Chapter 17 - Getting the Basic Certificate

After the waiting time had passed.

The ability possession test, including the blood test, was over quickly.

This was because the tester's mana activity could be checked immediately through a machine that looked similar to an MRI.

Occasionally, there were cases where the mana activity was too low even though the person had awakened, but in those cases, it was said that most could be accurately tested by taking a few special drugs.

It was a story that had little to do with Han Yu-jin, though.

But…

After all the tests were over, he had to wait for a strangely long time.

He couldn't help but think to himself as he watched people who had been tested later than him go into a counseling room-like space first.

'My test results don't seem to be ordinary.'

In fact, he had roughly guessed it from the moment he learned about the testing method.

The mana activity check meant checking to what extent the body had been affected by mana.

And he had diligently trained his body and soul with a very excellent method called the Origin Reversion Art in a primeval forest where the Spiritual Energy was nearly ten times richer than here.

It didn't seem like the mana scanner could grasp the state of a soul that had been partially sublimated into a Dharma Soul.

However, since the body and soul were not separate, he could roughly guess how outstanding his body would be compared to those who had just awakened.

'Won't there be at least a tenfold difference?'

After he had been thinking for a moment.

"Han Yu-jin-nim?"

The employee from the counter, who had disappeared inside for a moment, approached him directly and spoke.

"Yes?"

"You've been waiting a long time, haven't you? This way, please."

The unusually kinder attitude was apparently not a misunderstanding.

As he followed the employee and opened the door to a space that looked like a counseling room inside, he saw a total of three people: two men who looked to be in their mid-to-late forties and one man who looked to be in his mid-to-late thirties.

"Nice to meet you."

"Yes, nice to meet you."

The other side kindly offered a greeting first, so Han Yu-jin also returned the greeting and sat down as guided.

As the employee went outside, he inadvertently looked at the ID necklace worn by the youngest-looking man in his mid-to-late thirties.

'Ability Management Bureau Administrative Officer, Oh Tae-min.'

He was an official belonging to the government agency also known as the Hunter Management Bureau.

'What grade of public official is an administrative officer?'

As he was thinking, the man in his forties sitting in the middle operated the computer and displayed the test result sheet on the monitor screen.

It was a screen positioned to the side of everyone, so that even Han Yu-jin, sitting on the opposite side of the desk, could see it comfortably.

"First of all, congratulations on your ability awakening."

"Yes, thank you."

"Shall we take a look at the blood test results first?"

After that, a rough explanation from the man, who was clearly a doctor as he was the only one in a gown, followed.

It was a story that all the physical information that could be known from the blood test, such as liver function, cholesterol levels, kidney function, blood sugar levels, and thyroid hormone levels, was healthy.

"That's it for the blood test results… If you look here, this is the mana activity level."

The number he emphasized with the mouse pointer as he explained was 2,477. But the number listed next to it as the average level was only 80.

"Han Yu-jin-nim's mana activity is more than thirty times higher than the average. This is really… even a veteran active-duty Hunter would have a hard time getting a number this high. Are you really sure you awakened a few days ago?"

"Yes."

"And you don't have any particular pain or anything like that?"

"No, I don't."

It seemed they were wondering if it might be some new type of ability-related disease.

As a doctor, it was a thought he would naturally have and a part he had to check, so Han Yu-jin just smiled briefly and answered.

"Then now, let's take a look at the contents of the questionnaire you filled out outside earlier."

The doctor operated the computer and brought up another screen. It was the aptitude test he had filled out outside.

And the other man in his forties next to the doctor, who had been quiet until now, stepped forward and asked.

"You wrote that your awakened ability is mana-related knowledge, does this mean that you came to know knowledge on how to handle mana?"

"Yes. As for what kind of way… is it okay if I show you for a moment now?"

"As safely as possible, please."

Han Yu-jin, who nodded his head to mean it was a matter of course, raised one hand and emitted Spiritual Energy.

It was while adding a very simple Dharma script, and after it took the form of a small light and revealed itself, it suddenly split into nine lumps and began to rotate, slowly chasing each other's tails.

"No way…"

The one who made a surprised sound was the man from the Ability Management Bureau.

