"I choose you."
The words remained inside Rin's mind. Then everything disappeared.
The dark room. The rain. The crying child. The woman.
Gone.
Rin opened his eyes. He was back in the library. For several seconds, he didn't move.
His breathing was uneven. His hands were trembling. He looked around.
The bookshelves were still there. The candles were still burning.
The strange white feather remained on the table. Everything was normal.
Except Rin wasn't. He pressed a hand against his chest.
"Who did I choose?"
The question came out as a whisper. No answer. Rin closed his eyes again, desperately trying to return to the memory.
Nothing. He couldn't force it. The harder he tried, the farther it seemed to move.
He opened his eyes.
"Great."
He leaned back against the chair.
"Another memory that gives me one sentence and then disappears."
The feather remained silent. Rin stared at it. The memory had been different from the others.
