Chapter 2 - chapter 2: whats good night crew.

"Ready," Kotone nodded, reaching out to push the heavy double doors open.

We stepped into the dimly lit lobby. It was quiet—too quiet—illuminated only by the faint, eerie glow from outside and a few emergency lights.

As we walked past the front desk, Kotone suddenly stopped. She stood perfectly still, staring at an empty spot near the center table. Her head tilted slightly, her expression shifting from curiosity to a quiet sort of understanding, as if she were listening intently to someone speaking. A few seconds passed. Then, she blinked, gave a small, firm nod to absolutely no one, and turned back to me with her usual bright smile, acting as if nothing had just happened.

'Ah. Pharos,' I realized, piecing it together. 'The little ghost kid in the striped pajamas with the sketchy contract. She must have just signed away a year of her life.'

I didn't press it. I just offered her a polite, oblivious smile in return, perfectly happy to let her handle the cryptic warnings about the end of the world.

We took exactly two more steps toward the stairs before a sharp voice shattered the silence.

"Who's there?!"

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Standing halfway up the main staircase, illuminated by a sliver of moonlight from a nearby window, was a girl with short, light brown hair wearing a pink cardigan over her school uniform. Yukari Takeba.

More importantly, she was aiming a silver handgun directly at us.

Her hands were shaking slightly, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and intense suspicion as she stared down at Kotone and me.

Kotone let out a startled gasp, instinctively shrinking back.

Before I even had time to think, my body reacted on its own. The inherent, protective nature of Will flared up, and I smoothly stepped slightly in front of Kotone, raising both of my hands in a calm, non-threatening gesture.

"Hey, it's okay," I said, keeping my voice incredibly gentle and steady. "We don't mean any harm. We're just the new transfers."

"How are you two...?" Yukari demanded, her voice trembling, the gun remaining leveled at us. "Why are you awake right now?!"

I furrowed my eyebrows, leaning into the act.

"What do you mean?" I asked, putting on my best confused, slightly concerned expression. "We just got off the train at the station. Is... is there a curfew we missed? Or a lockdown?"

"The train?" Yukari repeated, her confusion clearly warring with her suspicion. "But that's impossible. You shouldn't be—"

"Takeba. Wait."

A calm, authoritative voice echoed from the shadows at the top of the stairs. The distinct clicking of low heels on the hardwood steps filled the quiet lobby. A tall, strikingly elegant girl walked down into the dim light. She had long, brilliant red hair and an aura of absolute authority. Mitsuru Kirijo.

"I didn't think they'd arrive so late," Mitsuru said smoothly, walking past a visibly shaking Yukari. She gently placed a hand on Yukari's arm, silently urging her to lower the weapon. "It's alright. They're the new transfer students."

Yukari blinked, her hostility melting into sheer bewilderment. She looked from the gun, to Mitsuru, and then down to us. "Wait... the transfers? Both of them? But... why are they okay right now?"

"We'll discuss it later," Mitsuru dismissed gracefully, turning her sharp gaze toward Kotone and me. "I apologize for the confusion. And the fright. The gun is... a model. A toy. For self-defense. We've had some strange people wandering the streets lately, so we're a bit on edge."

"A toy," I repeated, letting out a convincing sigh of relief and lowering my hands. I gave Yukari a reassuring smile. "Well, it's definitely convincing. You really startled us, Senpai. But it's good to know you guys take dorm security so seriously."

Yukari flinched slightly, looking deeply guilty. "S-Sorry," she stammered, awkwardly hiding the Evoker behind her back and bowing her head. "I really didn't mean to scare you guys. It's just... dark out."

"I'm Kotone Shiomi!" Kotone chimed in from behind me, peeking over my shoulder. Her default cheerful state returned the absolute second she realized we weren't about to be shot. "Second year! And this is Katsuya-kun! He's a first year."

"Katsuya Akiya. Nice to meet you both," I added with a polite nod.

"I am Mitsuru Kirijo, a third-year here," the red-haired girl introduced herself. "Welcome to the Iwatodai Dorm. And this is Yukari Takeba. A second-year. It is quite late, and I'm sure your journey was exhausting. Takeba, please show them to their rooms."

"Right. Got it." Yukari hurried down the rest of the stairs, still refusing to meet our eyes. "Follow me. The boys' rooms are on the second floor, and the girls' are on the third."

I picked up my duffel bag and followed them up the stairs.

"Here you go, Shiomi-san," Yukari said as we reached the landing. She handed Kotone a brass key. "Your room is up on the third floor, second door on the right."

"Thanks! See you tomorrow, Katsuya-kun! Goodnight, Takeba-san!" Kotone waved brightly before bouncing up the next flight of stairs.

