Chapter 16 - Chapter-15 : The First Monster Trap

The stairwell was quiet… too quiet.

I didn't like quiet. I really didn't like quiet.

"Alright, team," Sarah whispered, clutching the cube like it was a grenade, "we need a plan. We can't just run forever."

Kai nodded, already scanning the stairwell and measuring distances with his eyes. "If we can predict their approach and control the shadows with Mira's abilities, we can lure the monsters into a trap. Use the cube as bait, then isolate and freeze them temporarily."

Lara raised her eyebrows. "Sounds fancy. Translation: hit them, shout bad jokes, and hope for the best?"

Felix groaned. "I hate everything. Can I just hide under a desk again?"

Mira shook her head. "No. We work together. I can freeze the shadows for short bursts, but I need everyone coordinating. Every distraction counts."

We moved to the main hallway. I positioned myself near the cube, ready to signal Mira. Lara and Felix flanked the sides. Kai took a higher vantage point, analyzing angles, while Sarah was at the lead.

"Remember," Mira said, "timing is everything. As soon as the first wave appears, distract, attack, and guide it toward the cube. I'll handle the rest."

I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the shadows twitching in the corners.

Then we saw it—the faceless creature, along with smaller shadow figures, slinking toward us. Their movements were silent, deliberate.

"Now!" Mira shouted. Her hands glowed, pushing the first wave of shadows back, freezing them mid-lunge.

Lara stepped forward, swinging her chair like a knight in ridiculous armor. "Time for some stand-up combat!"

Felix screamed, "I'M HELPING!" and swung his broomstick at a shadow. It hissed and recoiled.

The cube pulsed, glowing brighter as Sarah held it aloft. The shadows converged toward it, drawn in like moths to a flame.

Kai barked directions. "Left flank! Keep them distracted! Lara, more jokes! Felix, cover the right side!"

Lara grinned. "Why don't monsters eat comedians? Because they taste funny!"

The shadows hesitated. I swear one actually tilted its head like it was confused.

Mira's glow intensified. "Almost… there…"

The cube activated fully, sending a wave of energy that pushed the shadows into a corner, freezing them temporarily.

The faceless creature shrieked, recoiling from the cube's power.

I couldn't believe it. We actually did it. The first trap worked.

Lara collapsed dramatically. "Victory! First trap set! Next: world domination. Or snacks. Probably snacks."

Felix groaned. "Can we skip world domination and go straight to therapy?"

Sarah exhaled sharply, clutching the cube. "This… will buy us time. But it won't last. We need a plan for the next wave… and for the faceless one."

Mira sank to her knees, exhausted but smiling faintly. "We're learning… and surviving. That counts for something."

I nodded, adrenaline still coursing through me. Somehow, we survived. Somehow, we even won a little.

But I knew Noorwood High wasn't done with us.

Not even close.
