Chapter 5 - The Echo Protocol

THE ECHO PROTOCOL

[LOCATION: OAKHAVEN – TRADE DISTRICT / THE GILDED COIN INN]

[TIME: 03:42 HOURS]

[STATUS: REVENGE PROTOCOL – ACTIVE]

The rain had turned from a drizzle into a torrential downpour, the kind of weather that drowned out footsteps and muffled the screams of the dying. Caicee Clearleaf didn't seek shelter. She sat on the gargoyle-crowned eaves of The Gilded Coin, her Dark Template infusion making her skin indistinguishable from the wet stone.

In her chest, the Sternum Needle pulsed with a rhythmic, violet throb. It was "pinging."

She knew the Company's Null-Stalkers were close. Their sensors were tuned to the specific psionic frequency of her deep-crystal battery. For two years, she had masked that signal using Nystul's Magic Aura, but tonight, she had intentionally dropped the mask.

She wasn't hiding anymore. She was broadcasting.

"Data confirmed," she whispered into the rain. "They're using the standard 144-kilohertz tracking loop. Arrogant. They haven't updated their source code in twenty-four months."

Below her, in the muddy street, three figures moved with a synchronized, mechanical gait. They wore the charcoal-grey combat skins of Echo Operatives—the failed Medusa-prototypes that had come after her. They lacked her photographic memory and her 24 Intelligence, but they shared a hive-mind link. If one saw her, they all saw her.

Beside her, Grimm (Noe-Whun) hissed, his frills vibrating. Through their Neural Sync, she felt his thermal hunger. He saw the heat of their hearts—artificial, magically sustained, and cold.

"Target identified," a flat, distorted voice echoed from below. "Medusa-01. Protocol: Defragmentation. Engage."

[PHASE 1: SENSORY SATURATION]

[CURRENT PP: 25/27]

Caicee didn't wait for them to reach the roof. She initiated Neural Sync (Fusion).

In a visceral blur of psychometabolism, her body and Grimm's merged. Her small Whisper Gnome frame shifted, bones clicking and reforming as she took on the Tiny Hybrid form. She gained the Death Monitor's Permanent Haste, his Regeneration, and his Venomous Spit.

"Grimm, let's show them the glitch in the system," she thought.

She manifested Augmented Compression.

The world expanded once more. She was no longer Tiny; she was Diminutive. A thirteen-inch predator with a Dexterity of 25 and an Armor Class of 34. To the Echo Operatives, she simply ceased to exist on their optical sensors.

She dropped from the eave like a falling needle.

[PHASE 2: THE KINETIC DELETION LOOP]

She landed on the shoulder of the lead Echo Operative. He was a human-sized construct of flesh and brass, his eyes glowing with a sickly green alchemical light. Before his hive-mind could register her presence, Caicee reached into her Mantis Silk Gloves.

The Singularity Katana appeared in her hand.

* Swift Action: Mental command. The blade fractured into two.

* Move Action: She glided across the operative's collarbone.

* Standard Action: Iaijutsu Focus combined with Decisive Strike.

Because of her Tashalatora training, she didn't just cut; she delivered a focused strike that carried the weight of her entire psionic mass. The katana's Aptitude enchantment allowed her to apply Shadow Blade damage—her +7 Dexterity modifier biting deep into the operative's neck assembly.

[DAMAGE CALCULATION: KINETIC STRIKE]

* Iaijutsu Damage: +5d6 (One Strike, Two Cuts)

* Sneak Attack: +3d6

* Shatter Strike: +3d6

* Base Damage: 1d8+1

The operative didn't scream. His head simply detached as the Shatter effect from her gloves disintegrated the brass rivets holding his neck together.

"One down," Caicee rasped. "Data scrubbed."

[PHASE 3: BLOODSTORM INTERDICTION]

The other two Echo Operatives reacted with hive-mind speed. They raised their heavy repeating crossbows, the bolts tipped with anti-psionic dampening toxin.

"Wait-State Analysis: Projectile Vectors," Caicee commanded her own mind.

Using Bloodstorm Blade maneuvers, she didn't retreat. She threw her twin katanas.

The blades didn't fly in a straight line. They curved through the rain, glowing with a faint violet aura. They hit the crossbow bolts in mid-air, slicing them in half before continuing their trajectory toward the operatives' throats.

It was the Blade Wind. The weapons bounced between the two remaining targets, a recursive loop of steel and shadow.

The second operative tried to engage a Shield spell, but Caicee was already Overclocking. She burnt 2 PP to manifest Guided Shot through her Lattice-Gem. The katana ignored the cover of the operative's shield, burying itself in his central processor.

The third operative, sensing the imminent total failure of the squad, attempted to trigger a "Self-Deconstruct" blast—a 30-foot radius of magical fire meant to erase the evidence.

"Not today," Caicee whispered.

She leaped. In her hybrid form, her Jump and Tumble checks were off the charts. She closed the distance in a hasted blur. She didn't use the sword. She used Grimm's Arrow of Bone.

The tail-stinger of her hybrid form whipped forward.

* Attack: +13 (Hybrid/Compression bonuses).

* Effect: Arrow of Bone (Save or Die).

The stinger pierced the operative's reinforced ocular lens. The Fortitude DC was 15. The operative's internal magic flickered, the self-destruct sequence dying in a hiss of corrupted code.

[POST-COMBAT ANALYSIS]

The alley was silent again, save for the patter of rain on the cooling brass of the operatives.

Caicee stood over the remains, her form shimmering as she returned to her baseline small size. She was breathing hard, the Sternum Needle burning with the heat of the Overclock. This was the cost of revenge—the physical strain of being better than her creators.

She looked at the third operative's head. It was still twitching, its hive-mind link trying to send one last packet of data back to the Cradle.

Caicee knelt. She reached out and touched the operative's forehead, her Lattice-Gem glowing. She wasn't just killing them; she was Hacking the link.

"Tell the Ministers," she said, her red and blue eyes reflecting the violet psionic light. "Tell them I remember the 11 million. Tell them I remember the names on the shareholder list. And tell them that every 'Echo' they send is just more data for me to scrape."

She withdrew her hand. The operative's eyes went dark.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a fresh holographic seed. She dropped it on the pile of deactivated assets. The Violet Ghost Lotus bloomed in the dark alley, a rotating flower of fractal shards that stood as a middle finger to the most powerful corporation in the world.

"Let's move, Grimm," she said, sheathing her blades. "We have a bank in the next province to liquidate. If they want their money back, they'll have to come and get it."

She vanished into the shadows, a ghost that the Company could no longer control.
