The phone was on speaker, and after a moment, Zane Hawthorne's voice came through, clearly audible to everyone present, including Zoe Rhodes.
"Is there something you need?"
His tone was cold, without a ripple of emotion.
Everyone else was familiar with that tone of voice.
But to Zoe Rhodes, it was unfamiliar.
Holding the phone, she suddenly didn't know what to say.
After a long silence, Zane Hawthorne spoke again. "Give the phone back. You should be in class."
"But your hand..."
"I won't die. I'll take care of it myself."
"..."
"Zoe Rhodes, stop pitying me."
"You're not the only one who's troubled by this relationship anymore."
Before she could react, the call was disconnected.
No one in the President's Office dared to make a sound.
Good heavens. They'd just witnessed the boss and his wife breaking up over the phone. A nervous energy filled the office, but it couldn't stamp out their burning curiosity.
