Chapter 41 - Chapter 41 – What Happened to Akane

The fire burned low between them.

Small.

Controlled.

Just enough heat to push back the cold creeping through the forest.

Night had settled quietly around the camp.

No attacks.

No movement.

Only the distant sound of wind brushing through the trees.

Kushina sat cross-legged near the fire, absently turning a small stick between her fingers.

Minato sat nearby, leaning against one of the roots surrounding the clearing.

Quiet as always.

Watching the flames.

Daichi stood at the edge of the camp for a long time before finally returning.

His expression unreadable.

As usual.

Kushina glanced up briefly.

"You ever sleep?"

"…occasionally."

"That means no."

"…correct."

She snorted softly.

For a moment, silence settled again.

Not uncomfortable.

Just tired.

The kind of silence that came after too many thoughts and not enough rest.

Kushina stared into the fire for a while before speaking again.

"…you said Akane chose something else."

The crackling fire was suddenly the only sound.

Daichi didn't answer immediately.

Minato's gaze shifted slightly toward him but he stayed silent.

Kushina lifted her eyes.

"…I want to know."

Daichi remained standing for another second before finally sitting across from the fire.

Slowly.

Like he already regretted it.

"…you won't like the answer."

Kushina shrugged faintly.

"I haven't liked much lately."

A faint rumble inside her.

"…fair…"

She ignored it.

Daichi looked into the flames for a long moment before speaking.

"Akane was strong."

A pause.

"Stronger than most people realized."

Kushina listened carefully.

"She learned fast. Adapted quickly."

Another pause.

"…too quickly."

Kushina frowned slightly.

"That's bad?"

"Yes."

That surprised her.

Daichi's gaze stayed fixed on the fire.

"She stopped fearing her power."

A beat.

"And started trusting it too much."

Silence settled heavily around the clearing.

Kushina's fingers tightened slightly around the stick in her hands.

"…that sounds familiar…"

"…careful…"

She ignored that too.

Daichi continued quietly.

"She believed control meant winning every fight."

A pause.

"She thought if she pushed harder than everyone else… nothing could stop her."

Kushina swallowed slightly.

"…and?"

For the first time since he started talking—

Daichi hesitated.

Small.

But real.

"She stopped listening."

The fire cracked softly.

"She stopped resting. Stopped slowing down."

A beat.

"She wanted to carry everything herself."

Kushina looked down.

That one landed too close.

"…and Kurama?"

Daichi's expression hardened slightly at the name.

"He noticed."

Silence.

Kushina's chest tightened.

"…of course he did…"

"He pushed her further."

A pause.

"Not because he cared."

Another.

"Because he wanted to see how far she'd go."

A faint, dark chuckle echoed inside her.

"…accurate…"

Kushina clenched her jaw.

"You're enjoying this conversation way too much."

"…a little…"

Minato's voice cut in softly.

"What happened to her?"

Daichi's eyes lowered slightly.

For a second—

he looked tired.

Actually tired.

"She made a choice."

Silence settled instantly.

Kushina's gaze sharpened.

"What kind of choice?"

Daichi looked at her then.

Directly.

"She used more power than her body could safely contain."

A cold weight settled in Kushina's stomach.

"…why."

"She thought it would end the fight faster."

A beat.

"She thought if she lost control for just a moment… she could force everything to stop."

Kushina's breathing slowed.

Uneven now.

"…and did it work?"

Daichi's voice stayed calm.

"Yes."

That surprised her.

Then—

"No one survived the battlefield."

Silence.

Heavy.

The fire crackled softly between them.

Kushina stared at him.

"…including her?"

Daichi didn't answer.

Didn't need to.

Kushina looked away slowly.

Her chest felt tighter now.

"…that's not losing control…"

"…no…"

"…that's giving up…"

That was worse somehow.

Far worse.

Because she understood it.

Too easily.

The idea of ending everything in one overwhelming moment.

One decision.

One release.

"…you understand her…"

"…I said shut up…"

Minato broke the silence carefully.

"You think Kushina is heading toward the same thing."

Daichi didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…I think she's closer than she realizes."

Kushina's head snapped up instantly.

"You really know how to make people feel better."

"That's not my job."

"No kidding."

The frustration in her voice faded almost as quickly as it appeared.

Because beneath it—

she understood.

That was the worst part.

Daichi leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on his knees.

"Akane believed power alone would solve fear."

A pause.

"It doesn't."

The firelight flickered across his face, shadows shifting beneath his eyes.

"For a while… she thought she controlled it."

Another pause.

"Then one day she stopped asking herself why she was fighting."

Silence.

Kushina stared into the flames again.

"…and that's when she lost."

"Yes."

Quiet.

Certain.

Kushina's fingers loosened slowly around the stick in her hand.

"…I don't want that."

Her voice came out quieter than expected.

More honest.

Daichi nodded once.

"I know."

That simple answer hit harder than she expected.

Not judgment.

Not criticism.

Just truth.

Minato's gaze shifted toward her again.

"You're already doing something Akane didn't."

Kushina frowned slightly.

"…what."

"You stop."

A pause.

"You question yourself."

Another.

"You pull back."

Kushina blinked once.

"…that doesn't feel impressive."

"No," Minato admitted calmly.

A faint pause.

"But it's the reason you're still here."

Silence settled again.

But lighter this time.

Not gone.

Never gone.

But lighter.

Kushina leaned back slightly, staring up through the trees toward the dark sky above.

"…she sounds lonely."

Daichi looked at the fire for a long moment before answering.

"She was."

A beat.

"She thought strength meant carrying everything alone."

Kushina closed her eyes briefly.

"…that's stupid."

"…yes…"

"…and familiar…"

She sighed softly.

"Seriously, shut up."

A low rumble answered her.

Almost amused.

For a few moments, none of them spoke again.

The fire crackled quietly between them.

But something had changed.

Not safety.

Not peace.

Understanding.

And somewhere deep inside herself—

Kushina realized something that scared her more than the fighting ever had.

She understood Akane.

Far more than she wanted to.

Far away—

hidden beneath stone and darkness—

a figure sat motionless behind sealed walls.

Chains covered the floor around him.

His breathing uneven.

Eyes empty.

Then—

very softly—

he whispered:

"…help…"

And somewhere else in the darkness—

someone smiled.
