Chapter 1 - Chapter 2: The First Hunt

The forest swallowed the last traces of light.

Kael followed in silence.

The wolves moved like shadows between the trees—soundless, effortless. Even in the snow, they left barely a trace. Kael tried to match their pace, but his body was heavier, slower. Every step reminded him that he didn't belong here.

Not yet.

Branches scraped against his arms as he pushed deeper into the forest. The air changed the further they went—colder, sharper. It carried a scent he couldn't quite place.

Wild.

Alive.

Dangerous.

The wolves finally stopped in a small clearing surrounded by towering trees. Moonlight filtered through the branches above, painting the snow in pale silver.

Kael halted at the edge.

His chest rose and fell quickly, exhaustion catching up to him all at once.

"Why did you bring me here…" he muttered.

The wolves didn't answer.

Of course they didn't.

One of them—larger than the rest, its fur darker, eyes brighter—stepped forward. It studied Kael carefully, its gaze unblinking.

Judging him.

Kael felt a strange pressure in the air, like the moment before a storm breaks.

Then the wolf turned its head slightly.

A signal.

The rest of the pack spread out, forming a loose circle around the clearing.

Kael's body stiffened.

"This again…" he said under his breath, his fingers curling into fists.

But something was different.

They weren't closing in.

They were… waiting.

Waiting for him.

A sudden crack echoed through the forest.

Kael's head snapped toward the sound.

From the darkness beyond the clearing, something moved—fast, heavy, tearing through the undergrowth.

Not a wolf.

Something bigger.

A massive boar burst into the clearing, its body covered in thick, jagged hide, tusks curved like blades. Its eyes were wild, almost crazed, steam rising from its nostrils.

Kael took a step back instinctively.

"Are you serious…?"

The wolves didn't move.

They watched.

The boar's gaze locked onto Kael.

Target found.

It charged.

Kael barely had time to react. He threw himself to the side as the beast tore past him, its tusks slicing through the air where he had stood moments before.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

"I can't fight that…" he muttered, scrambling to his feet.

But there was nowhere to run.

The wolves blocked every path out.

Not trapping him.

Forcing him.

Kael's breathing grew heavier as the boar turned again, pawing at the ground before charging once more.

"Damn it!"

This time, he didn't run.

Not fully.

At the last second, he shifted his weight and twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the tusks. His hand slammed against the boar's side as it passed—

And pain exploded through his arm.

The mark.

It burned.

Kael gasped, dropping to one knee as heat surged through his body. His vision blurred, his senses sharpening all at once.

He could hear everything.

The crunch of snow beneath the boar's hooves.

The slow, steady breathing of the wolves.

His own heartbeat… loud, powerful.

Too powerful.

"What… is happening…?"

The boar charged again.

But this time—

Kael didn't see it as a blur.

He saw everything.

Every movement.

Every shift of muscle.

Every opening.

His body moved on instinct.

He stepped forward instead of back.

At the last moment, he ducked low, sliding beneath the sweeping tusks. His hand shot out, gripping one of them—

Strength surged through him.

Raw.

Violent.

Unfamiliar.

With a sharp twist, he forced the boar's head to the side, throwing it off balance. The beast roared, skidding across the snow.

Kael staggered back, staring at his own hands.

"That was… me?"

The boar wasn't done.

It rose again, angrier now, more dangerous.

But Kael didn't feel fear anymore.

Something inside him had changed.

The burning in his arm spread across his body, not painful now—but powerful.

Alive.

The wolves leaned forward slightly, watching more intently.

Kael lowered his stance.

"Alright…" he said quietly, his voice steadier than before.

"Let's finish this."

The boar charged one last time.

Kael moved.

Faster.

Sharper.

This time, he didn't dodge.

He met it head-on.

At the final moment, he shifted to the side and drove his arm forward with everything he had. His hand struck just behind the boar's jaw—

A precise, brutal hit.

A crack echoed through the clearing.

The beast collapsed, its massive body skidding to a stop in the snow.

Silence followed.

Kael stood there, frozen, his arm still extended, breath ragged.

He waited.

The boar didn't move again.

It was over.

Slowly, Kael lowered his hand.

The burning faded.

The strength with it.

Exhaustion hit him like a wave, his legs nearly giving out beneath him.

"I… did that…" he whispered.

The wolves approached.

Not as hunters.

Not as enemies.

The large one stepped forward again, stopping just a few feet away.

For a long moment, it simply looked at him.

Then—

It lowered its head.

The rest of the pack followed.

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"…What?"

The cold wind passed through the clearing, carrying the distant echo of that same haunting howl.

But now…

It didn't feel like a warning.

It felt like recognition.

Kael looked down at the fallen beast, then at his trembling hands.

Then back at the wolves.

A slow realization settled in his chest.

This wasn't the end of his path.

It was the beginning.
