Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Past Returns

The evening campus was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights, but the shadows between the trees seemed to stretch unnaturally long. Sana and Arjun walked briskly toward the café, their hands brushing, their senses alert. Both knew the calm of the morning had been fleeting.

"I hate that your past keeps dragging us into this," Sana murmured, her voice tight with frustration and fear.

Arjun's hand found hers, gripping it firmly. "I never wanted this for you. But now… we face it together. That's all that matters."

Before Sana could respond, a sudden shadow detached itself from the treeline. Arjun's body moved instinctively, positioning himself between Sana and the figure. The man stepped forward, hooded, but this time there was no hiding the cold intensity in his gaze — he was the same person Arjun had once crossed, the one whose vendetta had ignited the chaos.

"Arjun," the man said smoothly, voice dripping with malice, "you've been hiding, running… but the past doesn't forgive. And neither do I."

Arjun's jaw tightened. "Stay away from her. This ends now."

Sana's heart pounded. "Arjun… be careful!"

The man lunged, quick and calculated. Arjun reacted immediately, deflecting the attack, his movements precise, protective, and fluid. Sana instinctively ducked behind him, her hands trembling, but her eyes never left his.

"You shouldn't have brought her into this," the intruder hissed, circling them like a predator.

Arjun's gaze locked on the man. "She's mine. Anyone who hurts her will regret it."

The confrontation escalated rapidly — blows, dodges, and narrow escapes. Rain from earlier dripped from the trees, making the ground slippery, but Arjun's focus never wavered. Every move was calculated to keep Sana safe, every glance a silent reassurance.

Finally, after a tense exchange, Arjun landed a decisive move, sending the intruder sprawling. Panting, he turned to Sana, brushing her hair from her rain-soaked face. "Are you hurt?" he asked, concern flashing through his eyes.

"No… I'm okay," Sana whispered, her chest heaving. She stepped closer, wrapping her arms around him. "I'm safe… because of you."

Arjun's hands held her gently, forehead resting against hers. "I can't promise the world will be easy… but I can promise you, I'll always protect you."

Sana smiled through the adrenaline and rain. "Then I'll always stand by you. Always."

For a fleeting moment, the world seemed to pause — the rain, the shadows, the danger — all fading into the rhythm of their hearts beating together.

But just as relief began to settle, the intruder let out a low, menacing laugh from the distance. "You think it's over? You have no idea what's coming…"

Arjun stiffened, eyes darkening with determination. "No matter what it is… we face it together."

Sana held his hand tighter. "Together," she echoed.

Cliffhanger: The past has fully arrived, and this mysterious figure has more than just vengeance in mind. How far will Arjun go to protect Sana, and will their love survive the coming storm of secrets and danger?
