Chapter 105 - Message

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FIVE

### The Message From Mo Xuan

The message arrived the following morning.

Mo Xuan. Through Shen Bo's relay. Flagged urgent.

*The dead zone. The Shadow Sect's response to the spiritual condition change. I have been monitoring this since the combination. I did not send information earlier because my thirty years of the wrong work means my assessments of Shadow Sect behavior are — questioned by some in the coordination network.*

*But the information is accurate and it is now urgent.*

*The Shadow Sect's dead zone operation is not a territorial defense. It is a recovery operation.*

*The Shadow Sect's cultivation method requires inert spiritual territory. Their specific technique — the isolation and suppression method that produced the dead zone's conditions in the first place — is a cultivation approach that requires absence of competing spiritual frequency.*

*The combination did not just clear the primary corruption network. It disrupted the Shadow Sect's foundational cultivation environment.*

*They are not protecting territory. They are trying to suppress the new spiritual conditions before they propagate further into Shadow Sect operational areas.*

*If the growing season work continues and the seeded sections in the dead zone's outer range develop toward generation — the Shadow Sect's cultivation method becomes non-functional across their entire northern operational territory.*

*This is existential for them.*

*The forty-three agents last night were the beginning. They will escalate significantly.*

*I am sending this information to every relay station in the coordination network simultaneously. I am also sending it to Ice Sect's outer territory command and to Li Shan.*

*I should have sent this six months ago.*

*I did not because I was still finding my position in the new work. That hesitation cost six months. I am sorry for it.*

He read the message twice.

Then he read it to Shen Hua.

She received it with the quality she received everything — complete attention, immediate integration.

"Existential," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The growing season work threatens the Shadow Sect's fundamental cultivation environment," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Which means every seeded section in the dead zone's outer range is a direct threat to their operational capability," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the three seeded sections in the dead zone's southern approach that Li Shan's cascade data had confirmed.

"We cannot accelerate those sections," she said. "Not safely. Not with Shadow Sect responding at this level."

"No," he said.

"But we cannot abandon them either," she said. "If the sections do not develop — if we stop the growing season work in the dead zone fringe — the Shadow Sect achieves their objective without having to escalate further."

"Yes," he said.

He looked at the formation site. At the nine standing stones. At the platform.

Three centuries of practice.

He thought about what River-Stone had built and why.

The combination required a formation. The formation required protection. The protection required people willing to maintain the site across the generations between combination events.

The growing season sections required the same thing.

People willing to maintain the site across the time it took for the sections to develop past the Shadow Sect's ability to suppress.

"The practitioners," he said. "The ones in the dead zone fringe settlements. The four farming communities Shen Hua documented."

"Yes," she said.

"They are already practicing," he said. "Shen Hua's documentation shows two of them have been providing baseline frequency input to the seeded sections for months."

"Yes," she said.

"They need to know what they are doing," he said. "Not generally. Specifically. What is developing in their land and why the Shadow Sect is coming and what maintaining their practice produces even when the Shadow Sect is coming."

"You want to tell farming communities that their morning exercises are in direct conflict with one of the realm's most dangerous cultivation organizations," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at him.

"They will want to stop," she said.

"Some of them," he said. "Some will not."

"How do you know," she said.

He thought about Raohe. The elder who had kept doing the morning exercises for forty years. The farming patriarch whose harvesting sequence had been building for four generations. The sixteen-year-old writing to the school teacher. Wang Fei holding the perimeter alone for two hours.

"Some people," he said, "when they understand what the work is, do not want to stop doing it."

Shen Hua looked at him for a long moment.

"We tell them," she said.

"We tell them," he agreed.

He sent the message to Shen Bo.

Tell the four dead zone fringe settlements what is happening. All of it. The seeded sections. The growing season work. The Shadow Sect response. What their practices are doing and what maintaining them means and what the choice is.

All of it.

Let them choose.
