Chapter 1 - epigraph

Good versus evil.

Devas versus asuras.

Gods versus demons.

The fight that has defined our world for centuries now.

Not just our world—but so many others. Worlds we haven't even heard of, worlds that spin far away from our own.

And so this fight existed long before we humans did.

And so it had already written in red—long before we were born—the reason for our misery.

One day, we would fall prey to ra-gun.

The energies of demonic creatures that were left scattered and buried underground after the final battle between gods and demons.

Centuries later, these demonic energy remnants would occupy the bodies of insects and animals underground—turning them into flesh-eating creatures that would terrorize humans day and night.

Soon named 'Vessels', not a day went by without these creatures emerging from the ground—feeding gruesomely on every human they could find.

But we would not be destroyed.

Glory to the Guardians!

The ones chosen by the gods and gifted with their own sa-gun—divine energy—to protect us from the Vessels.

Through all the kingdoms that rose and fell since the first Vessel appeared,

through all the transformations that history witnessed since,

if ever there was a reason that we humans could still progress as we always had...

if ever there was a reason that we could still realize dreams that didn't just end with becoming fodder for those vicious creatures,

then that reason was the Guardians.

The ones who drew a shield between the Vessels and us.

The ones who made sure every part of our lives remained untouched by the remnants of that age-old fight between gods and demons.

But so protected we felt that we'd forgotten something crucial.

That fight had existed long before we humans did.

That fight was larger than our lives.

Not all that remained could be seen.

Not all gifts had to be bestowed.

Ancient power was everywhere for the taking—

for the one that knew where to look, how to contain, when to strike.

It wouldn't be long before we grasped these three truths—setting in motion a chain of events that would change our fates forever.