In fact, Han Yu-jin had been inwardly paying attention to him, because he had faintly felt Spiritual Energy from him.

He could tell right away whether he was an awakener or not if he used the Spirit Eye Spell, but he had deliberately restrained himself. And now, it seemed there was no particular need to try it.

If he hadn't handled mana himself as an ability awakener, he wouldn't have been this surprised.

"Did you just use a Glyph?"

Glyph was the Earth-style expression for a Dharma script. It could be seen as the same as the runes that were a staple in any fantasy novel.

As an aside, the reason the expression 'rune' was not adopted as an international standard like 'mana' was because the actual runic characters used in ancient Northern Europe still strictly existed as the intangible heritage of those countries.

In many ways, the situation was different from 'mana', which was a completely abstract concept.

"Yes."

"You haven't learned it separately, have you? Or is there some related person around you…?"

"There's nothing like that."

Han Yu-jin was very satisfied with his surprised reaction. So he tried hard to hold back a wide smile that was about to spread on its own.

"Can you show us anything else?"

"Here?"

"Ah."

As if he had come to his senses, he glanced at the middle-aged man next to the doctor who had been looking at him.

It was a gesture to do what he had to do next, an attitude that could clearly only be taken by a superior.

The middle-aged man naturally resumed the conversation with the test paper.

His job was to primarily check the contents of the test paper, to tell those who had just had their ability awakening confirmed what they should do from now on, and to introduce the various welfare benefits that an ability awakener could receive.

Naturally, one couldn't become a Hunter right after awakening an ability. Far from being able to become one, even the most basic certificate needed for ability utilization was not issued.

This place was just a place to test whether one had really awakened an ability.

Now, Han Yu-jin had to get verified in another part of the center that there was no problem with his ability use and control.

Only then would the 'Ability Possession-Suitability Certificate', also commonly called the basic certificate, be issued, and based on that, he would be able to acquire certificates in other fields or receive pre-Hunter training.

As soon as the middle-aged man's explanation was over, the man from the Ability Management Bureau immediately stepped forward.

"Shall we go get the basic certificate right away? I'll help you."

"If you would, I'd be grateful."

He didn't know exactly what grade of public official an administrative officer was, but in any case, it was very good that someone who was clearly not a low-ranking official would help him directly.

This was special treatment that anyone could recognize.

After bidding farewell to the doctor and the middle-aged man next to him, the place he headed to with the administrative officer was the first basement floor.

"It's not a very rare case to awaken a specific knowledge, but it's the first time I've seen someone handle Glyphs as skillfully as you, Han Yu-jin-ssi. Is it perhaps related to why your mana activity is high? Like, have you tried some special operation method?"

He was quite sharp to hit the core of the matter right away. Han Yu-jin didn't bother to deny it and coolly affirmed it.

"Yes. I also came to know a kind of training method for tempering the mind and body."

"Huh… But, even so, it's only been a few days since you awakened… What other application abilities are there?"

This time, too, Han Yu-jin didn't hide anything and told him everything he could do with the basic Dharma spells.

'There's no need to become a power-hiding protagonist.'

The reason protagonists in the media usually hide their power and pretend to be weak is to protect themselves from unknown threats that might exist.

It was to follow the proverb that a protruding stone gets hit by the chisel.

And at the same time, if an enemy really existed, it also made them misjudge one's full power.

'I have no intention of doing that.'

It wasn't just that being a power-hiding protagonist didn't fit his personality; there was a clear reason.

One was that he just couldn't see the need to do so, and the other was that he had to move actively anyway to supply Karma.

Thus.

The administrative officer from the Ability Management Bureau, who had heard all about his abilities with that judgment, even stopped walking for a moment and looked at him.

"…Telekinesis, barrier, pyrokinesis, movement ability, observation ability, concealment ability, healing ability, is that right?"

"Yes."

"And you can use all of that in the form of knowledge, that is, by learning it, not as an awakened ability?"

"Of course."

"Could other people learn it too?"

"If they can just feel mana, then probably."

Wouldn't he be able to get Karma that way?

Many people wouldn't be able to learn and use it in a short period of time, but in the long run, there was no other source of Karma like this.

Knowledge should not be hoarded for no reason.

