Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 - A Day That Felt Like Freedom

Shanghai Disneyland

Morning arrived quietly.

Soft sunlight slipped through the curtains of Alessandra Hernandez's hotel room, spreading across the floor like a gentle invitation to begin again.

Her eyes opened.

6:00 AM.

Exactly.

Not because she needed to wake up that early.

But because she always did.

For most of her life, mornings followed the same rhythm—structure, discipline, expectations. Her parents believed that success was built through consistency, and Alessandra had grown up trusting that belief completely.

She had never questioned it.

Not once.

From childhood until the moment she finished law school, she followed everything they asked of her.

Study first.

Travel later.

Focus on your future.

No distractions.

And she listened.

Not because she was forced to.

But because she believed them.

Because she knew every sacrifice, they asked from her came from love.

She never resented them for it.

If anything, she felt grateful.

Her parents never demanded something she could not achieve. They simply saw her potential long before she did.

At twenty-six, she finished law school.

At twenty-seven, she took the Bar Exam.

No complaints.

No rebellion.

Just quiet determination.

Because that had always been the agreement between them.

Let us guide you until you become a lawyer, her father once told her.

After that, her mother added with a soft smile, you can choose your own path.

And for the first time in her life—

They kept that promise.

After the Bar Exam, her parents sat her down.

Not to give instructions.

But to give permission.

"You've done your part," her mother told her gently.

"Now go see the world the way you want to," her father said.

No pressure.

No conditions.

Just trust.

That was how she ended up in Shanghai.

This trip wasn't a rebellion.

It wasn't an escape.

It was simply the first decision she had ever made purely for herself.

Alessandra slowly sat up in bed, a quiet smile forming on her lips.

"This one is mine," she whispered to the empty room.

For the first time in her life—

The day ahead belonged only to her.

Ben was already waiting outside the park entrance when she arrived.

Just like the day before.

Calm.

Punctual.

Unreadable.

As if time moved differently around him.

"You're early," he observed as she approached.

Alessandra laughed softly.

"I've been trained that way my whole life."

Ben tilted his head slightly.

"Trained?"

They began walking toward the entrance together as the park gates slowly opened to the morning crowd.

"My parents were very strict about discipline," she explained. "Not in a harsh way… just very clear about priorities."

Ben listened quietly.

"And you followed everything?"

"Yes."

"No arguments?"

She shook her head.

"None."

That answer surprised him.

"Why?"

Alessandra thought for a moment before replying.

"Because they never asked anything selfish from me," she said honestly. "Everything they wanted was for my future."

A small smile appeared on her face.

"So, I trusted them enough not to fight them."

Ben studied her expression carefully.

"That's rare."

"I know."

There was no bitterness in her voice.

No resentment.

Only acceptance.

"And now?" Ben asked.

Alessandra looked around the park, now slowly filling with color, music, and excited visitors.

"Now," she said softly, "they told me I can finally decide what I want."

"And this is what you chose?"

She nodded.

"My first real decision."

Ben looked at her differently after that.

Most people he knew fought their families for independence.

But somehow—

She had earned hers.

Their first ride that morning was TRON Lightcycle again.

This time, she wasn't nervous.

This time, she was excited.

When the ride ended, she laughed freely as they stepped off.

"I think this might be the first time I've done something this impulsive."

Ben raised an eyebrow.

"You came to Disneyland alone. That's already impulsive."

She grinned.

"You should have seen my life schedule before this."

Ben folded his arms.

"How structured was it?"

She began counting on her fingers playfully.

"Wake up at six. Study. Classes. Study again. Mock exams. Review sessions. Law school research. Bar preparation."

"And no breaks?"

"Breaks were scheduled too."

That actually made Ben smile.

"You sound like a corporate executive."

"I probably would have been," she joked, "if I didn't go into law."

Later, they sat near the water eating lunch.

The afternoon sun reflected across the lake while distant laughter echoed through the park.

Ben asked quietly,

"Ahm, if this is your first real freedom… what do you want?"

Alessandra didn't answer right away.

Because for most of her life—

That question never existed.

What do you want?

Not what was practical.

Not what was expected.

Not what was safe.

Just—

What do you want?

"I don't fully know yet," she admitted.

"But I want to discover it myself."

Her eyes drifted toward the castle rising in the distance.

"I think that's why I came here first."

Ben followed her gaze.

"Why here?"

She spoke softly.

"Because this place reminds people what it feels like to dream."

She paused, thinking.

"And I think… I'm just starting to learn how to do that."

Ben didn't respond immediately.

Because her words stirred something he rarely allowed himself to think about.

She was just beginning her freedom.

He, on the other hand, had always had freedom—at least on paper.

Money.

Status.

Opportunity.

Yet none of it had ever truly felt like a choice.

That afternoon, they walked through the park without rushing.

No schedule.

No expectations.

Just wherever the park paths led them.

At one point, Alessandra suddenly stopped walking.

"You know what feels strange?" she asked.

Ben looked at her.

"What?"

"I don't feel like I have to prove anything today."

Ben understood that sentence more than she realized.

"I don't think you ever did," he said quietly.

She smiled.

"Maybe."

A short pause followed.

"But I wanted to make them proud first."

"And now?"

Her expression softened.

"Now I want to make myself proud too."

That night they stood again in front of the castle.

Fireworks burst across the Shanghai sky, illuminating the park with flashes of color.

Alessandra watched quietly.

"This trip feels different from anything I've ever done."

Ben glanced at her.

"Because you chose it."

She nodded.

"Yes."

After a moment she asked,

"Do you ever feel like your life was decided for you?"

Ben looked up at the fireworks exploding above them.

He didn't answer immediately.

"All the time," he admitted finally.

For a brief moment, they stood there not as strangers—

But as two people standing at the same crossroads from opposite directions.

She was just beginning her independence.

He was still searching for his.

As the fireworks slowly faded into the night sky, Alessandra said softly,

"I think meeting you was part of this journey too."

Ben turned toward her.

"And what journey is that?"

She smiled.

"Figuring out who I am when I'm finally allowed to choose."

For the first time that day, Ben had no clever reply.

Because for the first time in a long time—

He found himself wondering the same thing.

And somewhere between the fading fireworks and the quiet Shanghai night, their meeting no longer felt temporary.

Not because of romance.

Not yet.

But because sometimes—

Freedom introduces you to the exact person you didn't know you needed to meet.