Yukari watched her go, rubbing her arm nervously before turning to me. She handed me a separate key.

"Your room is down this hall. Room 202. It's right next to the stairs," she explained softly. "Again... sorry about the lobby. Really."

"Don't worry about it, Takeba-senpai," I said warmly. "Get some rest."

I walked down the hall, found the door marked 202, and shoved the key in the lock. The room was painfully standard—a bed, a desk, a mini-fridge, and a small TV. Unpacking could definitely wait until tomorrow.

I set my bag down, kicked off my shoes, and threw myself face-first onto the bed.

'Day one,' I thought, my eyes heavy with exhaustion. 'Survived the green sky, survived the phantom contract, survived the gun. Tomorrow, I start the real mission: finding out where the teachers' lounge is.'

Within seconds, I was asleep.

———

[Third Person POV]

The heavy, reinforced metal door of the fourth-floor command room clicked shut, sealing out the eerie, oppressive silence of the Iwatodai Dormitory hallways. Inside, the room was a stark contrast to the cozy, antique aesthetic of the floors below. It was a high-tech nerve center, bathed in the glow of dozens of monitors, humming servers, and advanced Kirijo Group recording equipment that operated perfectly even during the Dark Hour.

Standing in the center of the room, her arms crossed firmly over her chest, was Mitsuru Kirijo. Her sharp eyes were fixed intently on the primary bank of screens.

Sitting in a rolling chair to her right was Akihiko Sanada. He wore his school uniform with the jacket completely unbuttoned, a thick white medical sling securely wrapping his left arm and shoulder. He was leaning forward, his good hand resting on his chin as he scrutinized the black-and-white night vision feeds.

Standing just behind them, wearing an awful patterned sweater and a remarkably cheerful smile that didn't quite fit the grim atmosphere, was Shuji Ikutsuki, the Chairman of the school board.

On the main display, two camera feeds were blown up to full size.

Feed A showed Room 302: Kotone Shiomi.

Feed B showed Room 202: Katsuya Akiya.

"Well," Akihiko broke the silence, his voice gruff but laced with undeniable intrigue. "They're definitely awake for it. Or, rather, they're experiencing it. No coffins."

On Feed A, Kotone was sprawled diagonally across her mattress. She hadn't bothered to change out of her school uniform, though her jacket was tossed haphazardly over the desk chair. One of her red earphones was tangled in her auburn hair, and her left arm was hanging limply off the side of the bed. She was snoring softly, completely dead to the supernatural phenomenon occurring outside her window.

On Feed B, Katsuya was arguably worse.

He hadn't even made it under the covers. He had walked into the room, dropped his duffel bag near the door, kicked off his sneakers, and simply face-planted onto the center of the bed. He was lying entirely on his stomach, arms pinned to his sides like a blue-haired torpedo. He hadn't moved a single muscle in twenty minutes.

"Fascinating," Ikutsuki mused, leaning over Akihiko's shoulder to get a better look. "Both of them stepped off the train precisely as the Dark Hour initiated. Yet, the Transmogrification effect completely bypassed them. It seems my hypothesis was correct. They both possess the Potential."

"Having the Potential and being able to summon a Persona are two entirely different hurdles, Chairman," Mitsuru noted, her tone strictly professional. "Though, I will admit, their arrival is unprecedented. Two transfers with the Potential on the exact same night."

Akihiko pointed out, a small, approving smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "Takeba said they just strolled up to the front door like nothing was wrong."

"Takeba also mentioned that she accidentally aimed her Evoker at them," Mitsuru sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "A severe lapse in judgment on her part, given how easily it could have escalated."

"But it didn't," Ikutsuki chimed in, pointing a finger at the monitor displaying Katsuya. "Takeba reported that the boy—Akiya-kun—immediately stepped in front of Shiomi-kun to shield her. He de-escalated the situation with remarkable calm before you even arrived, Mitsuru. A very noble reflex."

Mitsuru watched the unmoving, face-planted form of Katsuya on the screen. "Indeed. He acted to protect a girl he had supposedly just met. It speaks to a strong, inherent sense of responsibility. If he awakens to a Persona, that protective instinct will be incredibly valuable to S.E.E.S. on the front lines."

"I just want to know if they can fight," Akihiko said, absentmindedly rubbing his injured shoulder. "We need the numbers. Exploring Tartarus with just the three of us is pushing our limits, especially while I'm benched. If these two can pull their weight, we need to recruit them as soon as possible."

"Patience, Akihiko," Ikutsuki chuckled, adjusting his round glasses. "We don't want to overwhelm them on their first night. Let them settle in. Let them rest in peace, so to speak! Ah... because they're sleeping... and there are coffins outside! Ha!"

