Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Terms of the Boundary

Night settled over the city, but it did nothing to quiet the tension that had begun to take shape.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't visible.

But it was there.

---

Watching.

---

Suho stood alone on the rooftop this time.

The same place.

The same height.

The same open view of the city stretching endlessly beneath him.

---

He wasn't waiting.

---

But he wasn't leaving either.

---

"…You're early."

---

The voice came from behind him.

Calm.

Measured.

Expected.

---

Suho didn't turn immediately.

"…You were already here," he replied.

---

A faint pause.

Then—

A quiet chuckle.

---

"…Good."

---

The Boundary Walker stepped into view, not appearing, not arriving, but simply existing where he had chosen to be seen. His golden eyes reflected the city lights faintly, but there was nothing warm about them.

Only clarity.

---

[ Hunter: ??? ]

[ Rank: S ]

[ Title: Boundary Walker ]

[ Status: Active ]

---

"…You learn fast," he said.

---

Suho turned now.

---

"…You talk like you've been watching for a while."

---

"I have."

---

No hesitation.

No denial.

---

"…Since when?"

---

The man tilted his head slightly.

"…Since the system started reacting to you instead of the other way around."

---

That—

Was recent.

---

But not just recent.

---

Important.

---

Suho's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Then you know why I'm here."

---

"Yes."

---

"…And you still came."

---

The man stepped closer.

Not threatening.

Not aggressive.

But deliberate.

---

"…Because you're about to cross a line," he said.

---

Silence.

---

"…Phase Four," Suho said.

---

A flicker of recognition passed through the man's eyes.

---

"…So you've seen it."

---

"…Not fully."

---

"…You're not supposed to."

---

A pause.

---

Then—

The man exhaled slowly.

---

"…That's where the system stops being a system," he said.

---

Sera's voice cut in from behind the stairwell entrance. "…And starts being what?"

---

She stepped out, her presence steady, her gaze locked onto the man without hesitation.

---

"…A boundary," he replied.

---

She frowned slightly.

"…That's not an answer."

---

"No," he said calmly.

"…It's a warning."

---

Silence settled again.

---

Then—

Suho stepped forward slightly.

---

"…Explain it properly."

---

The man studied him for a moment.

Not evaluating.

Not testing.

---

Confirming.

---

"…Phase Four is where most candidates fail," he said.

---

"…Fail how?"

---

"…They stop being themselves."

---

That—

Wasn't what Sera expected.

---

"…That doesn't make sense," she said.

---

"It will," the man replied.

---

He looked directly at Suho now.

---

"…Up to Phase Three, you're learning control."

---

A pause.

---

"…In Phase Four, the system starts learning you."

---

Silence.

---

Heavy.

---

"…And if it doesn't like what it sees?"

---

The man didn't hesitate.

---

"…It replaces you."

---

The air shifted slightly.

---

Sera's grip tightened.

"…Replace…?"

---

"…You don't die," he said.

"…You just stop being the one in control."

---

That—

Was worse.

---

Suho didn't react outwardly.

But the system flickered faintly.

---

[ Hidden Protocol: Disturbance Detected ]

---

"…You've seen it happen," Suho said.

---

The man nodded once.

---

"…More than once."

---

"…And you're still here."

---

"…Because I never crossed that line."

---

A pause.

---

"…You stopped," Suho said.

---

"…I chose not to proceed."

---

That—

Changed the tone completely.

---

Sera's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So you're telling us to quit?"

---

"No."

---

Immediate.

---

Clear.

---

"…I'm telling him to understand the cost before he continues."

---

Silence.

---

Then—

The man raised his hand slightly.

---

The air in front of him shifted.

---

Not opening.

Not tearing.

---

But revealing.

---

A fragment.

---

Not as clear as the one in the dungeon.

Not as controlled.

---

But enough.

---

A hunter.

Standing in a space similar to the trial.

Surrounded by system structures.

---

Advancing.

---

Then—

Stopping.

---

Their expression changed.

---

Not pain.

Not fear.

---

Absence.

---

The system moved.

---

Their body followed.

---

But their will—

Didn't.

---

The fragment ended.

---

Silence returned.

---

Sera exhaled slowly.

"…That's…"

---

"…What happens when you lose alignment," the man said.

---

Suho's gaze remained steady.

---

"…And your deal?"

---

Because this—

Wasn't just a warning.

---

The man smiled faintly.

---

"…Good."

---

He stepped closer again.

---

"…I don't stop you," he said.

"…I don't report you."

---

A pause.

---

"…And I help you understand the boundaries."

---

Sera frowned.

"…That's not free."

---

"No," he said calmly.

---

Then—

He looked directly at Suho.

---

"…When the time comes…"

---

A brief pause.

---

"…You let me witness Phase Four."

---

Silence.

---

"…That's it?" Sera asked.

---

"…That's enough."

---

Because for someone like him—

Observation—

Was value.

---

Suho didn't answer immediately.

---

Because he understood something important.

---

This man wasn't offering help.

---

He was investing.

---

"…And if I refuse?"

---

The man's expression didn't change.

---

"…Then I still watch."

---

A pause.

---

"…But without helping."

---

Fair.

---

Honest.

---

Dangerous.

---

Suho exhaled slowly.

---

Then—

"…Fine."

---

Sera looked at him sharply.

"…Suho—"

---

"It's worth it," he said.

---

Because information—

At this level—

Was power.

---

The man nodded once.

---

"…Good."

---

Then—

He turned.

---

"…We start small," he added.

---

Sera frowned.

"…What does that mean?"

---

He glanced back slightly.

---

"…Your next hunt won't be normal."

---

A pause.

---

"…And you'll need to see why."

---

Then—

He stepped forward.

---

And disappeared again.

---

Silence settled over the rooftop.

---

Sera exhaled sharply.

"…We just made a deal with something dangerous."

---

"Yes."

---

"…You trust him?"

---

Suho looked at the city below.

---

"…No."

---

A pause.

---

"…But I trust the direction he's pointing."

---

Because now—

Phase Four wasn't just a mystery.

---

It was a line.

---

And crossing it—

Would change everything.
