## CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY

### The Third Practitioner

The message arrived at the second hour of the night.

Not through the coordination network relay. Not through Mo Xuan's channel. Directly to the hub's primary relay station.

One line.

*I have been here for three weeks. The section knows me. I do not know what I am supposed to do next.*

No name. The relay sender identification showed a location in the dead zone fringe's western section.

The third practitioner.

Jian Yu read it at the morning fire.

He showed it to the group.

Bing Xi read it twice.

"He has been in a seeded section for three weeks," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"Alone," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"He said the section knows him," she said. "Not that he knows the section. The section knows him."

He looked at the message.

She was right. The phrasing was specific.

"The section has been receiving him," he said. "Three weeks of his practice in the section's territory. The section's pathways have oriented toward him." He paused. "He feels the orientation and he does not have vocabulary for what it is."

"Before the words," Bing Xi said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

He held the message.

He thought about what to send back.

He thought about what he would have wanted to receive in that valley outside Eagle Sect's gate. When the sword had found him and he had not known what it meant.

He had said: okay but I need you to explain this.

The sword had not explained.

It had hummed.

He did not hum.

He wrote:

*The section knows you because you have been practicing in it for three weeks. The pathways have oriented toward your cultivation frequency. This is what the archive calls development acceleration — the section building faster because of consistent proximity to a practitioner.*

*You do not need to know what to do next. You are already doing it.*

*The section knows you. That is sufficient.*

*Stay.*

He sent it.

He looked at the fire.

"Stay," Feng Luo said. He had read over Jian Yu's shoulder.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"You told him to stay," Feng Luo said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"The same as River-Stone," Feng Luo said. "The same as the spring community's founder. The same as Dao Ru at the watchtower."

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"It is always the same instruction," Feng Luo said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

The response came back an hour later.

Not one line this time.

*The organization withdrew. The option three debate is still happening. I did not follow the withdrawal because I did not understand what I was withdrawing from or toward. I did not follow the faction because the technique failed and I could not find a reason to repeat what had already failed.*

*I found the section because it was the only place in the fringe territory that did not feel like the dead zone.*

*I did not know what that meant. I practiced there anyway.*

*I am staying.*

He read the message.

He sent it to Mo Xuan.

Mo Xuan's response: *He is doing what I should have done thirty years ago. Found the place that did not feel like what he was used to and practiced there anyway.*

*Send him the Before The Words section.*

*And tell him: the section knowing him is the beginning. Not the end.*

Jian Yu sent it.

He looked at the fire.

At the hub around them.

At the generating field twelve li west that Shen Bo's wife had visited twice a year for thirty years.

"The beginning," he said.

Not to the group.

To himself.

To the third practitioner alone in a fringe section in the dead zone discovering that staying was enough to start.

He committed.

He did not count.

The fire was the fire.

The morning was the morning.

The work was the work.
