Chapter 1 - Chapter One: The Bridge That Waited

The bridge had always been there, long before Aisha knew what it meant to wait. It stretched across the river like a quiet promise, its wooden planks weathered by time and monsoon rains, its lanterns swaying gently in the breeze. Children used to run across it laughing, lovers carved initials into its railings, and elders paused halfway to watch the water carry away their thoughts. But for Aisha, the bridge was a memory suspended in twilight — the place where Rehan had once stood beside her, fingers brushing hers, eyes full of dreams too big for their small town. He had left with the sunrise, chasing ambition, leaving behind the girl who had memorized the way his shadow fell across the planks. Years passed. The river changed course slightly, the lanterns were replaced, and the bridge grew quieter. Aisha stopped walking that way. She told herself it was just a path, just wood and nails and nostalgia. But every time she passed the edge of the river, her heart paused — as if waiting for something she couldn't name. Then one evening, as the sky turned gold and the stars began to blink awake, she saw him. Rehan. Standing at the far end of the bridge, older, quieter, and carrying the weight of choices that had fractured more than just hearts. He didn't wave. He didn't speak. He simply stood there, as if the bridge had called him back, as if the silence between them was the only language left. Aisha's breath caught. The distance between them was no longer measured in miles or years — it was measured in memories, in the ache of what could have been. And as the lanterns flickered and the river whispered below, she took a step forward. Not toward him, but toward the truth: that some bridges don't break. They wait.
