Chapter 15 - The Watcher in the Dark (Part II)

The fortress was quieter than usual. Not because everyone was asleep.

Because everyone was thinking. The strange darkness had left no bodies.

No wounds. No broken walls. And somehow...That made it worse.

Rin couldn't sleep. Again. He gave up after what felt like the hundredth attempt to close his eyes. His room suddenly felt too small.

Too warm. Too loud. The silence inside his own head had become unbearable.

With a sigh, he pulled on his coat and slipped into the corridor. The fortress at night was beautiful.

Snow drifted gently beyond the narrow windows. Moonlight painted the ancient stone silver.

The usual bustle had disappeared, replaced by distant footsteps and the occasional crackle of enchanted braziers.

Without thinking, Rin climbed the stairs leading toward the western balcony.

Cold air greeted him immediately. He welcomed it. It helped him breathe.

He rested both hands on the frozen railing and stared across the mountains. Everything looked peaceful. Almost enough to convince him nothing was wrong.

"...You should be sleeping."

Rin smiled faintly without turning.

"I was about to say the same thing."

Kaelith stood several steps behind him. He wasn't wearing armor. Only a dark coat draped over his shoulders. For once...

He looked less like the feared Demon General... And more like a man who carried too much responsibility.

Neither spoke. The wind filled the silence instead. Snowflakes drifted lazily between them.

Minutes passed. Surprisingly... It wasn't awkward. Rin realized something. He had stopped feeling the need to fill every silence with words.

Eventually... He spoke anyway.

"...I don't know what I'm doing anymore."

Kaelith looked toward the mountains.

"You survived."

"I mean..."

Rin laughed quietly.

"I thought I understood this world."

He searched for the right words.

"I thought I knew what would happen."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Now every answer creates three new questions. The future keeps changing. The System is falling apart. There are apparently multiple timelines."

He let out a tired breath.

"And someone called the Observer might be watching everything."

"..."

"I've officially lost control."

Kaelith remained silent. Not because he lacked an answer. Because he considered his words carefully. Finally—

"If destiny changed once..."

He looked toward Rin.

"...then it can change again."

Simple. Matter-of-fact. As though it were the most obvious truth in the world.

Rin blinked.

"...You really believe that?"

"I do."

"Why?"

Kaelith's gaze drifted toward the snowy valley below.

"Because I have already seen impossible things."

"You."

Rin stared.

"I arrived by accident." said Rin

"You remained by choice."

The answer settled somewhere deep inside Rin's chest.

Warm. Unexpectedly warm. For the first time in hours...

He smiled.

"...Thanks."

Kaelith inclined his head.

"You are welcome."

Before either of them could continue—

Heavy footsteps echoed from the stairway. Very heavy footsteps. Vorak appeared.

He carried enough food to feed an entire squad. A tray balanced on one shoulder. Another tucked beneath his arm.

"...Found you."

Rin blinked.

"...Is... all of that for me?"

"You skipped dinner."

"So your solution was..."

Vorak looked down at the mountain of food.

"...Dinner."

"...This is six dinners."

"You looked hungry."

"I always look hungry, but not so hungry."

"Exactly."

Before Rin could protest—

Another voice interrupted.

"I suspected Vorak would overcompensate."

Lucien emerged from the stairs carrying a neatly arranged basket.

Fresh fruit. Cheese. Warm pastries.

"You require vitamins."

Rin looked between them.

"...Did everyone organize this?"

"No."

Vorak answered immediately.

"It just happened."

"That somehow worries me."

Soft footsteps followed.

Selara appeared carrying a steaming kettle.

"I brought medicinal tea."

Rin groaned.

"...Please tell me it doesn't taste terrible."

"It does."

"..."

"But you'll sleep."

"...Cruel."

She looked almost pleased. Then...

One final figure stepped onto the balcony.

Kaelith. No. He had never left.

Rin realized he had quietly disappeared for only a moment. Now he returned carrying something wrapped in cloth. Without ceremony...

He placed a loaf of freshly baked bread beside Rin. Still warm.

"...The kitchens finished baking."

That was all he said. No explanation. No fuss. Just... Bread.

Rin slowly looked around.

Vorak.

Lucien.

Selara.

Kaelith.

"..."

"...Am I being adopted by three different people?"

A nearby soldier, who had absolutely not been eavesdropping, raised one hand.

"...Four."

Everyone turned toward him.

The poor soldier froze. He awkwardly pointed toward Kaelith.

"...The General counts."

Silence. Every eye shifted toward Kaelith.

The Demon General considered the statement. Then...

He simply continued slicing the bread. He didn't deny it. Rin nearly inhaled the piece he had just taken.

