Chapter 145 - The Lineage

## CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE

### The Lineage

Li Shan's message arrived three days later.

He had been at the formation site when it happened. Not the Ice Sect upper approach valley — Jian Yu was five days east of Dusthaven. Li Shan was at the formation site maintaining the Sword Rain watch.

The message said:

*A cultivator arrived at the formation site this morning.*

*She is sixty-one. She said her name is Wei Lan. She said she practices a technique inherited from her teacher, who inherited it from their teacher, who inherited it from their teacher's teacher's teacher.*

*She said the lineage goes back further than she can trace.*

*She asked if the formation site was what she thought it was.*

*I asked her what she thought it was.*

*She said: the place where the practice began.*

*I asked what practice.*

*She showed me.*

*It is River-Stone's sequence.*

*Not fragments. Not a partial reconstruction. The full sequence. Including the direct pathway technique. Including the specific calibration for the formation site's pathway geometry.*

*She has been carrying the complete sequence.*

*Her lineage never broke.*

He read the message.

He read it again.

He sat down.

He was on the road east of Dusthaven. He sat down on the road and read the message a third time.

Lin Mei was beside him.

"Tell me," she said.

He read it to her.

She was quiet.

"The transmission did not break," she said.

"No," he said.

"We thought the clearing practitioners at the formation site had the highest fragment match," she said. "Seventy-three percent. We thought that was as close as we could get."

"Yes," he said.

"And the reconstruction was at ninety-six percent," she said. "Four percent fragments still missing."

"Yes," he said.

"Wei Lan has the full sequence," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The four percent we could not find," she said. "In a lineage that never broke. That has been carrying the complete sequence without knowing what it was connected to."

He held the message.

He thought about the sixteen-year-old finding one fragment no other source had.

He thought about the Flowing Hand school's practitioners independently arriving at pieces of River-Stone's original through decades of practice.

He thought about the transmission scattering into fragments across the realm and each fragment being maintained by practitioners who did not know they were maintaining a fragment.

And now.

The complete sequence.

Intact.

In one lineage.

Never broken.

"She asked if the formation site was what she thought it was," he said.

"Yes," Lin Mei said.

"She has been traveling to find out," he said.

"How long," Lin Mei said.

He sent to Li Shan: *How long has Wei Lan been traveling to reach the formation site.*

Li Shan's response: *She said three months. She felt the second combination's frequency in the land eight months ago and recognized it as the practice's specific signal. She has been moving toward the source since.*

*Before the words,* Li Shan added. *She felt the combination's frequency and recognized it before she had vocabulary for what she was recognizing.*

He read that.

He stood up.

He was still on the road east but he was already calculating the return route to the formation site.

"She needs to be in the archive," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," he said.

"Not just her sequence," Lin Mei said. "Her lineage. The transmission that never broke. Every practitioner in her lineage who carried the full sequence without knowing what it was."

"Yes," he said.

"Li Shan," she said.

"Yes," he said.

He sent: *Wei Lan and her lineage. The complete sequence. The transmission that never broke. Full documentation. What Was Here Before — primary entry. Above River-Stone if necessary.*

Li Shan's response came back in twenty seconds.

The fastest he had ever responded.

*Above River-Stone? No.*

*Alongside River-Stone.*

*Wei Lan's lineage IS River-Stone's transmission. They are the same entry. River-Stone began it. Wei Lan's lineage carried it.*

*The transmission never broke.*

*It was just separated from the place it began.*

*It has come home.*

He read the message.

He looked at the road.

He looked at Lin Mei.

She was already writing.

He turned west.

"We go back," he said.

"Yes," she said.

"The formation site," he said.

"Yes," she said.

She was writing while she turned.

He committed.

He walked west.

The domain extended around him.

Wei Lan at the formation site with the complete sequence intact.

The transmission home.