Mitsuru completely ignored the pun, refusing to even acknowledge it with a groan. Akihiko just stared blankly at the monitors.

Suddenly, a faint crackle of static hissed through the audio feed linked to Room 202.

Akihiko instantly sat up straight, his hand hovering over the console. "Hold on. Movement."

On the screen, Katsuya finally shifted. He groaned quietly, rolling over from his stomach onto his back. He threw one arm over his eyes to block out the eerie green moonlight filtering through the window.

The S.E.E.S. members watched with bated breath. Was he experiencing an awakening? Was the heavy atmosphere of the Dark Hour causing a reaction within his psyche?

Katsuya's lips parted. He mumbled something faintly into the quiet room.

Akihiko leaned closer to the speaker, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. "Volume up. He's saying something. It might be a manifestation."

Mitsuru reached over and smoothly turned the audio dial on the console, amplifying the microphone in Room 202.

"...Welcome to the cafe..." Katsuya mumbled softly in his sleep, his voice echoing clearly through the command room speakers. "...yes, I can carry those boxes for you... just... please don't point the toy gun at the pastries..."

A heavy, incredibly awkward silence descended upon the command room.

Akihiko slowly blinked, his intense, combat-ready expression dissolving into pure, unadulterated confusion. He looked up at Mitsuru. "...Is he dreaming about customer service?"

Mitsuru's elegant, composed demeanor faltered. A faint, completely uncharacteristic look of sheer bafflement crossed her face. She stared at the blue-haired boy on the screen, who had now happily curled onto his side and was hugging his own pillow with a peaceful, accommodating smile.

"...It appears so," Mitsuru said stiffly. "It seems he is entirely unfazed by the supernatural phenomena, and is instead processing Takeba's threat through the lens of a part-time job."

Ikutsuki burst into a loud, booming laugh, slapping his knee. "Well! It seems our noble protector has a very service-oriented mindset! You could say he really brings a lot to the table! Ha!"

Mitsuru promptly reached over and aggressively muted the audio feed.

"We will monitor them for the rest of the night," Mitsuru declared, turning her attention back to the console. "If they remain stable, we will approach them in the morning about—"

Suddenly, the primary console let out a sharp, piercing beep.

A red warning light began to flash violently across the top of the monitor bank, bathing the command room in a harsh crimson glow.

Akihiko instantly shot up from his chair, his good hand slamming down on the keyboard. "What is that?! A perimeter breach?"

"The sensors are going crazy," Mitsuru said, her elegant composure vanishing as her fingers flew across the control panel. "It's a Shadow. A massive one. It's right outside the dorm!"

"That's impossible!" Ikutsuki gasped, his cheerful demeanor completely evaporating.

CRASH.

The entire dormitory violently shuddered. Dust fell from the ceiling of the command room as a deafening impact resonated from the ground floor. On the security feeds, the cameras overlooking the front entrance cut out entirely, replaced by static.

"It's breaking in!" Akihiko yelled, instinctively grabbing his Evoker holster with his good hand before wincing in pain as his injured shoulder flared.

"Akihiko, stand down! You cannot fight in your condition!" Mitsuru ordered sharply. She grabbed the internal communications microphone, slamming the broadcast button. "Takeba! Do you read me?! Takeba!"

Static hissed back for a agonizing second before Yukari's panicked voice broke through.

"Mitsuru-senpai! What's happening?! The whole first floor is shaking!"

"A large-scale Shadow has breached the dormitory!" Mitsuru shouted over the blaring alarms. "It is highly aggressive! You need to evacuate the new transfers immediately! Get them to the roof, it's the only secure route away from the ground floor!"

"T-The roof?! But what about—"

CRASH.

Another sickening crunch of metal and concrete echoed through the building.

"Go! Now!" Mitsuru commanded.

On Feed A and Feed B, both Katsuya and Kotone bolted upright in their beds, abruptly awakened by the blaring sirens and the trembling of the building.

——

[Mc pov: Katsuya Akiya]

A deafening crash jolted me awake.

I bolted upright in bed, my heart hammering against my ribs. My room was bathed in that awful, sickly green light again. But the heavy silence that usually accompanied the Dark Hour was gone, replaced by a blaring emergency siren that echoed through the walls of the dorm.

CRASH. Another impact shook the building, so violent that my mini-fridge rattled and a textbook fell off my desk. It sounded like a wrecking ball had just slammed into the first floor.

'Wait...' I thought, my groggy brain frantically piecing together the timeline.

The Magician Shadow. The massive, multi-armed nightmare that attacks the dorm to kick off the main plot.