The more widely he spread it and the more people benefited, the more he influenced them, the more it would return as a corresponding amount of Karma.

Of course, he would have to control it well so that he wouldn't be backstabbed.

"You should be a scholar or an educator, not a Hunter, shouldn't you?"

Han Yu-jin just laughed off the words, not knowing if they were a joke or serious.

The work of spreading knowledge didn't necessarily have to be led by him directly.

As long as he was the source, there wouldn't be much difference in the result, but the work of handling rifts was not like that.

The place he arrived at after following the administrative officer, who had started walking again, was located quite deep inside the first basement floor.

And for some reason, judging by the atmosphere, it wasn't a place that just anyone could come to.

"Here we are."

He stopped in front of an ability training room and naturally entered, unlocking the door by pressing a password.

Han Yu-jin also followed him in and was a little impressed by the interior view.

It was hard to believe that they had dug out a space of this size underground without any pillars.

Leaving the structure aside, the material that made up the floor, walls, and ceiling was also clearly not ordinary.

The administrative officer, who had moved to a computer device on one side, turned on the power and started to input something diligently.

While doing so, he occasionally asked for things like Han Yu-jin's resident registration number.

'It seems like he's not following any of the formal procedures at all.'

It felt that way, but it wasn't unpleasant at all. This was because he knew that everything, including this place, was special treatment.

"Well then…"

When the administrative officer operated something else, a single metal cylinder that had been on one wall of the training room slid out on its own and stood in the center.

It was a strange movement, and he didn't know what it had moved with or how.

Since they were places and things that an ordinary person would naturally not know about, it was understandable that Han Yu-jin, who had been an ordinary person until just a short while ago, would feel a sense of wonder.

"Shall we test that pyrokinesis first? You're curious too, aren't you, Han Yu-jin-ssi? About how much your attack power is."

"Yes, I am."

In fact, he knew it well enough and wasn't very curious, but Han Yu-jin played along.

In the case of a normal awakening, it would be normal not to have a chance to test it properly, as he said.

Han Yu-jin looked at the metal pillar standing still in the center of the training room and thought for a moment.

Perhaps interpreting that attitude in a certain way, the administrative officer spoke kindly.

"If it's too far, you can attack from a little closer. If there's anything that bothers you, please tell me right away."

"It's just, how sturdy is that thing?"

"Ah."

The administrative officer laughed as if it were amusing.

"It's a level 3 mana alloy, so it won't even get a scratch from any ordinary damage. It also has a composite armor structure, so you can attack without worry."

"But what if it breaks, just in case?"

"Taxes are for times like these."

Reassured by his confident words, Han Yu-jin took in the metal cylinder with his eyes again.

The Spirit Eye Spell, which had been activated at some point, was telling him the concentration of Spiritual Energy that the pillar contained, and it also allowed him to grasp what kind of complex structure it had.

'I think it's going to break, but surely he won't be so petty as to go back on his word.'

Of course, even if it did, he would be able to pay for it once he started his Hunter activities in earnest.

Though an unpleasant connection would be made.

Along with his thoughts, he raised his right hand and cast the Fire Bullet Spell at a perfectly ordinary level.

The moment that scorching sphere of flame was shot like an arrow and directly hit the metal pillar.

KABOOM—!!

With an explosive roar that echoed thunderously throughout the sealed training room, a gust of wind mixed with heat swirled around.

The startled administrative officer's gaze was fixed on the scene at the center of the impact, unable to move.

The object that was said not to even get a scratch from any ordinary damage was glowing red-hot as if it had come out of a furnace, and more than half of it was melted and broken.

Even the floor where the pillar had been standing had its thick tiles shattered and gouged out. If Han Yu-jin hadn't deliberately adjusted it, a large hole might have been pierced.

'I didn't think there was a second basement floor.'

He had paid a little attention, just in case there was a machine room or something not shown on the map.

The administrative officer was silent for more than ten seconds. He just looked back and forth between Han Yu-jin and the metal pillar a few times, as if in disbelief.

"This is… at least A-rank power…?"

Han Yu-jin, who heard that murmur, thought calmly.

That the power balance of the Xianxia-style cultivation method was indeed insane.
