After hanging up the phone, Alex Grant glanced in the direction of his sister's hospital room.
He looked down, his long lashes casting shadows. "Sis, I swear I'll work hard on my own so that you and Mom can live a good life, free from any worries."
He had been under his family's protection for too long.
So long that Alex Grant was filled with guilt.
Back in the hospital room, Evelyn Grant was leaning against her pillows, reading through documents from her law firm.
Hearing him come in, she looked up. "Alex, was that your teacher on the phone?"
Usually around this time, her brother would contact the school to get the day's practice assignments.
Alex Grant was a senior in high school. His classes had already covered all the new material, so all that was left were endless rounds of review.
"Oh, yeah. Ms. Miller called to check on me."
"She wants you to go back to school, doesn't she?" Evelyn Grant set down her documents and looked over at him.
