Chapter 54 - Chapter 54 – The Meeting

The forest was silent.

Not peaceful.

Expectant.

Kushina walked alone beneath the canopy, the morning light barely reaching the ground through the dense branches above.

Every step echoed louder than it should have.

Not because of the forest.

Because she was alone.

"…still time to turn back…"

She didn't answer.

"…that's a no…"

A faint rumble followed.

Almost pleased.

She ignored it.

The meeting place wasn't difficult to find.

That bothered her.

No hidden trails.

No misleading signs.

No traps she could see.

Just a narrow path leading deeper between ancient trees.

Like they wanted her to arrive.

"…too easy…"

"…exactly…"

Her hand drifted instinctively toward where her chain would form.

Not yet.

Just ready.

Always ready.

After nearly an hour, the forest opened.

A circular clearing.

Perfectly still.

No birds.

No insects.

No wind.

Stone pillars surrounded the edge of the clearing, each covered in faded sealing formulas worn by time.

Old.

Very old.

Kushina slowed.

"…this place…"

"…important…"

The pressure inside her shifted.

Curious.

Watching.

Waiting.

She stepped into the center.

Nothing happened.

For several long seconds.

Silence.

Then—

"You came."

The voice echoed from everywhere at once.

Calm.

Controlled.

Emotionless.

Kushina turned slowly.

Three masked figures stepped from the shadows.

Not attacking.

Not threatening.

Simply approaching.

The same measured movements.

The same impossible calm.

She counted automatically.

Three.

Only three.

"…too few…"

"…they expected you alone…"

One of the figures stopped several meters away.

"You accepted our invitation."

Kushina crossed her arms.

"Don't sound so excited."

No reaction.

Of course.

Another figure spoke.

"You came despite knowing it was a trap."

She shrugged.

"Curiosity is a terrible habit."

A pause.

"So I've been told."

Silence settled briefly.

Then the first figure inclined its head ever so slightly.

"You seek answers."

"Yes."

"You seek Akane."

"Yes."

"You seek Ren."

Kushina's jaw tightened.

"…yes."

The figure remained perfectly still.

"We will answer your questions."

She frowned immediately.

"…just like that?"

"Yes."

"…what's the catch?"

Silence.

Then—

"There isn't one."

That made her laugh.

Short.

Disbelieving.

"…that's the worst lie I've heard all week."

"It is not a lie."

The figure slowly raised one hand.

Not threatening.

Just deliberate.

A seal beneath one of the stone pillars began to glow.

The air shifted.

Not violently.

Smoothly.

Like something ancient was waking.

Kushina's chain flickered instinctively beside her.

"…careful…"

"I know."

The light spread across the clearing.

Lines of chakra flowed from pillar to pillar until they formed a complete circle around them.

Kushina instinctively took a step back.

"…containment…"

"…yes…"

The figure noticed.

"You have seen this pattern before."

"At your testing site."

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

"This place is older."

Much older.

The glow intensified.

Images began to shimmer across the air.

Not genjutsu.

Memories.

Fragments.

Kushina's eyes widened.

She saw an enormous village surrounded by the sea.

Tall spiral towers.

Red-haired shinobi walking its streets.

Children laughing.

Families training.

Seal masters working together beneath enormous stone monuments.

"…Uzushiogakure…"

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Yes."

The figure answered quietly.

"This is what was lost."

The image changed.

Smoke.

Fire.

Collapsed buildings.

Blood.

Screams.

The village burning.

Kushina felt her chest tighten.

"…what happened…"

Another image appeared.

Red-haired shinobi fighting desperately.

Seal barriers collapsing.

Foreign shinobi flooding through the streets.

The destruction was absolute.

No triumph.

Only tragedy.

The figure finally spoke again.

"Your clan was feared."

A pause.

"Because your seals could control what others never could."

Another image appeared.

A younger Akane.

Training.

Smiling.

Alive.

Kushina froze.

"…Akane…"

"She inherited more than talent."

A pause.

"She inherited responsibility."

The image shifted again.

Akane older now.

Training with Daichi.

Arguing.

Laughing.

Growing stronger.

Kushina's expression softened.

For just a moment.

Then—

everything changed.

Akane stood alone inside another stone chamber.

Much like this one.

Different seals.

Different people.

The same masks.

Kushina's breathing slowed.

"…no…"

The figure's voice remained calm.

"She came here willingly."

Silence.

Cold.

Immediate.

Kushina stared at the memory.

"She wasn't captured?"

"No."

"She sought us."

"…why?"

Another pause.

Then—

"Because she wanted to save everyone."

The words echoed through the clearing.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

Kushina looked from the memories back to the masked figures.

"…you're lying."

"We expected that response."

The figure lowered its hand.

The memories faded.

Only silence remained.

Then—

very quietly—

it spoke again.

"We are not your enemy, Kushina."

A long pause.

"We are fighting the same disaster."

Kushina's eyes narrowed.

"…then why torture Ren?"

For the first time—

one of the masked figures hesitated.

Only for a heartbeat.

But Kushina saw it.

And suddenly—

she wasn't as certain as she'd been when she entered the clearing.
