Chapter 16 - What remains

Chapter 16:

The moment the truth left Ava's lips…

Everything changed.

The room felt cold.

Still.

Unstable.

Ethan stood frozen, the pencil still in his hand. 🖊️

"Ava…" he said quietly, "nothing's happening."

But she shook her head slowly.

"You don't understand," she whispered.

From the other room—

A loud crash echoed.

They both turned.

Ava's heart dropped.

"No…"

She ran.

Ethan followed.

In the kitchen, the table was empty.

The food… gone.

Completely gone.

Her mother stood there, confused.

"The food was just here," she said.

Ava's breathing became uneven.

"It's starting…"

Ethan looked around, panic rising.

"What do you mean starting?"

Ava turned to him, her voice trembling.

"Everything I created… it's going to disappear."

Silence.

As if the world itself had paused.

Then—

Her grandmother coughed.

Weakly.

More than before.

Ava rushed to her side.

"Grandma…?"

Her mother looked worried again.

"She was getting better…"

Ava closed her eyes tightly.

Tears slipped down her face.

"It wasn't real," she whispered.

Ethan stood still, the weight of it all crashing down on him.

The money vanished next.

Right in front of them.

Gone.

Her father lowered his head slowly.

The quiet strength he had found… fading again.

Everything Ava had built…

Everything she had fixed…

Was breaking.

And there was nothing she could do.

Ava turned back to the room.

To the pencil still in Ethan's hand. 🖊️

"Give it to me," she said softly.

He stepped forward and placed it in her hand.

For a moment…

She just stared at it.

The thing that gave her hope.

The thing that gave her power.

The thing that changed everything.

And now…

The thing that took it all away.

Her hands trembled.

"I thought I was helping," she whispered.

Ethan stepped closer.

"You were," he said quietly.

She shook her head.

"No… I was hiding."

Silence filled the space between them.

Ava took a deep breath.

Then slowly…

She placed the pencil on the table.

"I can't rely on this anymore," she said.

Ethan looked at her.

"What will you do now?"

Ava wiped her tears.

Her voice steadier now.

Stronger.

"I'll do it for real this time."

She looked around at her family.

At their struggle.

At their reality.

And for the first time…

She didn't look afraid.

"I'll work," she said.

"I'll try again."

"I won't stop."

Ethan nodded slowly.

"I'll help you."

Ava looked at him.

Surprised.

"You don't have to," she said.

"I know," he replied.

"But I want to."

A small silence passed.

Then Ava looked back at the pencil one last time. 🖊️

This time…

It looked ordinary.

Just a pencil.

Nothing more.

She turned away.

Outside, the city moved as it always had. 🌆

Loud.

Busy.

Real.

And this time…

Ava was ready for it.
