Chapter 270: A Body of Balanced Power
It was difficult to describe what he was actually looking at.
Small. No hair, no eyebrows, skin that had the rumpled, compressed look of something that had not quite finished arriving. Lying face-up, both hands slightly open at the sides, fingers curled inward in the approximate shape of fists.
In the first moment of seeing it, Matsushita Yusuke's reaction was, if he was being completely honest, mild disappointment.
This doesn't look anything like I expected. It looks like a small alien.
But the reaction passed quickly.
Newborns came into the world in an unfinished state. That was simply the nature of the thing. Nothing had grown in yet. Of course it looked like this.
Matsushita Yusuke rubbed his chin, exhaled quietly, and stepped closer.
From the angle he was approaching, the eyes showed no sign of opening. What he could confirm, watching the small chest rise and fall in its slow rhythm, was that his guess had been right.
Still asleep.
Which made complete sense. A newborn's window for being awake and responsive in any given day was genuinely short. The rest of the time was this.
After sitting with that observation for a moment, Matsushita Yusuke blinked, and carefully extended his right hand.
His movement was deliberate and slow -- the kind of careful that came from not wanting to startle something fragile -- and with the particular lightness of someone trying not to be noticed, he brought his fingertips to rest gently against the baby's forehead.
In practice: not particularly soft. There was a slight roughness to the skin that he hadn't anticipated.
But the moment contact was confirmed, a quiet, wondering smile settled onto his face.
Nice to meet you, Ichigo.
The protagonist of this entire story. The absolute center of attention across three worlds. The hero who had been destined for strength from the moment of his birth had now, in a very literal sense, arrived in the world.
Matsushita Yusuke had been living in Soul Society for over a hundred years. He had, on some level, grown accustomed to the rhythms and culture of the place, the way long exposure to anything eventually became familiar. But standing here now, confirming with his own eyes that the child of fate actually existed -- his feelings were something else entirely.
It finally felt real.
The story was about to start.
Time was running short.
Of course, if the sole purpose of the trip had been to stand here feeling moved, that wasn't worth the effort of coming all this way.
He had, technically, contributed a non-trivial amount of effort to making this particular baby exist. Isshin and Masaki probably owed him a thank-you, if anyone was keeping track.
But that wasn't what he was here for. What he had actually come to confirm was something else.
Ichigo. Let me take a look at how you're put together.
Matsushita Yusuke half-closed his eyes and extended his reiatsu with careful precision, using it as a kind of sense organ, beginning to probe the state of the body in front of him.
As a technique, this wasn't complex. It was standard procedure in Soul Society -- the fundamental preliminary step before any healing Kido could be applied. Probe the condition, read the body, understand the situation before acting.
The reason he was doing it now was simple.
He wanted to understand Ichigo's actual state.
And beyond that, he wanted to experience firsthand, at the closest possible distance, where exactly that unparalleled aptitude actually lived. What it looked like from the inside.
Reading about it in the original story was one thing. Having crossed into this world himself, the question of what made Ichigo Kurosaki what he was had taken on a completely different weight.
Merging Shinigami and Hollow power was already extremely difficult. Weaving Quincy power into the same framework on top of that --
How does something this small actually manage it?
Even with the System's help, reaching that level of integration was going to require Matsushita Yusuke to climb to a specific threshold before any of it became possible. There was a distance to cover first.
In comparison, this kid came into existence with all three panels effectively starting at the maximum. Across all three disciplines. At once.
The sheer unfairness of it was almost funny.
What Matsushita Yusuke and Aizen were working and maneuvering and grinding toward with everything they had -- for Ichigo Kurosaki, that was simply the starting position.
He also had to admit: he was curious.
He couldn't do it himself yet. Which was exactly why having a concrete example to study was valuable. A reference point. Something to work toward.
He had thought this through carefully before leaving. Because Ichigo was the central figure of this entire world, a specific arrangement made by the Soul King himself. Getting involved with him casually carried the theoretical risk of setting off some unpredictable chain of consequences.
But he had set that concern aside in the end.
If the Soul King actually had intentions here, then those eyes that saw through all three worlds would already know exactly what Matsushita Yusuke was thinking.
I'm not here to cause any trouble.
I'm here to learn from him. Genuinely. You can't honestly expect me to come all this way and not even look.
And the practical results confirmed there was no issue. The Royal Guard hadn't appeared. Nothing had stopped him.
Then, however, something shifted in a direction he hadn't expected.
The moment his probing reiatsu reached its target, his brow pulled together with visible sharpness.
Without any apparent cause, he felt a strong resistance pushing back.
What is that?
The thought had barely formed when his eyebrow went up on its own.
Something was following the path of his extended reiatsu back toward him, the way a current follows a channel, pushing against him in a motion that had the character of a counterattack.
It was an enormous quantity of some strange energy, churning toward him in force. He wanted to understand it better, but given how fragile the body it was coming from was, Matsushita Yusuke pulled back quickly and stepped away, creating distance.
The residual trace of his own reiatsu remained in the air between them, hanging there like a set of invisible tracks, and it became exactly the path that force used to chase him.
Then he saw it.
The outline of what was pouring out of Ichigo's body.
Dark turbulence. Black-edged and chaotic. Multiple incompatible energies tangled together, twisting around each other, surging toward him in a single uncoordinated mass.
Something this small, and it's already throwing punches?
No. That reading was wrong.
