Chapter 2 - The Truth Behind the Mask

Lila didn't realize she was smiling until a stranger bumped into her.

"Sorry," she murmured absentmindedly, barely slowing down as she stepped out onto the busy sidewalk.

Her mind was still at the restaurant.

At Table 7.

At him.

Adrian.

She replayed every moment—the way he spoke, the calm confidence in his voice, the way his eyes seemed to see more than he said.

It felt unreal.

Too perfect.

And yet…

Her phone buzzed.

Lila blinked, snapping back to reality as she glanced down at the screen.

Unknown Number.

She hesitated, then answered.

"Hello?"

Silence.

A faint static.

Then—

"Stay away from him."

The line went dead.

Lila froze.

"What…?"

She pulled the phone away, staring at it as if it might explain itself.

Her heart began to beat faster.

Stay away from who?

Adrian?

A chill crept down her spine.

She turned instinctively, scanning the street behind her.

People walked past. Cars moved. Nothing looked unusual.

And yet…

For a brief second—

She felt watched.

Back at the restaurant, Adrian stood near the window, his expression darker than before.

His phone was pressed to his ear.

"I told you not to contact me unless it was urgent."

On the other end, his head of security spoke quickly, tension clear in his voice.

"It is urgent. We intercepted movement tonight. Someone's tracking you."

Adrian's gaze shifted toward the street—toward the direction Lila had gone.

"Who?"

"We're not sure yet. But this isn't random."

A pause.

Then—

"They took photos."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Of course they did.

"They saw her," the voice continued.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Adrian ended the call slowly.

For the first time in years, something unfamiliar settled in his chest.

Concern.

Not for himself.

For her.

The next morning—

Lila's world shattered.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS HIM?!"

Her best friend, Tessa, shoved a tablet into her hands, eyes wide with disbelief.

"Read it!"

Lila frowned, confused, then looked down.

And froze.

The headline read:

"TRILLIONAIRE ADRIAN COLE SPOTTED ON SECRET DATE – MYSTERY WOMAN IDENTIFIED?"

Her breath caught.

Her eyes moved shakily across the screen.

There he was.

No mistake.

The same man.

The same calm expression.

The same night.

Her stomach dropped.

"This… this isn't possible," she whispered.

Tessa stared at her. "Tell me that's not the guy you went out with."

Lila didn't answer.

She couldn't.

Because it was.

Her hands trembled slightly as she scrolled.

Adrian Cole.

CEO. Billionaire—no, trillionaire.

One of the most powerful men in the world.

And she—

She had walked up to him and said, "Are you my blind date?"

"Oh my God…" she breathed.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The way he carried himself.

The way he spoke.

The way the entire room seemed to shift around him.

And he—

He said nothing.

"He lied to you," Tessa said, anger rising.

Lila shook her head slowly.

"No… he didn't lie."

She swallowed hard.

"He just didn't correct me."

That somehow felt worse.

Her phone buzzed again.

Same unknown number.

Her heart skipped.

Slowly, she answered.

"…Hello?"

This time, the voice was different.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Lila."

Her breath caught.

Adrian.

"Where did you get my number?" she demanded immediately, anger cutting through her shock.

"I have my ways."

"Of course you do," she snapped. "You're a trillionaire."

A brief silence.

"I assume you've seen the news."

"Oh, I've seen it," she said coldly. "Anything else you forgot to mention? Secret identity? Double life? Hidden kingdom?"

"Can we meet?"

"No."

Silence.

Then—

"You're in danger."

Her grip tightened on the phone.

"What?"

"Just meet me," Adrian said, his tone firmer now. "One hour. I'll send the address."

The call ended.

Lila stared at her phone.

Her instincts screamed at her to ignore him.

To walk away.

To pretend none of this ever happened.

But the memory of that voice from last night echoed in her head—

Stay away from him.

An hour later—

She stood inside the most luxurious penthouse she had ever seen.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooked the entire city. Everything about the place screamed wealth, power… control.

And in the center of it all—

Was him.

Adrian turned as she entered, his expression unreadable.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then—

"You owe me an explanation," Lila said sharply.

"I do."

"Start talking."

Adrian studied her carefully.

She looked different.

Not softer.

Not curious.

Angry.

Hurt.

Good.

It meant she wasn't naive.

"I didn't plan for last night to happen," he began.

"Clearly," she cut in. "Because if you had, you would've picked someone who actually knew who you were."

His gaze sharpened slightly.

"You think that matters to me?"

"Yes," she snapped. "Because everything about you screams control. And last night? That wasn't control. That was… deception."

A pause.

Then Adrian exhaled slowly.

"You're right."

That caught her off guard.

"But right now," he continued, "that's not the problem."

Lila crossed her arms. "Then what is?"

"You."

She blinked.

"What?"

"They saw you with me," Adrian said calmly. "And that makes you a target."

The words landed heavily.

Lila let out a small, disbelieving laugh.

"You're joking."

"I'm not."

"My life is not some action movie," she said. "People don't just become 'targets' because they went on a bad date."

"This isn't a bad date," Adrian said quietly.

Silence.

Lila hesitated.

Then—

"What do you mean?"

Adrian walked toward her slowly, his presence overwhelming in the quiet space.

"I have enemies," he said simply.

"Everyone has enemies."

"Not like mine."

Something in his tone made her stomach tighten.

"The picture from last night is already circulating," he continued. "People are asking questions. Who you are. Why you were with me."

"So?" she said, though her voice was less certain now.

"So they'll find out."

A pause.

"And when they do…"

Her heart began to race.

"They'll use you."

Silence filled the room.

Lila shook her head, backing away slightly.

"No. No, I didn't sign up for this. Whatever this is—I want out."

"You don't have that option anymore."

Her eyes flashed.

"Don't tell me what options I have."

Adrian's gaze held hers.

Steady.

Unmoving.

"Then let me give you one."

He reached for a document on the table and placed it in front of her.

"A contract."

Lila stared at it.

Then at him.

Suspicion, disbelief, and anger all collided at once.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"One year," Adrian said.

Her breath hitched slightly.

"A contract marriage."

The room fell silent again.

But this time—

It felt like everything had just changed.
