Chapter 79 - [79] Angels

The sewage beneath their feet, tainted by this surging power, began to boil, churning out clusters of foul bubbles.

If an ordinary person were standing here right now, their brain would be completely corrupted by the demonic power within seconds, mutating into a mindless lesser demon driven by nothing but bloodlust.

Soon, the mass of flesh transformed into a humanoid demon covered in jagged barbs.

The demon's exterior was clad in withered, dark green skin. Its head resembled a skinned wolf, lacking lips or a jaw, leaving sharp teeth exposed to the air and dripping with saliva.

It possessed four muscular arms, each ending in razor-sharp claws, and its entire being radiated the oppressive aura of a greater demon.

"Hmph, finally showing your true form."

Sephirot's gaze was icy. With a cross-motion of his hands, the deer blade pair slid into his palms.

The tunnel was too narrow; the deer blade was better suited for combat in this terrain.

The demon let out a guttural roar, its four arms flailing in the air as it lunged at Sephirot.

Sephirot did not retreat; instead, he surged forward.

Bang!

Blades and claws collided with a thunderous impact. They exchanged a rapid flurry of strikes, the constant clashing echoing incessantly through the passage.

The shockwaves from their confrontation exploded outward, instantly displacing the sewage in the tunnel and turning it into a sheet of spray.

Unnoticed, a white mist began to drift through the sewer.

Within the heavy fog, Pyramid Head's figure appeared behind the demon like a wraith. His massive Great Knife cleaved through the air, hacking violently toward one of the demon's lower arms.

Thud.

The arm fell into the water, green blood gushing out.

"Roar!!!"

The demon howled in pain and rage. It reacted with remarkable speed, throwing a heavy backhand punch at Pyramid Head, but the blow merely passed through Pyramid Head's shadow and struck the concrete wall.

Boom!

A massive crater was smashed into the wall, bursting the hidden water pipes within and sending high-pressure streams of water spraying everywhere.

Taking advantage of the demon's distraction, Sephirot joined the twin blades together. Holding the bow in his left hand and pulling the string with his right, he let the magic surge through his body and pour into the deer bow.

A magic arrow as thick as an infant's arm rapidly materialized on the string, gathering power.

The deep purple glow of the arrow flared brilliantly, illuminating the surroundings and reflecting off Sephirot's slightly pale face.

The moment the arrow reached full charge...

He released the string, and the arrow tore through the air!

The magic arrow carried a terrifying pressure, forcing the sewage on the ground to part to either side, carving a trail in its wake.

A second later, the arrow slammed into the demon's torso, blasting open a hideous, bloody hole.

The demon was knocked flat to the ground. It looked down at its wound; within the green-skinned muscle, numerous tiny tentacles sprouted, seemingly attempting to force the wound shut.

It stood up again, and just as it prepared to let out another roar to vent its fury...

Sephirot, using the arrow as cover, had already glided rapidly across the ground to close the distance.

Planting his foot against the wall to kick off, he vaulted into the air, pouring every remaining drop of magic in his body into the twin blades crossed before him. In mid-air, a deadly cross slash took form, hurtling toward the demon at extreme speed.

The man and the monster streaked past one another. Sephirot landed in a half-crouch on the ground, breathing slightly hard.

Behind him, the demon's body convulsed a few times. After a few rasping gasps, its form split apart, cleanly severed into four pieces.

Thick green blood stained the sewage of the sewer.

A system notification rang out in his mind, but Sephirot suppressed it, ignoring it for the time being.

He flicked the foul blood off his twin blades and looked at the mangled remains of the demon on the ground, reflecting privately.

In the end, it was just a mindless beast acting on instinct.

If they had been in an open field, it might have been able to use those unpredictable demonic powers to kite him and drag out the fight.

But in such an extremely narrow underground passage, its massive size became a liability, reducing it to nothing more than a passive living target.

Just as Sephirot prepared to put away his weapons and cast Myers's corpse and the demon's remains into Silent Hill together...

The sound of steady footsteps drifted slowly from the darkness at the other end of the tunnel.

Sephirot's expression tightened slightly.

The newcomer was pot-bellied and wore a brown police uniform.

It was the Sheriff who had intercepted their van at the entrance to the town earlier.

The Sheriff stopped ten paces away. A golden light shimmered within his pupils, and his entire body radiated a holy aura as he looked coldly at Sephirot.

"Hand over the body of that demon. Considering you didn't go looking for trouble, I can let you leave here alive."

The Sheriff's attitude was arrogant in the extreme, as if this were some grand mercy bestowed upon Sephirot.

Sephirot narrowed his eyes, planting a foot on Myers's corpse as he countered: "You knew all along that Myers was a vessel for a demon?"

"No, I wasn't certain."

The Sheriff remained expressionless. "There was no demonic scent on him; he bypassed our detection entirely. However, because of his frequent killings, the Council sent me to investigate the anomaly."

"I simply didn't expect these filthy bugs to hide so deeply."

"Now, hand it over. The Council of Angels will handle the cleanup of everything that follows."

"Humans, no… an outlier like you is unworthy of laying hands on such things."

"So, just because you couldn't detect a demonic scent, even if a psychopathic killer slaughtered the entire town, you angels wouldn't lift a finger?"

Sephirot asked, his tone mocking.

"The birth, aging, illness, and death of humans are all predetermined fate."

The angel's voice held no ripple of emotion. "We never interfere in the squabbles of ants."

"What's your name?"

Sephirot suddenly asked a strange question.

The angel paused briefly. He didn't understand why the outlier before him would ask such a pointless question.

He simply assumed the other man was afraid.

The angel tilted his chin up slightly and spoke loudly:

"I am the Seventh Order Enforcer under the Council of Angels, Augustus!"

"What a bullshit name. Never heard of it."

A red light flickered in Sephirot's eyes. He was some nameless nobody, and by the looks of it, he didn't have much backing either.

That made things easy.

An afterimage, barely perceptible to the naked eye, flashed across the Sheriff's body like a bolt of lightning.

Squeltch.

Blood sprayed instantly.

The Sheriff's limbs were severed at the root, blood geysering out.

Only then did this noble angel manage to react.

He looked with shock at the afterimage slowly dissipating where Sephirot had stood, instinctively turning his head to find Sephirot's true body.

With that movement, his torso separated from his limbs entirely. Losing his balance, he tumbled into the water.

Sephirot flicked his blades clean and walked over to him, looking down from above.

"So weak."

The angel did not scream for mercy like an ordinary person.

He struggled to lift his head, his golden eyes filled with humiliation and rage.

"You dare harm a noble angel?! The Council's wrath will burn you to ash! If you have the guts, kill me right now!"

Sephirot looked at him and scoffed. "I'm not going to kill you."

"If I kill this shell, your soul essence will simply return to Heaven."

"And then, you'll just come back to seek revenge."

Hearing this, the angel, his true intentions seen through, instantly froze, his golden pupils shrinking violently.