Thinking about Ichigo's character from the original story, this kid did not know how to hold anything back. Subtlety was not in his vocabulary. And beyond that, he was currently unconscious. Killing someone in a dream without knowing about it was not a technique that fit his profile.
Also.
The shape of this energy was strange. There was something about it that kept triggering a sense of familiarity he couldn't quite place.
He stood there for a moment with a slightly uncertain expression, as though his first instinct had abandoned him and the correct read was arriving a few seconds late.
Then he raised his right hand and held it out in front of him.
Reiatsu flowed out, invisible, pressing itself close to the surface of his body in a tight, controlled layer.
This was something he had worked out during practice sessions with Aizen: compressed reiatsu, held close rather than allowed to expand, produced exactly this kind of dense, form-fitting barrier. All the energy kept adjacent, no outward leakage, maintaining full output without broadcasting it. Pure offense and defense occupying the same space at once.
The approach had also drawn on Blut as a conceptual reference point.
The surge from Ichigo's body hit it head-on.
The two forces collided without sound, and in the moment of contact they began a close, intense process of pushing against each other -- each grinding against the other, neither giving way immediately.
Inside that close-range collision, Matsushita Yusuke read the energy pressing against him with careful attention.
His eyebrow rose. He leaned back slightly in a slow, controlled movement.
And in that instant, he caught the impression he had been reaching for.
There it is.
"If I didn't already know what I was dealing with, this would probably have scared me pretty badly."
His right hand turned over as the thought finished, and he made a reaching, closing motion toward the energy in front of him.
A portion of the turbulence broke off and settled into his palm. He lifted it, brought it close, and examined it carefully.
The expression that settled onto his face had something genuinely astonished in it.
"A complete fragment of Shinigami reiatsu, solidified and intact. That's remarkable."
What had been a theoretical prediction before was now something he was holding.
For an ordinary Shinigami, producing this specific form of condensed reiatsu took considerable effort and refinement on its own. This piece existed as a natural byproduct, inside a newborn, without any deliberate work behind it.
And when he compared the quality and density of it against his internal benchmarks, what he found was more surprising still.
The quality was high.
Approaching --
No. It had already reached the threshold for captain-level output.
Which raised an immediate question.
Matsushita Yusuke looked over at Ichigo with a thoughtful expression.
A baby this size producing captain-level reiatsu on its own? That was impossible. Which meant this was not his own power in any simple sense.
He made a small, deliberate closing motion with his hand.
The fragment in his palm compressed and broke apart, and what drifted out of it passed across his field of perception and gave his already thoughtful expression a new quality.
What he was reading from those fragments was unmistakably Isshin's signature.
There had been room for interpretation before. Right now, there was none. The certainty was absolute.
Once he understood that, the look he directed at Ichigo shifted slightly -- something knowing settling into it.
Isshin would not have deliberately injected his own reiatsu into a child. There was no version of that choice that made sense as an intentional act.
So if it hadn't been deliberate, how had the result come about?
The question circled without resolution for a moment. An ordinary person might not have found the thread. But Matsushita Yusuke had read the original story, and had been more personally involved in this specific project than almost anyone.
The answer wasn't hard to reach.
Inherited through the mother.
He said the words quietly to himself, and the look he turned on Ichigo became something considerably more complex.
He had been in a rainy night years ago and witnessed what had happened. To keep Masaki alive, Isshin had needed to push Shinigami power into her body as a counterbalance -- holding the three-way tension in place, maintaining the equilibrium that kept her living.
The method, even now, struck him as improbably crude. Something that should not have worked.
But it had. Masaki had survived, and then had given birth normally.
And the cost?
Isshin had to wear a human shell to keep functioning, with regular reinjections of Shinigami energy to maintain the balance. Because the bull-head's power inside Masaki had never dispersed. Three forces, permanently in tension, requiring constant equilibrium to sustain her life.
That perpetual standoff had become Ichigo Kurosaki's inheritance.
His gaze drifted down. In Ichigo's body, alongside the fragment of Shinigami power that had just pushed back against him, three distinct interwoven clusters of light were visible to his extended perception, lying close together at the surface.
Shinigami. Quincy. Hollow.
The sources of each were clear enough.
Isshin. Masaki. The bull-head.
Matsushita Yusuke thought he finally understood, standing here now.
Ichigo had received three completely distinct power systems through his mother's body. Any one of those powers at full strength, forced into an ordinary human frame without preparation, would have been fatal immediately. The kind of thing that ended in rupture and death.
But having passed through Masaki first -- filtered, balanced, moderated -- the three forces sitting inside Ichigo now were gentler than they should have been.
Given these three as a foundation, even without any conscious awareness on his part, he would eventually learn to hold and use them simply through the accumulated experience of carrying them.
Matsushita Yusuke could feel it already: even the Hollow power, the portion that traced back to the bull-head, was currently in a purely defensive posture. Not attacking. Protecting.
Without question. It was protecting this child.
Having separated from Masaki's body, had it formed a dependency on the new host?
That was genuinely worth studying, if the opportunity ever arose. It wasn't available right now, so he filed it as a passing observation.
As for the three twisted clusters of light pressing against his extended field --
Matsushita Yusuke stepped back, raised both hands, and said with a quiet smile:
"My apologies. No bad intentions here. I'm leaving now."
The process had gone differently than anticipated.
But the result, without question, had been exactly what he came for.
Because Matsushita Yusuke had found, in the most concrete way possible, the answer he had been looking for.
