Chapter 29 - The Hidden Player

Every game has rules.

Every war has sides.

Every battle has players.

But the most dangerous move—

Is the one you don't see.

Obsidian Tower.

The air had changed.

Not tense.

Not chaotic.

Uncertain.

Alexander Knight stood in the center of the room.

For the first time—

Still.

Not by choice.

But because something—

Didn't make sense.

"Trace it again," he said.

His voice calm.

But sharper than before.

His associate worked quickly.

Systems running.

Code unraveling.

Then—

Stopped.

"It's not external," he said quietly.

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"I know that," he replied.

A pause.

"I want to know who."

The screen flickered.

A name appeared.

And for the first time—

Alexander Knight froze.

Evelyn Cross.

Silence.

Because that name—

Was impossible.

"She's been dead for years," the associate whispered.

Alexander didn't respond.

Because he knew something others didn't.

"She was never dead," he said quietly.

Across the city—

Carter Holdings.

Emily Carter stood alone.

The chaos outside—

Still unfolding.

But her focus—

Was elsewhere.

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown sender.

She opened it.

One line.

"You always trusted the wrong people."

Her eyes sharpened instantly.

Because something about that message—

Felt familiar.

Hayes Corporation.

Daniel Hayes stood in the dark facility.

Something felt off.

Too quiet.

Too empty.

"This isn't right," one of his men said.

Daniel didn't respond.

Because he already knew.

They weren't walking into a trap.

They were already inside one.

A screen flickered on.

Suddenly.

And a voice filled the room.

Soft.

Calm.

Controlled.

"Daniel Hayes."

He turned instantly.

Because he recognized that tone.

Not the voice—

But the presence.

"Looking for someone?" the voice continued.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Show yourself," he said.

A pause.

Then—

The screen shifted.

And she appeared.

Evelyn Cross.

Alive.

Silence.

Because this—

Changed everything.

Across the city—

Alexander stared at the same image.

His expression—

No longer calm.

No longer controlled.

"You…"

His voice dropped.

Low.

"Impossible."

Evelyn smiled faintly.

"You always underestimate survival," she said.

Back in the facility—

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

"Who are you?" he asked.

Evelyn's gaze met his.

Direct.

Unshaken.

"I'm the reason this war exists," she said.

Silence.

Because that—

Was not an answer.

Across the city—

Emily's phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time—

A video.

She opened it.

And her breath—

Stopped.

Evelyn Cross.

Alive.

Emily's fingers tightened.

Because she remembered.

Not clearly.

But enough.

"You…" she whispered.

Back at Obsidian Tower—

Alexander's eyes darkened.

"You were supposed to be gone," he said.

Evelyn's smile didn't fade.

"I was," she replied.

A pause.

"Until I decided not to be."

Silence.

Because now—

The truth surfaced.

"You built everything," Alexander said slowly.

A pause.

"From behind the scenes."

Evelyn tilted her head slightly.

"Not everything," she said.

Her eyes shifted—

"To the parts that mattered."

Back in the facility—

Daniel's mind raced.

Because this—

Connected everything.

The leaks.

The chaos.

The escalation.

"You used us," he said.

Evelyn nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Silence.

Brutal.

Across the city—

Emily stood frozen.

Because now—

The war wasn't theirs anymore.

It never had been.

Evelyn's voice echoed across all screens.

"Three powerful players," she said.

A pause.

"Too predictable."

Her gaze sharpened.

"So I rewrote the game."

Alexander stepped forward.

"You think you can control this?" he asked.

Evelyn smiled.

"I already do."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What do you want?" he asked.

Evelyn's eyes met his.

Then shifted—

To the unseen audience.

"Everything," she said.

Silence.

Because now—

There were no doubts left.

This wasn't a war between three players.

It was a game—

Controlled by a fourth.

And she had been there—

From the beginning.

The screens went black.

Silence returned.

But nothing felt the same.

Across the city—

Three people stood still.

Daniel Hayes.

Emily Carter.

Alexander Knight.

All realizing—

The same thing.

They weren't the ones playing.

They were pieces.

And the real game—

Had just begun.
