"Nothing." I let the smile settle on my face as pleasant as I could make it. "I merely understand. And I accept your apology."
He stared at me for a long moment. Then he sat up, taking his arm off the table.
"You do not mean that."
I paused.
"Have you ever meant any of the things you've said to me?" I asked him, letting the sarcasm drip from my tone.
His jaw twitched. The muscle jumped beneath his skin, and I watched the flicker of discomfort pass through his eyes before he smothered it.
My smile lingered.
I sure hoped he knew what I meant, because he had always said one thing, then done another. Why was I even letting him get to me with these stupid words of his?
I rose from my chair.
"In fact, I find this very funny." I let out a breath that was almost a laugh. "Did you really think I would actually forgive you?"
