Chapter 6 - The Market Starts Falling

The news broke at 9:12 AM.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a quiet headline buried among financial updates—

"Orion Capital Withdraws Major Investment from Hayes Corporation"

At first—

No one paid attention.

By 9:30 AM—

Everyone did.

Screens across trading floors lit up.

Phones started ringing.

Analysts leaned forward.

Investors refreshed dashboards again and again.

Because something was happening.

Hayes Corporation stock dropped 3%… then 5%… then 8%.

"Why is it falling this fast?"

"Who else is pulling out?"

"Is there internal trouble?"

The questions spread faster than the numbers.

And no one had answers.

Inside Hayes Corporation—

The atmosphere was nothing like yesterday.

Gone was the confidence.

Gone was the control.

What remained—

Was tension.

"Get me updates every five minutes," Daniel Hayes said sharply, pacing across his office.

His tie was loosened.

His phone buzzed nonstop.

Calls.

Messages.

Alerts.

"Sir," his assistant said carefully, "two more minor investors have frozen their funds."

Daniel stopped walking.

"Frozen?"

"Yes, sir. They're waiting to see how the situation develops."

Of course they were.

Because in the corporate world—

Fear spreads faster than facts.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair.

"This is temporary," he said, more to himself than anyone else. "It'll stabilize."

It had to.

But even as he said it—

Another alert appeared on the screen.

-10%

The number hit harder than anything else.

"Damn it," he muttered.

Across the city—

Carter Holdings remained calm.

Too calm.

Emily Carter sat in her office, reviewing reports as if nothing unusual was happening.

Robert stood beside her, tablet in hand.

"Hayes Corporation stock is down 11%," he reported. "Media outlets are starting to pick up the story."

Emily didn't look up.

"Expected."

Robert glanced at her.

"You anticipated this level of reaction?"

Emily turned a page.

"The market doesn't react to truth," she said.

"It reacts to uncertainty."

She finally looked up.

"And right now… Daniel Hayes is uncertainty."

Robert nodded slowly.

That was exactly it.

"Shall we proceed with the next step?" he asked.

Emily leaned back slightly.

Her expression thoughtful.

Controlled.

"Not yet," she said.

Robert paused.

"Miss Carter?"

Emily stood.

Walked toward the window.

The city stretched endlessly below.

"If we push too hard too fast," she said, "he'll panic."

A pause.

"And desperate people… make unpredictable moves."

She turned.

Her gaze sharp.

"I want him controlled."

Not destroyed.

Not yet.

Controlled.

"Release the statement," she added.

Robert's brow furrowed slightly.

"What kind of statement?"

Emily's lips curved faintly.

"Reassurance."

By noon—

The second wave hit.

A press release from Carter Holdings.

"Carter Holdings Confirms Ongoing Evaluation of Strategic Partnerships"

Carefully worded.

Neutral.

Professional.

But between the lines—

Clear.

Nothing was guaranteed.

The market reacted instantly.

-14%

Inside Hayes Corporation—

The pressure exploded.

"Sir, the media is requesting comments."

"Sir, analysts are questioning our stability."

"Sir—"

"Enough!" Daniel snapped.

The room fell silent.

Daniel stood behind his desk, fists clenched.

This wasn't just business anymore.

This was control slipping through his fingers.

And the worst part?

He knew exactly who was doing it.

Emily.

"Get me a press statement," he said.

"Yes, sir."

"Something strong," he added. "Reassure investors. Stabilize the situation."

The assistant nodded quickly and rushed out.

Daniel turned to the window.

For the first time—

The city didn't look like his.

It looked like a battlefield.

And he was losing ground.

Across the city—

Emily watched the same skyline.

But from a different height.

A different position.

A different power.

"His response?" she asked.

Robert checked his tablet.

"He's preparing a public statement," he said. "Trying to stabilize confidence."

Emily nodded slightly.

"Good."

Robert hesitated.

"You don't seem concerned."

Emily glanced at him.

"I'm not."

A pause.

"Because this isn't about today's drop," she said.

Her voice lowered.

"It's about what comes next."

At 2:45 PM—

Daniel's press statement went live.

"Hayes Corporation remains financially strong and fully operational. Recent changes in investment structure are part of strategic adjustments…"

Confident.

Reassuring.

Controlled.

For a moment—

The market steadied.

-13%

Daniel exhaled slowly.

"See?" he muttered. "Handled."

But the relief didn't last.

Because five minutes later—

Another update hit.

Carter Holdings—Internal Review Expands to Additional Subsidiaries

The effect was immediate.

-16%

And this time—

It didn't slow down.

Back at Carter Holdings—

Robert looked up from his tablet.

"That wasn't part of the statement," he said.

Emily didn't respond.

Because she already knew.

The market—

Was doing the work for her.

Evening fell.

And with it—

Came the final numbers.

Hayes Corporation: -19%

Daniel sat alone in his office.

Lights dim.

Phone silent.

For once—

No calls.

No messages.

Just quiet.

And that silence—

Was worse than anything else.

Because it meant—

People were watching.

Waiting.

Deciding.

And he wasn't in control anymore.

Across the city—

Emily Carter closed her laptop.

The numbers didn't excite her.

They didn't satisfy her.

Because this—

Was only the first crack.

She stood.

Walked toward the window.

And for the first time—

She whispered something softly.

"Now…"

A pause.

"Let's see how long you last."