"Cough—"

Lucien politely patted his back.

"You should chew first."

Vorak nodded solemnly.

"Very important."

Selara covered her smile with her teacup. The soldiers exchanged victorious looks.

One quietly whispered,

"I won."

Another sighed dramatically.

"I bet against it."

"You always lose."

"I know."

For the first time since Ji-ho's arrival...

Laughter echoed across the fortress walls.

Even Kaelith's lips twitched. Only slightly. But Rin noticed.

Much later... The laughter faded. The fortress slept.

Rin found himself walking toward the prison once more. A single guard opened the gate.

"...Can't sleep?"

"No."

"...Me neither."

The guard nodded sympathetically and stepped aside.

Ji-ho was awake. Sitting exactly where Rin had left him.

"...You came back."

"I had questions."

"I figured."

For a while... Neither spoke. Then Ji-ho frowned.

"...I remembered something."

Rin immediately straightened.

"What?"

"...Not a person. Not a place. Just..."

He squeezed his eyes shut.

"...a title."

"What title?"

Ji-ho whispered the words as though afraid someone else might hear.

"The Observer."

The air suddenly felt colder.

"You've mentioned it before."

Ji-ho nodded weakly.

"I think... I think it exists outside the timelines."

"Outside?"

"It remembers."

"What?"

"Everything."

Rin frowned.

"When history changes..."

Ji-ho swallowed.

"...everyone inside the timeline forgets. But..."

His breathing became uneven.

"...the Observer...doesn't."

Rin's heartbeat accelerated.

"So every reset...It remembers. Every failure. It remembers. Every death. It remembers."

Ji-ho suddenly grabbed his head.

His face twisted in pain.

"...Wait... I... I know something else..."

Blood trickled from his nose.

Rin's eyes widened.

"Ji-ho?"

The young man gasped.

"No... No... They don't want—"

He cried out. A sharp, agonizing scream echoed through the prison. Blood splattered onto the stone floor.

"Ji-ho!"

Rin rushed toward the bars. The guards shouted. Lucien! Someone call Lucien!

Ji-ho collapsed before another word escaped his lips.

Unconscious. Breathing. But completely unresponsive.

Far away...

Beyond mountains.

Beyond kingdoms.

Beyond time itself.

A crystal larger than any castle pulsed quietly. Countless glowing threads floated inside.

Each one carried a name. Each one... A possibility.

The hooded figure watched in silence. One thread dimmed. Then snapped.

A soft sigh escaped beneath the hood.

"...Another failed possibility."

The broken thread dissolved into countless particles of light.

The figure raised one hand. Another thread drifted closer.

RIN LEE

Still glowing.

Still defiant.

The figure tilted its head.

"...It seems... you refuse to disappear."

Somewhere nearby... mAnother thread flickered.

KAELITH

Deviation increasing.

The figure smiled. Not happily. Curiously.

"...Interesting."

With a single gesture... The crystal continued turning. As though searching... For another future.

Near dawn...

Exhaustion finally claimed Rin. He barely remembered returning to his room. The moment his head touched the pillow...

Darkness swallowed him. No dreams came. Instead...

A memory. One that wasn't his.

Ash. Black snow drifted through a ruined city. Broken towers pierced a crimson sky. Silence stretched endlessly.

Thousands of swords stood buried in the earth. Their owners long gone.

One figure remained.

Kaelith. Older. His armor cracked beyond repair. His cape torn.

Blood stained his hands. Not fresh. Ancient. He stood alone among the sea of broken blades.

Slowly... He turned. His eyes found Rin immediately.

There was no surprise. No anger. Only unbearable exhaustion.

As though he had waited... For a very long time.

His lips moved.

"You came earlier this time."

Rin froze.

Earlier?

Before he could answer—

A shadow rose behind Kaelith.

Too large. Too dark. Its face couldn't be seen.

Only two glowing white eyes opened within the void.

They stared directly at Rin.

Then spoke. One word.

"Reset."

The world shattered.

Glass. Stone. Sky. Memory itself. Everything broke apart.

Rin bolted upright. His lungs burned. Cold air filled the room. His breath formed white mist.

"...What..."

The fireplace had gone out. Frost covered the floorboards.

Slowly... His eyes drifted toward the window.

Something rested upon the sill. A single black feather.

Perfectly still. Beneath it...

A folded piece of paper. His heartbeat quickened.

The handwriting... Looked strangely familiar. With trembling fingers...

He unfolded the note. Only one sentence had been written.

Do not trust the System.

Rin stared. That handwriting... was his .

Outside...

Snow continued falling.

Somewhere in the darkness...

Something watched the fortress.

And smiled.
