Cherreads

Chapter 44 - 44 - New Love

The fluorescent lights of the food court hummed overhead, a monotonous drone that did little to fill the cavernous space between Devi and me. We sat at a small plastic table, sharing a monstrous banana split, its three scoops of ice cream slowly melting into a river of chocolate, strawberry, and caramel sauce. I dipped my spoon into the gooey mess, but my appetite was gone. My nerves were frayed, twisted into a tight knot in my stomach.

Devi had been quiet. Too quiet. For the entire ride to the mall, she'd stared out the window, her expression unreadable. Now, she methodically ate her portion of the sundae, each spoonful a small, precise movement. The silence was a physical presence, heavy and suffocating. Every clink of our spoons against the glass dish echoed like a gunshot. I wanted to say something, anything to break it, but I was terrified. What if I said the wrong thing? What if I shattered this fragile, unfamiliar peace and the old, angry Devi came roaring back?

I watched her out of the corner of my eye. She looked different in that pale yellow sundress. Softer. The hard edges she usually projected seemed to have been sanded down, leaving behind something vulnerable. It was unnerving. The Devi I knew was a fortress, armed with sarcasm and a withering glare. This Devi felt like open country, and I was afraid of getting lost in it.

"You're very lucky, you know," she said suddenly, her voice quiet but clear, cutting through the hum of the food court.

I nearly jumped. I put my spoon down, my full attention on her. "What do you mean?"

She finally looked at me, her dark eyes holding a strange, distant look. "I always thought of myself as the queen bee in college. The one everyone wanted. The one who called the shots." She gave a small, humorless laugh. "And for a while, it was true. But then I entered the corporate world, and my life just... fell apart. It's a different game out there. Being the prettiest, the most willing... it doesn't mean shit when you're up against people who are actually smart, who actually work for what they have."

She stirred the melting ice cream, creating a swirling vortex of colors. "I grew desperate. So desperate I was willing to... settle. I even thought about your father, for Christ's sake. Can you believe that? Me, settling for him." She shook her head, a flicker of the old disgust crossing her face before it vanished. "In the end, I wasn't a queen. I wasn't even a player. I was just a horny bitch. That's all I've ever been."

My heart ached for her in that moment. I saw the raw honesty in her admission, the painful stripping away of her own armor. I couldn't offer her platitudes or false comfort. All I could give her was the truth.

"I'm a horny bastard, too," I said, my voice low.

She looked up, a genuine smile gracing her lips for the first time all day. It was a beautiful sight, like the sun breaking through clouds. "I know," she said, her voice warm. "Believe me, I know." She took another bite of ice cream, her eyes twinkling with a familiar, mischievous light. "And I also know you won't stop with just us."

My blood ran cold. I was completely blindsided. My mind raced, trying to form a denial, a defense, anything. How could she know? Was I that transparent? Was this all a test, and I had just failed spectacularly?

Before the panic could fully take hold, she continued, her tone still conversational, as if we were discussing the weather. "But it's okay. I'm okay with it." She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "I'm actually a little curious. I wonder what other whores you plan to bring into our little harem."

I stared at her, my mouth slightly agape. This wasn't a trap. There was no anger in her eyes, no jealousy. There was only... acceptance. A thrilling, liberating, mind-bending acceptance. A wave of pure, unadulterated elation washed over me, so powerful it felt like a dream. I had to be dreaming. This couldn't be real. The woman who had called Kushi "leftovers" was now giving me permission to collect more? It was too much. It was everything.

A slow grin spread across my face, a feeling of invincibility coursing through my veins. I felt like a king who had just been granted an empire he never dared to ask for.

Devi watched my reaction, her smile widening. She saw the understanding dawn in my eyes, the sheer, unbridled joy. She had given me a gift, and she knew it. With a final, deliberate lick of her spoon, she stood up. The movement was fluid, confident, the Devi I knew, but tempered with this new, profound understanding.

"Come on," she said, her voice a low, husky invitation that sent a jolt straight to my groin. "Let's go home and fuck."

She didn't wait for an answer. She just turned and walked away, the sundress swaying around her hips, leaving me to stare after her, my heart hammering against my ribs. I threw a few bills on the table and scrambled to follow, my mind reeling, my body already on fire. The world had tilted on its axis, and I was more than ready to fall.
