Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Heartbeats in the Shadows

Sana barely slept that night. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Arjun — the way his hand had brushed hers, the way his eyes softened when he warned her to stay safe, and the lingering tension from yesterday's confrontation.

By the time she reached the café for her morning shift, she felt like her heart was still racing from the previous evening. Arjun was already there, effortlessly managing the counter, but something in his posture — the slight stiffness, the quick glances toward the door — told her the threat wasn't gone.

"Morning," Sana said softly, adjusting her apron.

Arjun's gaze found hers, and he offered a small smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Morning. Ready for another day of chaos?"

Sana forced a smile. "As ready as I'll ever be."

The morning passed in a blur of orders, laughter, and accidental touches. Every time their hands brushed — handing over cups, grabbing utensils, or bumping into each other — Sana felt sparks that made her heart pound. Each accidental touch lingered longer than it should, and the tension between them became almost unbearable.

As the café quieted down after lunch, Arjun suddenly appeared behind her, leaning close. "There's something I need to show you," he whispered. His breath brushed her ear, sending a shiver down her spine.

"W-what?" Sana stammered, barely able to speak.

He took her hand gently, guiding her out the back door of the café. They walked a short distance to a secluded garden behind the campus. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting warm, golden patterns across the path.

Sana's heart raced. "Arjun… what is this?"

He stopped and turned to face her, eyes locking onto hers. "I wanted to make sure you were safe… and to tell you something."

Her pulse quickened. "Tell me what?"

Arjun hesitated, the usual charm replaced by raw honesty. "I… I didn't expect to feel this way, Sana. But every time we touch, every time we talk… I can't ignore it. You make everything feel… alive. Even chaos."

Sana's cheeks burned. "Arjun… I…"

Before she could finish, he stepped closer, and the space between them vanished. His hand cupped her cheek gently, and she felt the warmth of his palm, the steady heartbeat beneath it.

"You don't have to say anything," he murmured, his forehead resting against hers. "Just… feel it with me."

And in that moment, the world around them disappeared. The chaos of college, the threats, the stolen laptops, the masked figures — none of it mattered. There was only this — a heartbeat, a touch, a connection that sent electricity through both of them.

Sana's lips parted, and before she could even think, Arjun leaned in. Their lips brushed in a soft, fleeting kiss — tentative, accidental, yet loaded with unspoken emotions. Sana's heart raced so fast she thought it might burst, and Arjun pulled back slightly, his eyes searching hers.

"I… I shouldn't," he whispered, though his hands lingered on her arms. "It's… complicated. But I can't stay away from you."

Sana felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes — frustration, longing, and something tender all at once. "I don't care about complicated," she whispered back, her hands finding his. "I just… care about you."

For a moment, the garden was silent except for their breathing, hearts beating in unison.

Then, a loud crash from the café shattered the moment. Sana's eyes widened, and Arjun's expression hardened instantly.

"Stay here," he said, his voice low and sharp. Within seconds, he sprinted toward the café, leaving Sana trembling in the garden, heart still racing from both the kiss and the sudden danger.

Cliffhanger: Who is causing the latest disturbance at the café, and will Arjun be able to protect Sana while keeping the secret danger at bay?
