Chapter 2 - the logic of fortune

The bell above the lottery booth door chimed, a lonely sound that cut through the rhythmic drumming of the rain. Inside, the air smelled of stale tobacco and cheap fluorescent lighting.

"One ticket for the MegaBall. Manual entry," Leon said, his voice steadier than he felt.

The clerk, a man whose skin looked like crumpled parchment, didn't even look up. "Numbers?"

Leon stared at the blue holographic box floating above the counter. The digits were burned into his vision: 14, 22, 31, 44, 59, and the Powerball 10.

"14... 22... 31..." As he recited them, he felt a strange resonance in his left eye, as if the System was confirming each choice with a silent pulse of energy.

He handed over his last two dollars. The transaction felt monumental. To the world, he was just another desperate soul chasing a dream. To the System, he was making his first calculated move.

"Good luck, kid. You'll need it," the clerk grunted, sliding the slip of paper across the scratched plexiglass.

Leon stepped back into the rain, clutching the ticket like it was made of glass. He didn't head home. He couldn't. His apartment was a reminder of everything he was losing. Instead, he walked toward a high-end electronics store a few blocks away, a place he usually only visited to daydream.

As he walked, he practiced focusing his vision. He looked at a luxury SUV parked at the curb.

[VEHICLE: 2026 RANGE ROVER]

* Status: Stolen (99% Probability)

* Original Owner: Dr. Aris Thorne

* Reward for Recovery: $5,000

Leon stopped in his tracks. His breath hitched. It wasn't just about stocks or lotteries. The System saw everything—crimes, rewards, hidden truths. He could call the police, but who would believe a rain-soaked man with no job?

"Fine," Leon whispered. "One step at a time."

He reached the electronics store just as the evening news began playing on the massive display screens in the window. A crowd had gathered, huddled under umbrellas. The MegaBall drawing was live.

Leon's heart hammered against his ribs. He pulled out his ticket.

On the screen, the plastic balls tumbled in their glass cage. One by one, they were sucked into the tube.

14... 22... 31...

The crowd gasped. A man next to Leon cursed, crumpling his own ticket.

44... 59...

The tension in the air was thick enough to taste. Leon didn't blink. He already knew.

And the Powerball is... 10!

"Someone actually won," a woman shouted. "The jackpot is sixty million!"

Leon looked down at his ticket. Every number matched. He felt a surge of cold, pure adrenaline. He wasn't just rich; he was dangerous.

Suddenly, his vision blurred again. The blue interface expanded, covering the entire street.

But before he could celebrate, a familiar face stepped out of the crowd. It was Marcus, the senior analyst from Blackwood Capital who had spent two years taking credit for Leon's work. Marcus looked at Leon's wet clothes and smirked.

"Still hanging around the high-rent districts, Leon? I thought I told you to find a job at a gas station." Marcus laughed, gesturing to his polished shoes. "The rain is for losers. Get a move on before I call security."

Leon looked at Marcus. The blue box appeared above the analyst's head, but it was different now. Red text began to bleed into the blue.

Leon didn't get angry. Instead, a slow, predatory smile spread across his face. He tucked the winning ticket safely into his inner pocket.

"You're right, Marcus. The rain is for losers," Leon said, his voice dripping with a newfound confidence that made Marcus's smile falter. "By this time tomorrow, you're going to wish you were standing out here with me."

Marcus scoffed, but for the first time, he looked uncertain. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

Leon didn't answer. He turned and walked into the darkness, leaving the light of the screens behind. He didn't need the jackpot to destroy Marcus. He just needed to know where to look.