My first instinct—the deeply ingrained, self-preservation instinct of a guy who just wanted a quiet, comfortable life—was to dive under the bed, cover my ears, and wait for the protagonists to handle it. But before I could even pull the blanket over my head, that strange, foreign warmth flared in my chest. Will's instincts. The absolute, undeniable urge to make sure the people around me were safe.

'Damn it,' I cursed internally, throwing the covers off and shoving my bare feet into my sneakers without bothering to tie the laces. 'I can't just leave them. Stupid heroic genetics.'

I threw my door open and sprinted into the hallway.

"Akiya-kun!"

I looked toward the stairs. Yukari was already there, pulling a bewildered Kotone by the wrist. Yukari was in a pink camisole and sleep shorts, a silver Evoker strapped tightly to a holster on her thigh. She looked terrified, but determined. Kotone was still in her pajamas, looking wildly between the flashing emergency lights and the trembling floor.

"Takeba-senpai!" I called out, running over to them. "What's happening? Is the building collapsing?!"

"There's no time to explain!" Yukari shouted, her voice tight with panic. She grabbed the back of my t-shirt, pushing me toward the stairwell alongside Kotone. "We have to get out of here! To the roof! Now!"

We didn't need any more convincing. A guttural, echoing screech reverberated up the stairwell, followed by the terrifying sound of heavy, unnatural footsteps splintering the hardwood floor below us.

"Move!" Yukari ordered.

We scrambled up the stairs, our feet pounding against the metal grating. I stayed right behind Kotone, ready to catch her if she slipped. As we passed the third floor, a massive, grotesque hand made of black sludge and white masks smashed through the stairwell railing just a few feet below us.

Kotone shrieked, stumbling forward. I grabbed her shoulders to steady her, shoving her up the next flight. "Keep going! Don't look back!"

We burst through the heavy metal door at the top of the stairs and spilled out onto the rooftop. The night air was heavy and warm, the massive, unnatural moon looming over us like a giant green spotlight.

Yukari slammed the door shut behind us, panting heavily. She backed away, her hands trembling as she reached down to unholster the silver Evoker.

"Is... is everyone okay?" I asked, breathing hard, my hands resting on my knees.

"What was that thing?!" Kotone gasped, her bright eyes wide with terror as she stared at the closed door.

"It's..." Yukari started, but she never got to finish.

BOOM.

The heavy metal door we had just come through was ripped cleanly off its hinges. It flew across the rooftop, skidding to a halt near the edge.

Emerging from the stairwell was a towering horror. It was a massive, floating amalgamation of black ooze, draped in a tattered cape, with dozens of hands grasping at the air. Floating masks orbited its body, clattering together like bone.

The Magician.

'It's way bigger in person,' I realized, feeling a cold knot of genuine fear tighten in my stomach.

"Stay back!" Yukari yelled, stepping in front of us. She raised the Evoker, her hands shaking violently. She pressed the cold silver barrel against her own temple.

Kotone gasped, reaching out. "Takeba-san! What are you doing?!"

"I have to..." Yukari gritted her teeth, her eyes squeezing shut. Her finger trembled on the trigger. "Come on... I can do this..."

But the hesitation cost her.

The Shadow lunged, one of its massive arms sweeping across the rooftop with terrifying speed.

"Look out!" I shouted. Without thinking, I dove forward. I grabbed Yukari by the waist, using all my momentum to tackle her out of the direct path of the strike. We hit the concrete hard, rolling to avoid the crushing blow.

The impact of the Shadow's arm shattered the concrete where she had just been standing, sending debris flying.

"Gah!" Yukari cried out as we tumbled.

The Evoker slipped from her grasp. It clattered across the rooftop, sliding to a halt right at Kotone's feet.

The Shadow slowly turned its attention toward Kotone. It raised its massive, grotesque arms, the masks clattering in a deafening crescendo.

"Shiomi-senpai! Run!" I yelled, scrambling to my knees.

But Kotone didn't run.

She stood frozen for a split second, staring down at the silver, gun-like object at her feet. Then, her red eyes hardened. All the fear, the confusion, and the panic vanished, replaced by an eerie, absolute calm.

She bent down and picked up the Evoker.

"Shiomi... no..." Yukari gasped from the ground beside me, clutching her arm.

Kotone didn't look at us. She kept her eyes locked on the towering monster in front of her. Slowly, deliberately, she raised the Evoker. She didn't shake. She didn't hesitate. She pressed the barrel directly against the side of her head.

Her finger tightened on the trigger. A faint, ethereal blue aura began to radiate from her body, lifting her auburn hair into the air.

A small, serene smile crossed her lips.

"Per...so...na."
