Chapter 2 - chapter 2: blood awakening

The pain refused to stop.

It spread.

From his chest, through his veins, into every corner of his body. It felt like his body was being torn apart and rebuilt at the same time—like something inside him was forcing a new structure into place.

He couldn't tell if he was dying…

Or evolving.

A low growl echoed behind him.

The creature was still there.

Waiting.

Watching.

His breathing turned uneven.

So this is where it ends…

The thought barely formed before—

"Pathetic."

The voice struck his mind like a command.

His eyes snapped open.

Everything froze.

The wind, the dust, even the faint movement of the creature—stopped completely. It was as if the world had been suspended in place.

Before him stood a figure.

Not fully visible. Not fully real.

A shadow with burning red eyes that seemed to look directly into his soul.

"You're dying," it said calmly.

"But I can change that."

His throat tightened.

"…Who are you…?"

Silence.

Then—

"The one who will remake you."

Pain erupted instantly.

Not from the outside—but from within. Like his body, his blood, even his existence itself was being forcibly rewritten.

His heart jolted.

Then slowed.

Then steadied into something unnatural.

"Accept it."

There was no explanation.

No choice that felt real.

Only pressure.

For a brief moment, hesitation flickered in him.

Then—

He accepted.

Something inside him shattered.

A surge of crimson energy exploded outward, shaking the ground beneath him.

His heartbeat changed.

THUD.

THUD.

THUD.

Louder.

Heavier.

Not human.

The creature moved.

It lunged.

Fast.

But his body reacted first.

Instinct overtook thought.

"Focus," the voice said.

Heat surged through his veins. A faint red glow pulsed beneath his skin as something inside him awakened—responding to his intent.

His muscles tightened violently, as if pushed beyond their natural limit.

The world slowed.

Not physically.

Perceptually.

The creature's claw descended.

He raised his hand.

And caught it.

Bare.

The impact cracked the ground beneath him, sending debris outward in a shockwave.

The creature paused.

For the first time.

"…weak," he muttered.

The word didn't feel like his own.

Something inside him moved.

Energy gathered through his arm—focused, condensed, unstable.

And then—

He struck.

No wasted motion.

No hesitation.

Just release.

The creature's body collapsed instantly, as if the force had erased its structure entirely.

Silence returned.

For a moment… nothing moved.

Then—

CRACK.

Pain detonated through his arm.

His body dropped to his knees as a violent backlash tore through him. His muscles spasmed. His vision blurred.

"What… is happening…?"

The voice returned immediately.

"Backlash."

His veins darkened, pulsing beneath his skin like unstable fire.

"You forced your body beyond its limit. Power always demands a price."

His heartbeat destabilized.

Too fast.

Then too slow.

Then irregular.

"I… can't control it…"

"This is the nature of Blood Awakening."

Darkness crept into his vision.

But something else followed.

Not pain.

Not fear.

Hunger.

A deep, unnatural pull shifted his focus toward the fallen creature.

His body reacted before his mind could stop it.

"…no…"

He stopped himself mid-motion.

His hand trembled in the air.

For a moment, he fought it.

Not the pain.

Not the fear.

Something deeper.

Then slowly…

The urge faded.

Not gone.

Contained.

Barely.

His body collapsed fully to the ground.

Breathing uneven.

Exhausted.

Still alive.

"…what am I…"

The voice lingered.

"Incomplete."

A pause.

Then—

"Feed… or your body will reject the awakening."

His gaze drifted toward the creature once more.

Then away.

Silence stretched.

And in that silence, one truth settled in:

This power didn't just change what he could do.

It was changing what he was.
