Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 - "The smell"

'Ah, curse him! That idiot and his weirdly erotic mustache. I should have known that buffoons who offer deals like that—wanting so little in return shouldn't be trusted!'

He took another step forward through a mud-like substance composed of the various excrements of humans and other demi-human species.

'Dammit all.'

Finding himself in this situation really was the worst. Being framed and beheaded wasn't even the most grueling part of this ordeal.

'I was just supposed to do another quick job for a coin or two, then leave this godforsaken city with that band of idiots and never set foot here again! Instead, this disguise is ruined, and my face is plastered on the journals as the one who killed that vile witch! And to make matters worse, after dying, which hurt like hell, I find myself escaping through the sewers.'

Finally reaching what looked like an exit, guided by the warmth of the sun reaching his body, he jumped into the sea. He was careful to avoid the jagged rocks and the coral-like monsters that lived there, swimming until he reached a wooden ladder. He climbed carefully, but just before he reached the top, he heard two voices.

"Man, I still can't believe it. A mercenary nobody killed the Observer!"

"Yeah, she always had a weak constitution, but to think someone managed to not only evade her stone constructs but also disguise himself as one of her most trusted servants to bypass the magical destruction field."

"But that's not even the most shocking part. Apparently, the imperial guards who went to check on her found the man who killed her... eating her heart! Can you believe it?"

"It's a good thing they executed him in the plaza immediately after capturing him. What do we even know about this ghoul anyway?"

"Not much. Apparently, he was just some guy. All the information they dug up makes him look pretty average, for a mercenary, I mean. The only thing that sticks out is that he had a really rare ability to alter his facial muscles."

"Ugh, gross."

"Yeah. The only other info is that he was from the slums and joined the Pazzini in his teens like many other poor fellows. He disappeared from the city for over a year and then returned to join the Pazzini's activities again a few months ago. Those vile mercenaries held a lot of grudges against her; her constructs patrolling the capital made their illegal side activities nearly impossible. They were getting so frustrated their leader had to step in and change their management just to keep their headquarters from going bankrupt."

While the two passersby talked, a disgusting mass of living flesh began sprouting from the headless neck of the man waiting patiently on the ladder. This lump of flesh he had inhabited for the past five months had reached its usefulness. Sure he could grow another head and alter his stature, voice, and bones to look like someone else, but he had to abandon this corpse. In his attempt to improve his magical affinity by eating the witch's heart, he had been cursed by the spirits of the forest.

It wasn't a fact known to the public but apparently th observer wasn't some lady from a prestigius family with high affinity to magic, but she was a descendent of a high Duram. Probably she wasn't a direct heir but still, she had awakened that part of her blood even if it was greatly diluted by many generations passing since tha first contact with the deity

It wasn't public knowledge, but the Observer wasn't just some lady from a prestigious family with a high affinity for magic, she was a descendant of a Duram. She likely wasn't a direct heir, but she had awakened that ancient magical filled blood, even if it was greatly diluted by generations.

The curse placed on this vessel made it so nature itself rejected him. He was already experiencing the first signs: the wind was growing violent and the sea waves were rising higher every second, both trying to force him to fall and drown.

He felt some regret for the two innocent gossiping guards, but he had to change hearts.

"Ah, such a waste of a lump of flesh. After all the work I put into this vessel..."

But life was hard, and he knew it. Sometimes, you simply had to have a "change of heart" to keep living.
