Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Beginning of Order

The morning air felt unusually still.

At the center of the wide courtyard stood the towering buildings of Astryx Academy—clean, modern, and intimidating in its silence. Rows of students filled the open space, their uniforms crisp, their voices blending into a quiet murmur of anticipation.

A new school year had begun.

For most, this was a moment of excitement. For others, it was the beginning of competition.

Kraine Hiddel stood among the crowd, hands in his pockets, his gaze drifting lazily across the gathering. He wasn't particularly interested in the ceremony. The speeches, the formalities, the expectations—it all felt distant to him.

He didn't stand out.

Not in height, not in posture, not even in presence.

If anything, he seemed like someone who could disappear into the background without anyone noticing.

"…Astryx Academy continues to uphold excellence in both academics and discipline…"

The voice from the stage echoed through the courtyard, but Kraine barely paid attention. His eyes wandered instead—observing students, analyzing movements, catching small details without even trying.

Some were nervous.

Some were confident.

Some were pretending.

He didn't know why he noticed these things. He just did.

"And now," the speaker continued, "we call upon this year's Student Representative."

A subtle shift moved through the crowd.

Whispers rose.

Even Kraine's attention flickered slightly toward the stage.

"The top-ranked student of Astryx Academy…"

A pause.

Then—

"Zenobia Edelweiss."

Applause followed almost instantly.

She stepped forward with composure that felt almost unnatural for a student. Her posture was straight, her movements controlled, her presence commanding without effort. Long, pale hair caught the morning light, and her sharp eyes looked out over the crowd with quiet authority.

Zenobia Edelweiss.

Even without knowing her, anyone could tell—

She was different.

Kraine watched.

Not with admiration, nor interest.

Just observation.

She reached the podium, adjusted the microphone slightly, and began.

"Students of Astryx Academy."

Her voice was clear. Firm. Unshaken.

"This institution stands as one of the highest pillars of academic excellence. To stand here today is not merely a privilege—but a responsibility."

The courtyard fell silent.

No one interrupted. No one whispered.

She had their attention.

"You were not chosen to be here by chance. Each of you carries potential worthy of this academy. But potential alone holds no value without discipline."

Her gaze swept across the crowd.

For a moment—

It paused.

Just slightly.

Then continued.

"This year, you will be tested. Not only by knowledge, but by your resolve. Whether you rise or fall… will depend entirely on your own effort."

Kraine blinked once.

Something about that moment felt… off.

Not her words.

Not her tone.

Something else.

"…Astryx Academy does not create excellence. It reveals it."

She finished.

Applause followed—louder this time, stronger.

Students admired her.

Respected her.

Some even looked at her with quiet awe.

Zenobia Edelweiss stepped back from the podium, her expression unchanged.

Perfect.

Almost too perfect.

Kraine exhaled softly.

"…Hmm."

He didn't clap.

Not because he disagreed.

But because—

He simply didn't feel the need to.

As the ceremony continued, students began shifting, some already talking about rankings, expectations, and the future ahead.

But for a brief moment—

Zenobia's eyes moved again.

This time—

They stopped.

At the back of the crowd.

At him.

Kraine didn't react immediately.

He noticed it a second later.

Their eyes met.

There was no recognition.

No understanding.

Just a silent exchange.

Zenobia's brows narrowed almost imperceptibly.

Not in anger.

But in something closer to irritation.

Everyone else had been listening.

Watching.

Admiring.

But him?

He looked… uninterested.

Calm.

Detached.

As if none of it mattered.

Kraine tilted his head slightly.

"…Did I do something?"

He didn't say it out loud.

But the thought crossed his mind naturally.

Zenobia looked away first.

A small, almost unnoticeable click of her tongue followed as she stepped down from the stage.

The ceremony continued.

But something had already begun.

Not a rivalry.

Not yet.

Just—

Awareness.

And in a place like Astryx Academy—

That alone was enough to change everything.
