was refined, Isabella burned with envy, her beauty edged with bitterness.

She hid it well behind a veneer of sweetness, but Ana always felt the sharpness of her stare, as though Isabella resented every breath Ana took.

And tonight, that stare seemed sharper than ever.

Ana shifted in her chair, her hand brushing Alejandro's beneath the tablecloth. He

squeezed her fingers discreetly, grounding her, reminding her of why she had chosen

love over wealth's suffocating expectations.

But still, Gabriel's earlier warning echoed in her mind.

"Not every man is built for this world, Ana. Alejandro may love you, but love will not

protect you when loyalty is tested. Remember that."

It had been weeks since Gabriel said it, but the words refused to fade.

As the meal continued, conversation rose and fell between business ventures, social

events, and whispered rumors of Santiago Corporation's rivals. Yet Ana felt an

undercurrent.

A dissonance. Her father's toast replayed itself in her head, and every glance exchanged between Mariana and Isabella carried too much meaning.

And then there was Alejandro.

He was polite, careful, even deferential to Gabriel but Ana couldn't shake the subtle way Isabella's attention lingered on him. The laugh that was just a little too loud at his joke.

The touch that lasted a second too long when she poured him wine.

It was nothing, Ana told herself. Isabella had always tried to compete with her, always

sought to outshine her.

From College, to Ana being the most attractive for guys, to being preferred and loved by everyone they met.

This was no different.

But when she looked up, she caught her father watching Alejandro with eyes that

seemed to already know something she did not.

Her father has distrust for average or middle class men, because of past experiences

growing up and he's idea is everyone wants something from them.

A chill swept through her.

The evening ended with practiced elegance, Mariana bidding their guests farewell with

honeyed words, Isabella retreating upstairs with a theatrical yawn, Gabriel vanishing into

his study as he always did.

Ana and Alejandro walked hand in hand through the grand hallway. The silence between them was not heavy, but Ana's thoughts were.

"You've been quiet," Alejandro said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

She smiled faintly, but her heart was not in it. "Just thinking."

"About what?"

She hesitated. "My father. His words tonight. The way he looks at you sometimes, as if

he's waiting for you to slip."

Alejandro's jaw tightened, but he forced a smile. "He doesn't trust me because I'm not

one of them. But I'll prove myself, Ana. To him. To everyone. You'll see."

" I know he's trying to protect you and it's the duty of every parent to"

He cupped her face with his hands, looking her in the eyes.

" I promise, I'm not like everyone else… I love you and I won't take this, Us for granted.

"I know how we both fought tooth and nail to be together, I cherish you Ana"

She wanted to believe him. She did.

" I cherish and love you too, please promise me you won't let me down"

" I promise"

They both exchanged glances, having lots of tension in them and they kissed.

" Let's go home", Cruz said.

Yet when she glanced back toward the dining room, she thought she saw Mariana

standing in the shadows, watching them.

And for a moment , just a moment , Ana wondered if it was not her father she should be worried about.
